Radio 1 Playlist (06/06/25): My bodyguard is a zombie with a sapphire gun
Yeah, they've only played it nine times in three days. Let's close them down immediately and send them straight to jail! There really is no need to be so extra about such trivial things. For all intents and purposes, it's on the playlist, have a Lemsip or something and stop being so dramatic.

Radio 1 Playlist (06/06/25): My bodyguard is a zombie with a sapphire gun
I've not been listening much either as I have been having 'fake Radio 1 sessions' on Spotify built around their playlist and my own recent recurrent choices as it's not just been the same for me content-wise since Mills left even if M+M are a huge improvement on Dean and Vicky who were just two years of nothingness (I am 42 though tbf) but I did listen to Mollie's first show back and there was a ridiculous number of pre-2020 songs for 2025. I've gone back into the official BBC Sounds tracklist but it's definitely missing some so I can't prove my point, there were definitely around 10 pre-2020 and even-pre 2016 songs including ones by people who weren't even playing the Big Weekend like Taylor Swift, Hozier and Bastille!

Post-Sheeran Male Solo Acoustic Guys: The Comprehensive List
It can feel like there are one or two "here today, gone tomorrow" underdressed, "authentic" and rather Ordinary acoustic guitar-wielding, streaming-dominating blokes every year or who are quickly replaced after twelve months with their successors, so I thought I'd compile this list of almost-identical Sheeranseque guys that have been big for a while over the past 14 years or so before everybody moved onto the next Tattooed Tom, admittedly including some who are hot right now but unlikely to be dominating the chart scene in three years, nevermind ten. I accept a few do stick around for a bit longer, like the guy who wants a party on the day that he dies. Also Hozier, who made a dramatic return to the chart scene etc. Here we go! Have I missed any? Alex Warren Benson Boone Calum Scott Cian Ducrot Dermot Kennedy George Ezra Hozier Jamie Lawson James Arthur James Bay JP Cooper Lewis Capaldi Myles Smith Michael Marcagi Noah Kahan Passenger Rag’n’Bone Man Tom Grennan Tom Odell Tom Walker

Friday Chart Predictions
If the charts worked like they used to, Wolf Alice would have had tonnes of Top 40 hits by now. I admit that there were incentives for getting indie bands in the charts in the past, like b-sides etc. But it seems mad that guitar bands apart from The 1975 and Bring Me The Horizon etc are nowhere to be seen, and even then they only usually get a week.

Radio 1 Playlist (06/06/25): My bodyguard is a zombie with a sapphire gun
I have also noticed that R1 seemed to have dropped the 'excessive number of recurrents from about 10-15 years ago' thing, thank God. I love a lot of those songs but it's meant to be a new/contemporary music station so I am very glad about that. I'm guessing it was linked to the Big Weekend and probably getting the listeners in a nostalgic R1 Anthems mood for Sugababes/Natasha Bedingfield but it was weird they didn't say why they were doing it when it wasn't by someone who wasn't even playing the Big Weekend. If they're gonna play things like California Gurls in 2025, it at least needs to be for a reason, they're not Radio 2 or Heart!

Friday Chart Predictions
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE* let Sabby C end this absolute reign of meh. I didn't mind Ordinary for a Tattooed Tom** song at first, now I'm on the verge of completely despising it. No way is he allowed to break Bryan's record, my childhood would be ruined. It's not even from a film! We really need a more aggressive form of ACR, there are tonnes of other airplay hits out there and it would be good to see more of them in the chart. I think after a certain number of weeks a song has proved its point and popularity, it certainly didn't count towards the chart when I was spinning my 12" of fecking Get Ready For This by 2 Unlimited 18 months after it came out. However, as I appreciate streaming is the way people consume music these days, I'd say apply ACR after ten weeks regardless of what's happening, and cut the value by 75%. What is the point of tedious slow-as-a-tortoise charts? Hardly anyone is following them these days and most people that do just get frustrated with the stagnation. This will make it easier for locked-out acts to get in and therefore draw more attention to those songs and add to their popularity, whilst maybe even attracting people back to the chart again. *Excuse the pun **A name my friend made up for bland post-Sheeran angsty male solo acoustic guitar guys who are big for about a year only to be replaced with very similar individuals 12 months later

No 'fingers crossed' about it.

Radio 1 Playlist (06/06/25): My bodyguard is a zombie with a sapphire gun
It's not the end of the world, it'll be there on Friday and they're playing it anyway. There are much more important things in the world to fret about. Chill!

Radio 1 Playlist (06/06/25): My bodyguard is a zombie with a sapphire gun
Straight to A-list next Friday, I'll put £56 million on it.

Radio 1 Playlist (06/06/25): My bodyguard is a zombie with a sapphire gun
Strongly feel like Wet Leg are about to do a right Emeli Sandé, the two singles have been meh at best. Otherwise good to see Calvin on the A-list where he should have been anyway, also looking forward to hearing Addison, Tate and Sammy Virji & Skepta on the radio, otherwise another pretty meh week, and the last single from Cowboy Carter was about a year ago so that's strange. I've always wanted to like Yungblud more than I actually do, though will always have a soft spot for Cotton Candy and Tissues. Sadly, this one isn't doing a lot for me. And I live in Doncaster! We're definitely well past peak Sheeran aren't we? It will be interesting to see how this one does. Old Phone flopped hard by his standards, and that was definitely a real single no matter what anybody says as I heard it on Radios 1 and 2 approximately seven million times - that definitely meets the criteria for a proper single in 2025. Not a fan but good luck to him! Anyway, nobody stays that popular forever, and he'll be filling out stadiums for the rest of his life.

When did you start paying attention to the UK charts?
About 1989 aged six because I'm old.
-
What is the most Ordinary #1 ever?
Yeah I probably have missed the point tbh, wouldn't be the first time!
-
What is the most Ordinary #1 ever?
As much as I like it, Flat Beat by Mr Oizo didn't sound anything like a #1 back in 1999! Obviously propelled there by Levi's jeans and a cute yellow puppet.

Radio 1 Playlist (02/05/25): Two Eds are better than one
Yeah, 2 weeks always seems a bit harsh. Was it something he said? Gotta admit I've not been listening to much R1 recently, I still hear everything on the playlist cos I Spotify it but am I missing much content-wise? I used to be glued to it but that seemed to stop when Scott left. Also Matt and Jerry have sounded fun together when I have tuned in but kind of want Mollie back so I hope that's not far off. And I'm never up early enough for Greg because rubbish things going on in my life that mean I'm not much of a morning person right now. Only new addition I'm massively excited about this week is MOLIY but haven't the rest much yet. Good to see The Wombats still on and that's two consecutive Ed Sheeran songs I don't mind, which must be some sort of record for me*. Surprised Lola and Ely are gone already! Actually no Bad Habits and Shivers were fine compared to most of the 2010s ones, which kind of tortured me. Do we think there'll be another Big Weekend overhaul in a few weeks with R1 Anthems stars Sugababes and Natasha Bedingfield making a surprise return to the playlist?

Big Songs That Were Ineligible For The Charts
Yeah, I remember Radio 1 loving this then wondering why it never charted! Good thread on this stuff here.

Big Songs That Were Ineligible For The Charts
Yeah only just noticed Jóga didn't chart after seeing it on a Top of the Pops repeat, turns out it was ineligible as it was only released as a "as a three-CD and VHS box set"! Is one of her best songs too.

Big Songs That Were Ineligible For The Charts
She's Electric gets on Radio 2 so much you'd think it'd been a real single at the time. Another one: Mardy Bum by Arctic Monkeys - gets on Radio 1 as a throwback a lot so guessing that was some sort of airplay-only single, I was having a bit of a break from the radio around then so not sure.

Friday Chart Predictions
Don't think I'll ever get it, especially in a cost of living crisis. Imagine all the other things you can do with £14! The only physical music I've been buying over recent years has been the Now Yearbooks and even then I've just been playing them once then leaving them on the shelf. I seem to have completely forgotten what the point in physical music is, just got too used to streaming. I imagine a fair few of these re-issues have been sold on for a profit pretty quickly.

Friday Chart Predictions
Yes I was. Turns out it's "only" £13.99 (plus P+P). What a bargain. I remember when 7" singles were looked down on so much they were 99p if they even bothered making them at all. Noel's bank account must be bursting at the seams right now. I don't really see the point in physical music anymore as do pretty much all my listening via my phone but each to their own.
