Southport Tragedy / Subsequent racist attacks
All these riots are becoming extremely concerning. I don't recall it being this bad.

Southport Tragedy / Subsequent racist attacks
I'm pretty sure that's exactly what happened. They clearly wanted it to be an immigrant or a Muslim and are disappointed that it's not.

Southport Tragedy / Subsequent racist attacks
Just horrible. There's no depths the far right won't stoop to.

Huw Edwards named as BBC presenter at centre of scandal
I don't think speculating without having the facts necessarily helps anyone. Unless I'm reading things wrongly, what has come out today seems to be separate to what was reported on last year.

Huw Edwards named as BBC presenter at centre of scandal
No one knew about this at the time.

The Official Labour Calmer Steering Thread (mk III)
That sounds very positive, apart from the cuts.

Vulnerable, messy & bratty: The pop girlies having a moment
Yet it's his most streamed song. I don't think even he would consider that to be one of his favourites. If you use some of his more stripped back stuff, that's a greater representation of his songwriting.

PARIS 2024 | General Discussion & Collation Thread
Interesting approach with the outdoor setting but I'm not sure it's hitting as well. I think these things are actually better visually when it's dark.

The Official Labour Calmer Steering Thread (mk III)
I wish they'd focus more on making sure there's more jobs available over making sure that people are working regardless of their health.

Still No 1? How the music charts lost their lustre
I mean Ed Sheeran did enjoy 19 weeks at #1 with four different songs in 2021 but it's hard to get excited about whoever's going to be #1 because it's always going to be a streaming friendly act. Before streaming, you got a bit more variation. Robbie Williams got a #1 single in 2012, he'd have no chance now (even if he released a banger).

How could the singles chart be improved?
Even in the era of downloads, that wasn't a rule. As far as I'm aware.

How could the singles chart be improved?
I think it needs simplifying. I know why they brought in ACR as otherwise we may see little movement in the chart week by week, but I think it overcomplicated it.

The 100 Most Watched TV Moments in the UK
Yeah, thanks for posting! The Royal Wedding 2011 figure seems to be a cumulative one - the BBC1 coverage did 13.6m.

2024 United States Presidential Election Thread
I haven't following the campaign very much, are they only able to choose between Biden & Trump or can someone else come in?

Who was bigger in the UK at their peak?
I cite these two because they are the two biggest boybands to come out of The X Factor and they were about at around the same time. JLS have had five UK #1 singles, while One Direction had four. JLS had just the one #1 album while One Direction had four. In terms of the impact on pop culture though, I think JLS around about 2009/10 was just as big as 1D. It's interesting how many people seem to associate their earlier songs (Beat Again, Everybody in Love) with their school days, something I haven't really noticed with One Direction (I say this as a massive fan of them). Maybe it was "cooler" to like JLS? I dunno, this came to mind today.

What is the key to surviving a long break between releases?
We know Adele can go 5-6 years between albums and still retain a fanbase, but she's Adele. She's probably not the noisiest when it comes to social media either. It seems to be fairly common to go 2-3 years between albums for a lot of artists, though for some it can be longer. Is it a case of keeping touring in that period? Or does even that not prevent the case of the "difficult second album"?

Strong vocalists let down by their material
I was going to start a new thread but I guess this is a continuation of the original topic - where do you think there have been huge missed opportunities? Just in terms of songs, performance opportunities etc. Apparently Leona Lewis was offered songs (or her record label was) such as Rihanna's "We Found Love" which were turned down, but I don't know how true that is.

There's no way England are getting another one in, surely.

They need to keep the momentum now.
