HiyaLuv!

Strongly feel like Wet Leg are about to do a right Emeli Sandé, the two singles have been meh at best. Otherwise good to see Calvin on the A-list where he should have been anyway, also looking forward to hearing Addison, Tate and Sammy Virji & Skepta on the radio, otherwise another pretty meh week, and the last single from Cowboy Carter was about a year ago so that's strange. I've always wanted to like Yungblud more than I actually do, though will always have a soft spot for Cotton Candy and Tissues. Sadly, this one isn't doing a lot for me. And I live in Doncaster! We're definitely well past peak Sheeran aren't we? It will be interesting to see how this one does. Old Phone flopped hard by his standards, and that was definitely a real single no matter what anybody says as I heard it on Radios 1 and 2 approximately seven million times - that definitely meets the criteria for a proper single in 2025. Not a fan but good luck to him! Anyway, nobody stays that popular forever, and he'll be filling out stadiums for the rest of his life.

About 1989 aged six because I'm old.

Yeah I probably have missed the point tbh, wouldn't be the first time!

As much as I like it, Flat Beat by Mr Oizo didn't sound anything like a #1 back in 1999! Obviously propelled there by Levi's jeans and a cute yellow puppet.

Yeah, 2 weeks always seems a bit harsh. Was it something he said? Gotta admit I've not been listening to much R1 recently, I still hear everything on the playlist cos I Spotify it but am I missing much content-wise? I used to be glued to it but that seemed to stop when Scott left. Also Matt and Jerry have sounded fun together when I have tuned in but kind of want Mollie back so I hope that's not far off. And I'm never up early enough for Greg because rubbish things going on in my life that mean I'm not much of a morning person right now. Only new addition I'm massively excited about this week is MOLIY but haven't the rest much yet. Good to see The Wombats still on and that's two consecutive Ed Sheeran songs I don't mind, which must be some sort of record for me*. Surprised Lola and Ely are gone already! Actually no Bad Habits and Shivers were fine compared to most of the 2010s ones, which kind of tortured me. Do we think there'll be another Big Weekend overhaul in a few weeks with R1 Anthems stars Sugababes and Natasha Bedingfield making a surprise return to the playlist?

Yeah, I remember Radio 1 loving this then wondering why it never charted! Good thread on this stuff here.

Yeah only just noticed Jóga didn't chart after seeing it on a Top of the Pops repeat, turns out it was ineligible as it was only released as a "as a three-CD and VHS box set"! Is one of her best songs too.

She's Electric gets on Radio 2 so much you'd think it'd been a real single at the time. Another one: Mardy Bum by Arctic Monkeys - gets on Radio 1 as a throwback a lot so guessing that was some sort of airplay-only single, I was having a bit of a break from the radio around then so not sure.

Don't think I'll ever get it, especially in a cost of living crisis. Imagine all the other things you can do with £14! The only physical music I've been buying over recent years has been the Now Yearbooks and even then I've just been playing them once then leaving them on the shelf. I seem to have completely forgotten what the point in physical music is, just got too used to streaming. I imagine a fair few of these re-issues have been sold on for a profit pretty quickly.

Yes I was. Turns out it's "only" £13.99 (plus P+P). What a bargain. I remember when 7" singles were looked down on so much they were 99p if they even bothered making them at all. Noel's bank account must be bursting at the seams right now. I don't really see the point in physical music anymore as do pretty much all my listening via my phone but each to their own.

Sonnet by The Verve just came into my head and it got me thinking, can you recall any others that got loads of radio play but weren't recognised as official singles for whatever reason? In this case it couldn't chart because it was released as part of a box set of 12" singles. I have also got: Don't Panic/God Put A Smile Upon Your Face/The Hardest Part by Coldplay and Idioteque by Radiohead, the latter of which didn't come out in any physical form as a single? There must be a few more. Obviously it wouldn't even matter now as most things don't even have a physical release. Go!

Yeah, I know sometimes Capital playlist 'buzz' singles for a couple of weeks but otherwise, if it's on the Radio 1/2/6/X playlists I'm treating it as a single regardless of whether I actually listen to the station or not! It's a far cry from going to buy them at Woolies for £1.99 and looking forward to the b-sides etc. Have just come to the conclusion that substantial airplay = single, whichever station is doing it!

Have they binned off Lizzo? Still Bad was sounding good on Radio 2! Doesn't matter much to me anyway now, I like making my Fake Nows full of big radio hits but a song can feel like a hit regardless of which station I hear it on now I've massively upped my R2 listenership. Still feels unfair that certain songs that would be fine on R1 get snubbed because of factors like age, the record label they're released on and so on but what can you do.

I have listened to lots of Radio 2 in the car this week as went to my 50-year-old mate's who stopped listening to Radio 1 in about 2014. Little Bit Closer sounded great and Spike Island growing on me, definitely in no rush to hear the new Gary Barlow and Beverley Knight* ones again though. It's good that at least most R1 pop gets on R2 too so we at least get some current relevant stuff during these road trips. *They are obsessed with her I heard it on Radio 2 first! Admittedly on Jo Whiley, don't think the drug reference made the cut though. Does sound great in the sun - not massively into his new album as it gets a bit midtempo, bland and samey but that's another great single from him. I don't disagree with everything he's done this era. B-side now on streaming Tyrants is better than half the album!

How much does this latest Oasis re-issue cost? £36 million? Fun when this stuff happens but guessing low 30s by Friday if in the Top 40 at all. But could be proved wrong and in need of some educa-shee-en in the raaaaaaain.

Itty Bitty is just Guess if you ordered it from Wish. I liked her earlier stuff. Watch this grow on me massively regardless.

I'll treat Up From The Bottom as a real single then! Is so hard to tell these days, especially when bands fall down a hole between being too old for R1 and too loud for R2. But looks like a lot of those do end up on X. Not a station for me, I'm afraid but good to know these things are getting airplay somewhere. Is nobody playing The Hives? Enough Is Enough is a banger!

See this as a sister thread to 'UK #1 Singles Missing from Streaming Platforms'. There's not that much left to be honest thanks to the great work of people like Pop Music Activism etc, but there are still various things I wish I could stream but can't, not just #1's but tracks like Lucid's I Can't Help Myself, Bizarre Inc's I'm Gonna Get You and Wind It Up by the Prodigy, which disappeared completely a while ago, presumably due to a sample. I would also like to see the remaining Manics b-sides added and I heard some Beautiful South b-sides are great but it just seems to be their albums and compilations on there. Also Muse did a great cover of Popcorn you can't get on Spotify. Also missing Love Rollercoaster by Red Hot Chili Peppers and ironically the UK single mix of Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey) by De La Soul, ironic because that WAS on there before they added the rest of their early stuff following various legal battles. All the other versions of that are sh!t and wrong. Guessing we'll never have the right version of Toca's Miracle by Fragma (yes i know it got to #1) or 2 People by Jean Jacques Smoothie for contractual reasons. Also the single edit of Playing With Knives wouldn't go amiss, absolutely euphoric but don't need seven minutes of it every time - see also various Underworld singles. And where's Fat Neck by Black Grape in its original form? Plus the Fluke Minimix of Spooky by New Order - the original version is incorrectly tagged as this but it's just the one from the album. Would also like Blur's 2010 one-off limited edition single Fool's Day. Gotta say my 'Not On Spotify' playlist is tiny now compared to what it was like 5-10 years ago, so that's good. So, is there anything left you're dying to stream legally but are still unable to?

New add thoughts: * Lorde - What Was That [B]: Strong comeback, much more Green Light than Solar Power * Addison Rae - Headphones On [C]: Didn't seem like anything special the first couple of times I heard it but we'll see, was no Diet P * AJ Tracey feat. Headie One & Aitch - Friday Prayer [C]: More landfill rap * Ashnikko - Itty Bitty [C]: Feels like a total Poundland Brat cash-in although liked her earlier stuff, may grow on me * James Hype - Don't Wake Me Up [C]: Think I've heard this a couple of times, sounded like the formulaic meh in-one-ear-out-the-other AI Heart dance I'm totally sick of * Morgan Seatree feat. Florence + The Machine - Say My Name [Remix]: I don't know what the point of this is * Mumford & Sons - Caroline [C]: This is the most Radio 2 song Radio 1 have playlisted in the past ten years, anyone would think they were playing the Big Weekend or something so it had to go on. Makes Morgan Wallen sound like Central Cee. So not a great week but still loads of things that have been around a while I'm digging!
