  1. Record executive Antonio 'L.A.' Reid is confident he can revive the careers of R&B singers Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson because he never stopped believing in their star power.

The Island Def Jam boss was eager to sign both artists to his label - despite the commercial failure of their respective albums released by Virgin Records. After signing Carey in 2002, her subsequent debut with Island, The Emancipation Of Mimi, has gone on to sell more than 10 million copies worldwide - and Reid is convinced Jackson's upcoming album Discipline will have similar success.

He says, "I firmly believe in truly talented people, particularly talented superstars. I believe if you have the talent, it's just a question of someone refining it and helping to make the right creative decisions. Talent always wins in the end; you're never over. As a matter of fact, I find that the marketplace generally is much healthier for icons than it might be for new artists, and I think that has been proven for many artists. When you look at the Eagles' success or the recent Led Zeppelin success, it tells me that people who grew up on these artists always love them, they just want them to make the right record. So I never really give up on them."

Interesting interview with a record executive.

  2. Neither can I. :naughty:

Mariah's first single, now cited as "Touch My Body", previously scheduled for radio adds on January 29th, has been pushed back by two weeks.

According to the newly-updated New Releases list from All Access, the song will now impact Top 40/Mainstream and Top 40/Rhythmic-Crossover radio stations on February 12, 2008.

"Touch My Body" was first revealed on MariahDailyJournal as a new title from Mariah's upcoming album. It was later confirmed that in a Universal Music office meeting, L.A. Reid had asked staff members to vote for their favorite song between his first single choice - "That Chick" and "Touch My Body". Apparently, "Touch My Body" was Mariah's choice for the first single.

Although All Access gets its data directly from the record labels, please consider the date and title tentative until an official announcement is made.

    12th February article.

It seems like Mariah fans are not the only ones eagerly anticipating her new single. On Monday, the California-based radio station KHOP promoted the single's premiere two weeks too soon.

Today, the DJs at 104.7 KISS FM in Phoenix, Arizona played what they thought was an exclusive premiere of "Touch My Body". What they didn't know was that they were playing "Secret Love", Mariah's 2005 Japan-only bonus track on The Emancipation of Mimi. Click below to play the clip of the false announcement.

DJs at the popular radio station B96 in Chicago have asked listeners not to call and ask for Mariah's new song because they haven't received it yet. They assured fans that they will play the song as soon as they get it.

Mariah's first single, reportedly titled "Touch My Body", is currently scheduled to impact radio stations nationwide on February 12.

Embarrassment for the radio station. :P

    • The new Mariah Carey single is titled "Touch My Body," HITS snoop Jeff McCartney¹ has learned. "It's classic midtempo Mariah with a BIG hook," says the Jeffster. The track, written by The-Dream and produced by Jermaine Dupri, will be delivered to Top 40, Rhythm and Urban next Tuesday at precisely 6:30 pm EST and will officially go for adds 2/11-12.

    • Friday Morning Quarterback (FMQB) now lists "Touch My Body" as impacting Mainstream radio on Monday, February 11, 2008.

¹Jeff McCartney is the Program Director of KZHT 97.1 FM in Salt Lake City, Utah

    Another update.

All Access has again updated its News Releases list with a new radio impact date for Mariah's new single, "Touch My Body." The song is now being reported as going for adds at Top 40/Mainstream and Top 40/Rhythmic-Crossover formats on February 19.

Mariah's single first appeared on the list with a release date of January 22 on January 11th, updated to January 29 days later, changed to February 12 yesterday, and pushed back, yet again, to February 19 today!

Fans anxiously await an official announcement from Mariah's label which hopefully will be coming soon!

Meanwhile, we just discovered an old entry made by PD Erik Bradley on his B96 blog. On August 23, 2007, he wrote: MC is BACK...almost! : "It's only a few short days away...get ready for new music from Mariah Carey! She's saying her new single "Cruise Control" is her best uptempo since "Fantasy" (and we LOVED that one!) I CAN NOT WAIT!" As we all know, things have changed since then!

Final announcement on this from the source below as of today.

The penthouse suites and room temperature-attendants demanded by pop divas are no longer a formula for success in an industry hit by downloading.

After a series of flopped albums and cancelled record deals, star singers are in the process of being "rebranded" by an American record mogul who says they have to wake up to the new harsh realities.

Antonio "L. A." Reid, boss of Island Def Jam, said: "We have to operate as if we're spending money from our own bank accounts instead of operating like there is some endless well."

Ominously for the divas, Reid told Music Week: "It's good business to know that for every dime we spend, we are looking for a return."

The Grammy Award winner's warning follows upheaval at EMI, where Guy Hands, the financier who bought the company for £3.2 billion, told stars that the days of multimillion-pound advances were over.

Robbie Williams promptly went "on strike", Radiohead walked out and the Rolling Stones took their latest album to Universal Music, parent company of Island Def Jam. EMI executives shudder at the mention of Mariah Carey, who was given an $82 million (£41.9 million) deal in 2001 but was rapidly paid off with $28 million.

Carey, 37, who has sold 150 million records, will soon release a "sexed-up" single called "Touch My Body." But the star, who once rolled up in Shanghai with four cars full of luggage, including 350 pairs of shoes, may not have grasped the bean counters' message. Last month she summoned Q magazine to the bedroom of her $3,000-a-night hotel suite overlooking Manhattan and said: "I've never done one divaish thing in my life."

Janet Jackson, 41, famed for her lavish videos and high-tempo dance routines, never recovered from her "wardrobe malfunction" at the Super Bowl in 2004. She quit EMI in 2006 after her album Y.O. sold only 12,000 copies in Britain. Appropriately, after shedding the 60lb she gained for a film role, Jackson's comeback album is called Discipline.

If the day of the diva is over, it does not bode well for Jennifer Lopez. The singer's notorious demands have required rooms to be redecorated at a moment's notice. Brave, her latest album, was her lowest seller despite substantial investment by SonyBMG.

Reid says that he can put Carey and Jackson back at the top as "talent always wins in the end". The Emancipation of Mimi, Carey's successful album for Universal from 2005, helped to reestablish her with fans.

Reid told Music Week: "Mariah's a true songwriter.

With Janet, we spend more time with the producers and writers finding ideas that appeal to her and that she can get into. Whatever it takes, I'll do it."

Thought this might be of interest based on the reports of Mariah's alleged diva behaviour. ;)

It is that project that I have given myself Ykcin. :yahoo: I started it the other night when I was grouping the ones that were to be visited together. 37 churches in one day is a bit much, so I divided them into groups. Might go visiting a few tomorrow, depends on the weather. :cheer:
