Oh my I remember 24k Magic kind of ripping off Shakedown - At Night with the synth riff! Still like it though!

Julian rates every Top 40 hit: the 1980s edition
'Club Country' such a unique indie disco song and my favourite of the lot. 'Mama Used To Say' is snappy cool post-disco. 'The Look Of Love' unusual as it uses those retro strings but the bassline and vocal is very up to date for the time.

I thought garage was more 1999-2002 but do as you will!

King Rollo ranks the UK number 1 singles of 1983
A quite depressing song with the lyrical themes, certainly compared to The Police's other hits. It is iconic though.

🔥 Daan's hot hits | EOY 2025 🔥
The Tobiahs song had an emotiveness not in many dance hits these days. With the synths it reminded me of a house version of 4 Strings - Take Me Away.

90s Top 10 sales- Week By Week- 1999
Disco House/French House defintely at its peak at this point but Cassius 1999 isn't one of its best offerings for me (I know it has a lot of fans in dance music though). The Offspring song was everywhere at the time and I liked it, good very catchy upbeat punk, the bit about Ricki Lake was the most memorable line for me!

The BuzzJack Friday Chart Show Thread: 9th January 2026
I might still put Sienna above Skye for the chart career longevity, even though Skye won the BBC Sound of 2026.

Radio 1 Playlist (09/01/26): Internet girl, get up off the treadmill and play the banjo song
Especially when Let You Go ft. Kareen Lomax was easily the better single from his album, I am still sad that wasn't the hit.

King Rollo ranks the UK number 1 singles of 1983
Yep it's very good, atmospheric, reminds me of the best atmospheric 80s ballads The Cars - Drive or Mr Mister - Broken Wings when the synths come in. Very good vocal as you say. The use of bass guitar player Pino Palladino seems to be influenced by Gary Numan's use of him the year before. Billie Jean is catchy and Phil Collins does a good cover of You Can't Hurry Love.

Julian rates every Top 40 hit: the 1980s edition
I considerably prefer Bardo One Step Further to Bucks Fizz Making Your Mind Up. Promised You A Miracle is one of Simple Minds best and indeed it is built around a bouncy riff. Private Eyes another creepy lyrics song like the Police's Every Breath You Take but its not as depressing musically or overplayed on radio as much as the Police song.

Scene ranks the 2007 #1s
Thats a very good song very well produced and sung! @fans for hilson !

King Rollo ranks the UK number 1 singles of 1983
Quite a good #1. Bass guitar was used a lot in the early 80s songs, but specifically I think the first verse is very much influenced by the band Imagination. It's quite slow and I prefer the faster bass and synth songs of the early 80s. The chorus is memorable though and has become iconic!

I preferred Madonna - Give It 2 Me!

King Rollo ranks the UK number 1 singles of 1983
Quite a sad song about depending on alcohol to get through hard times. I still prefer 'One In Ten' though from them.

Top 200 Best selling Singles Of The Noughties
Yep 'Castles in the Sky' and 'Infinity 2008' are the best so far. 'Break Your Heart' is good electropop; listening to it now its quite a bit better than his other massive hit 'Dynamite'. At the time, I wanted Kylie's 'Red Blooded Woman' to be #1 instead of 'Toxic'.

James Marriott Hotel California Rain is good anyway reminds me of Don Broco, don't know why its not doing much on streaming though!

King Rollo ranks the UK number 1 singles of 1983
Not really a fan of 'Uptown Girl', overplay on radio/music channels of both the original and Westlife versions, and Billy Joel has better songs especially 'We Didn't Start The Fire'. Its also very 60's revivalist which I am not really a fan of in the 80's charts, I prefer up to date production from the era. Having said that it didn't keep anything that great off #1 for its five weeks, 'Say Say Say' by Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson wasn't great apart from the bit that was sampled by Hi-Tack in 2006. 'All Night Long' by Lionel Ritchie is a bit better, and I do prefer it to 'Uptown Girl'.
