Julian rates every Top 40 hit: the 1980s edition
Sweet Dreams... is a strong synthpop dancefloor tune like Yazoo Dont Go was. Both seem to anticipate 90s soulful vocal dance music. Toto Africa I used to like but it is overplayed and overrated and I much prefer Hold The Line from them.

The BuzzJack Friday Chart Show Thread: 1st May 2026
@Jade I think the milder and more melodical forms of dubstep have aged better, especially Sub Focus' hits Tidal Wave and Endorphins and Nero's Promises and maybe DJ Fresh Louder too but Guilt goes harder but still has aged well as you say.

Only the Rayo stations? Should have asked Global and Radio 1 that would be incredible.

The Icehouse song has great production, Addison Rae - Fame Is A Gun used similar synth effects recently. I really like the Big Country song as you say the bagpipe-like guitar sounds are unique for the charts of the time - Celtic rock. I think The Darkness were influenced by the overblown guitar in it. Drop The Pilot by Joan Armatrading is great jangle pop nostalgia.

Is it still eligible for NMF considering it wasn't released on a Friday?

Great yes and would there be the early Swedish House Mafia hits without 'I'm Not Alone' refreshing the big room synth sound - maybe not?!

I do like the Nero - Must Be The Feeling style vibes with the drop bassline. 23 seconds longer than James Hype - Be Mine

In one of the only videos of the Jason Nevins track I could find online the sample is unfortunately removed. Still not on Spotify. Its a pity, I think the song would have aged well as a 00s summery house classic.

Jim ranks the 2009 UK #1s
At the time Bonkers really reminded me of Audio Bullys We Don't Care which was in a Lucozade advert prior to the release of Bonkers. Good and iconic track.

Bulletproof is very good, I knew about them and the rest of the 2009 synthpop revival (Little Boots too) because they were covered in a newspaper article I read before it was a hit. Until being revived by Tion Wayne - mmm, hmm!

The UK Top 40 singles of the 1980s: listening sessions + polls: next session 23 August
New Order - Blue Monday Big Country - Fields Of Fire (400 Miles) Joan Armatrading - Drop The Pilot Duran Duran - Is There Something I Should Know? Tracey Ullman - Breakaway --------------------------- Ultravox - Visions In Blue Kissing The Pink - The Last Film In general the 1983 charts have less songs I really love than 1981-1982 I think! Probably because new wave goes more poppy and/or less electronic/dancey. With the exception of Blue Monday of course. I have to go with the most ahead of its time track first even if it is a bit overrated in media. I think The Darkness were influenced by the style of guitar in Big Country! Also in Fields of Fire some guitars that sound like bagpipes - unique. The Joan Armatrading track Drop The Pilot is her best and has a nostalgic jangle pop sound to it. Duran good song but they have better. Tracey Ullman - Breakaway is a fun if a bit cheap 60s cover. I am guessing the popularity of the good and lively Northern Soul sound helped it make the chart. The video has a TikTok style dance to it!

'Dreams' is like an early held back release. Lovely soul pop song. #6 to #2 are all good classics! Pet Shop Boys song at #7 I dont know well but it sounds pretty good.

What Is Love I never used to like due to overplay on radio but I really like it now great synth dance song. I prefer the Do You See The Light Plaything remix from 2002 but the original is a good Donna Summer - I Feel Love tribute in terms of production. I always really liked 'Two Princes' great upbeat indie track. Pity about the dreary #1.
