  1. None of the new adds blowing my head off by the way. Nice to see Demi back but it's more of a meh rewrite of Physical by Dua Lipa than Cool For The Summer II. Where is My Husband! has fun old-skool Beyonce/Amerie vibes but might take a few more listens. I do approved of exclamation marks in song titles though.
  2. If/when Calvin stops getting such big hits, he'll lose support. No sign of this happening so far though, he seems to follow up every relative flop with a smash. And his image is completely different to Robbie's in 2012. Plus Radio 1 were really pushing the ageism thing then. They welcome us over-30s now even if they're not actively targeting us, back then Ben Cooper was celebrating "scaring off the over-30s", even though he was well over 30 himself, the bloody hypocrite. He literally said he'd "probably always" listen to it himself because he always wanted to hear the next big thing! It's all ridiculous anyway, you've got young kids streaming Fleetwood Mac, plus people in their forties are heavily into lots of R1 playlist stuff, often because it doesn't sound much different to what they grew up with anyway - and lots of it is on Radio 2 as well. Some things sound like music from BEFORE I was born, including several tracks on the current playlist we're talking about right now! Radio 1 shouldn't be a "youth" station, it should be a "youthful" one. Some people feel and act young at 60, and some 25-year-olds might as well be drawing their pensions. It should just concentrate on being a "new music" station, and that will naturally attract young listeners anyway. If Capital want more listeners, they can fight for them via great unmissable content. Why should the BBC hand them over on a plate? I bet it has more listeners over 30 than under 30. They also have a 65-year-old DJ. Obviously some new music isn't suitable for the station but you can just use your common sense to decide what sounds old and tired and what doesn't, and what will actually sound good and powerful on high-energy daytime radio. I'm 42 and I do dip into Radio 2 as well but then sometimes something new but pointless like Chrissie Hynde and K.D. Lang covering Me & Mrs Jones will come on like it did when I listened this week and I'll think "oh FFS do we HAVE to, I'm not 8768716 years old!". Radio 1 really should have definitely playlisted Candy though. It was ironically debuted on there, was #1 for two weeks and they'd have been all over it if it'd been exactly the same but by Olly Murs!

I forgot about Texas Hold'Em because I didn't really like it so didn't add it to my relevant pop/radio hits playlist and haven't heard it much as a recurrent on BBC Radio 1 so forgot it existed and now I feel silly.

I am certainly not the world's biggest Ed Sheeran fan and spent the first ten years of his career moaning on and on and about about his omnipresence at the time. Though my thoughts kind of softened four years ago with Bad Habits and Shivers, which I actually streamed quite a bit. However I do have to say Don't Look Down is the best thing he has ever done - even if it is more than slightly indebted to Apricots by Bicep according to my ears!

  14. Trustfall wasn't playlisted but was played to death so much everywhere else they might as well have gone for it. See also: I Don't Wanna Wait!
  15. Yeah, it just gets annoying when you want to hear all the new music in the same place. But they can't play EVERY heritage artist I guess. The charter is stupid though, it's not just under-30s that like the idea of a new music station that plays a bit of everything, and you're not getting THAT from Capital*. I'm 42 and I'll be listening to Radio 1 for the rest of my life as much as I dip into Radio 2 when I fancy a bit of Tears For Fears. *It's ironic that the commercial sector really have it in for Radio 1 but don't do a thing to replicate it. I mean, nobody is stopping anyone from playing K Pop Demon Hunters next to Bon Iver, are they? This is why I want to set up my own station, Radio A, which would blatantly rip Radio 1 off like hell but also give you loads of new Kylie and Pet Shop Boys. A man can dream!
  16. They often go for different songs to Radio 1/2. I like to see it as the modern equivalent of a double A-side!
  17. Great stuff, I've been trying to update my Spotify version of the R1 Playlist by just looking at the last.fm stats and guessing. Feels like not being told what the chart is, reminded me of how important it is to me! Gonna use yours, can't be far off! Is very close to what I came up with earlier. Here's my version based on your findings and of course my Radio 2/6 Tracks of the Week.
  18. FFS TELL US, BBC! SOME OF US SEE THE RADIO 1 PLAYLIST AS A MORE CREDIBLE AND REFLECTIVE VERSION OF THE CHART THAT LETS YOU KNOW WHAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT! Radio 2 have got theirs up! Ah, I get it. They've added Marti Pellow and are scared to break it to us, that'll be it. Lots of has-be...I mean "revered veterans" on 2 this week. Before I even press play, I can imagine EXACTLY what Dancing With The Europeans sounds like. Thinking Trash if you ordered it from Temu?*. What do people get out of listening to "heritage acts" writing such poor retreads of their classic vintage moments? This isn't good. *Well I wasn't wrong. Back on topic and R1 does need a bit of clearout. Feel like I need a huge break from almost everything on the A-list plus much of the B-list.

  20. My son has watched KPop Demon Hunters about nine times in four days. If I included all the times I'd heard Golden from his tablet this week it would have been straight in at #1!

  23. Yeah, trying to stick to one per artist but very open to suggestions. Go ahead and add, especially if you can think of more things by big acts that didn't make the Top 40 in the days when it was relatively easy to. Just realised it needs some pre-Born Slippy Underworld! If anyone wants to add them in at the bottom, I'm sure I'll find a suitable place to slice them in!
  24. Okay, using my very random brain, I've quickly put all the suggestions into what could be a coherent order, but I'll have to go through it properly to make sure. Went for 1 track per artist. I definitely don't think this was a waste of time in any way, I've come out with exactly what I wanted. Transmission into Bizarre Love Triangle is a great one-two punch opener if I do say so myself. No they're not the same band. And BLT into Like a Motorway sounded fantastic. Let's Go To Bed - The Drowners - Stairway To Heaven - Piano Man has been a fabulous run too. Great to hear Straight Outta Compton again too. Word to the motherf**ker! Went into Mama Said Knock You Out* flawlessly. Okay, got to 84 using some of Dermot O'L's choices from the Radio 2 show, can we credibly get it to 100 without resorting to DJ Supermarket and MC Catflap who got to #98 in July 1990 with Pot Noodle Time (In The House), which I completely just made up off the top of my head? Might add My Book by The Beautiful South, best commercial suicide follow-up to A Little Time they could have possibly come up with. *Jaz13Music is a legend for suggesting this. When I was compiling my 90s playlists it was all about the biggest chart and radio hits so I missed it but I forgot how banging it is, great to hear it again. Not overwhelmed with the 'this is subjective, what's the point' comments but I've road-tested the first half of it and it's mint so thanks so much to the people that did co-operate. Also, there are much worse ways you could spend a Sunday afternoon if you're at a loose end today, so sit back, press play and let the prestigious flops wash all over you. It's reconnected me with a load of bangers I haven't heard for ages, like W.F.L., which sounds brilliant! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2hl27S0jL3ftrG1RUmjgNe?si=17165a84a20a4354&pt=0a0fb8abb92ea99d99d374e316e9b75a
  25. It does tend to be a ten-year limit unless they're really big.
