Take That: Greatest Hits Vol 2
With Odyssey the new versions weren't meant to replace the originals, and most of them were remasters that you may (or may not) notice. I did like the new version of Pray though, and the Never Forget bit at the beginning of Greatest Day.

Spain v England
The disaster bit was an exaggeration but yeah.

Spain v England
Yep. And if we don't win it'd be the most disastrous thing to ever happen, ignoring the fact we got to the final. Whatever you think of England's performance, that doesn't happen by accident.

2024 United States Presidential Election Thread
Scary stuff. I haven't been following US politics much but I can't believe their best choice of president is between two very old men.

Calum Scott - Roots
I don't know how it did in the US but You Are The Reason has accumulated over a million chart sales in the UK despite charting just outside the top 40 (#42). That was his last solo chart hit here though, Biblical didn't make the chart at all (sadly).

What one song would you like to see in the Top 40 right now?
Starlight by Westlife. I wish it did better than it did.

Election 2024
First time they've made the final of the Euros during a Labour leadership ever.

Netherlands v England
It's all over!

Netherlands v England
Very unlucky.

Netherlands v England
I hope that's given them some confidence to hopefully score without needing a penalty.

What examples can you think of for a chart fluke?
Charted in the top 10, but her album only just made it into the top 100.

Spain v France
I genuinely didn't know he was, it was the first time I've noticed him.

The Posters' Chart: 7th July 2024
It would be nice to get a newsflash of "there is no news" though. :D But yes. It's a discipline thing as you don't want to let events in the world to overwhelm you, but you have a choice whether to view it or not.

The Official Labour Calmer Steering Thread (mk III)
Is he ever happy with anything Labour do?

The Official Labour Calmer Steering Thread (mk III)
Yeah, I remain somewhat optimistic. I don't expect them to be perfect, but as long as they aren't playing games with people's lives like their predecessors, it's a win in my book. I know the bar has been lowered quite a bit... I know we can't see changes instantly, much as I wish we could!

Strong vocalists let down by their material
I think they definitely could have found a lane for Matt. They found one for James Arthur who also had the "made the song your own" thing going on with him on X Factor, and that "coolness" about him. You've got people like James Blunt and James Morrison who are probably not a million miles away from Matt (at least in terms of genre). They've got some of that rock thing going on. Rebecca did have some initial success, but I do wonder if they could have done more. Kevin Simm is a trickier one, because I couldn't think of someone to compare him with.

Strong vocalists let down by their material
Yeah, I felt with his first album they were going for something that was a mix of MIKA and Scissor Sisters, and it was completely unsuitable. I know X Factor had the conveyor belt thing going on which wasn't helpful for the acts, although quite a few acts were able to sustain a career so it's doable.

Simon Cowell's interview
I think it's a mix. He's not on social media himself so he's probably not taking in all the comments from 1D fans blaming him for the boys developing an eating disorder or whatever. Broadly it makes sense but I think he didn't put it across in the best way. That said, 1D fans get wound up if he as much as opens his mouth so he might as well just do his own thing.

Strong vocalists let down by their material
Matt Cardle feels like a wasted opportunity. Given how much popularity he endured on X Factor, with the right kind of track he could have really made an impact. At least with Joe McElderry they rectified things somewhat with his second album, playing to his strengths a lot more. One True Voice are an interesting one. Boybands were very much in at that time and the UK didn't really have a band like them.

Strong vocalists let down by their material
James Morrison is one that came to mind. As for Diana Vickers, her initial success fizzled out. Maybe her singing style lost its novelty or something.

What examples can you think of for a chart fluke?
Say Something had already had its chart peak which is probably why. I like Rise Up and I'd have liked it to catch on but it wasn't to be.

What examples can you think of for a chart fluke?
Probably a mix? I think back then this happened by luck - we saw "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls make the top 10 off the back of one cover on X Factor, and "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman did the same off the back of one BGT performance. The 2014 series of X Factor saw "Say Something" being used quite a bit (or so it felt) but it didn't have a direct impact on the charts.
