It's a well-deserved chart-topper for Giggs, with Radio 1's Dev and Alice having a lorra, lorra fun with that song on the afternoons at the moment. Sam Fender fails to bag a second #1 though all hope is far from lost, with TDCD's characteristically fun Talk looking very eligible to snap up the top prize in future weeks. Elsewhere, there are 24-place jumps for Friendly Fires and MEDUZA (another potential future chart-topper - great to see that gaining momentum in the real chart after years of tropical/future bass tedium), with Foals' very danceable In Degrees enjoying a 40-20 leap. PRIMADONNA soundalike So Am I gives Ava Max her second fakechart appearance, with Billie Eilish (expect big things for Bad Guy in coming weeks), Circa Waves and Vampire Weekend also doubling their chart tallies and Panic! at the Disco finally opening their fakechart account. I'm with you every step of the way. Steve Mac needs to do one. Author of some of the most abysmal pop songs of recent years. He might have started his career with (I Want To GIve You Devotion) but it seems there has been one hell of a decline in quality since. He co-penned Bedroom Floor, one of the most laughably horrid songs of the current era. He's the king of Aldi pop cheese.

Everything about this smacks of desperation. Marshmello is the king of tacky non-banging midtempo Spotify 'future bounce' dance-pop. Fair play to CHVRCHES for scoring another Top 40 hit but they are better than this. He is like the Poundland of electronic music in the same way that Post Malone is the 99p cheeseburger of hip-hop.

Can't wait for this, love everything he's put out over recent years with the obvious exception of lazy afro bashment-esque Spotify-friendly fodder Ring Ring. Instruction was an instant classic, should have been #1!

Talk is a banger, can't wait for it to hit radio. Is it just me or are Radio 1 indie bands having longer careers than they did in the past? This lot have ten years behind them, Foals have well over a decade etc. The likes of Cast got about three or four years of relevance back in the day. Well-deserved though. Long may they continue, they are the joint kings of the indie-dance banger along with the resurgent Friendly Fires. There was a massive (almost overnight) indie sea change in 2008 when landfill ladrock was replaced by music from bands that were far more charismatic, intelligent, playful, dancefloor-friendly and willing to venture out of their comfort zone and acts like TDCC, Foals, MGMT, Bombay Bicycle Club and Everything Everything were at the forefront of that movement. That Britpop II thing (think Kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight, Scouting For Girls, The Fratellis etc etc) really wasn't good, was it?

I'm afraid Orange Tree sounds like a Mabel z-side and a cynical attempt at a trend-chasing Spotify hit a la CHVRCHES recent non-masterpiece with lord of late 2010s tackiness Marshmello. Won't do anything so pointless. I miss the fun and eccentricity of songs like Mowgli's Road, Oh No and #200 smash Power and Control. Having said that, I've only heard it once yet it's kind of lodged in my head. This era seems very, very bland and beige so far though.

Jessie Ware retains the top spot for another week, with just one stream seperating Adore You from chart runner-up BABY. Wiley and pals enjoy a huge 37-place leap into the Top 3, with Sam Fender's Hypersonic Missiles shooting up a further 12 places as it continues its potential rise to the chart summit. Last weeks #2 is this week's #9 as Foals' other former silver medalist Exits finally, erm, exits the Top 40, only for the long-running Oxford combo to instantly replace it with new album cut In Degrees, which would appear to be the next official single. There's a 23-place jump for the banging Sirens from Icarus, with Krystal Klear's Euphoric Dreams also pounding furiously on the top ten door. Sundara Karma's surprisingly infectious Higher States is the highest new entry, despite most of the R1-backed Reading band's previous singles having gone in one ear and straight out the other, and Robyn scores a #23 entry thanks to the Metronomy-produced Ever Again. Fisher's Ya Kidding makes a strong start at #30, and Two Door Cinema Club's very welcome comeback single Talk sneaks in at #35 after just four days of streams. Meduza's atmospheric and somewhat nostalgic club stormer Piece of Your Heart also creeps into the lower echelons of the Top 40, whilst Friendly Fires' new cover of cult house classic Lack of Love is straight in at #38 with a view to rising much higher over coming weeks. A new chart rule I just invented means Giant actually goes up the charts in spite of all other nine-weekers slipping out of the fake hit parade. To attempt to mirror the pace and general behaviour of the classic old-school pre-streaming/download/six-weeks-of-pre-release-hype-and-a-first-week-discount charts, I analysed one from this week 30 years ago and noticed that only a couple of (massively popular) records remained on the Top 40 for more than around eight weeks, even though most songs rose to their peaks rather than entering at them. I therefore decided to go a little further and allow a maximum of just one 9+ week hit per chart week, and I'm still not bored of Calvin and R'nB Man's uplifting perfectly-titled brass-laden thumper. Therefore, Giant is now my sole survivor from my first ever chart, with six of the seven departees disappearing after week eight. They've made their point now. Call it my answer to ACR. It probably has to go soon, though. It's epic rise and fall city as a load of songs are impacted by the unique way my chart is compiled (the last 30 days of stats). Jessie Ware scores a much-deserved chart-topper (wish Radio 1 would get behind that even though its not tied to an album currently), Foals' On the Luna sensationally nabs the silver medal from January's Exits with the latter plummeting down 16 places and another track R1 should play in the daytime, the CLiQ remix of Karma (I listened to the original, it was kind of typically plodding late 10s pop) continues its ascent. Maybe all boring down-to-midtempo Spotify-friendly pop songs need a CLiQ remix. Giggs crashes in at a surprisingly lofty #4 (got kind of addicted to it over the past week), and the Top 10 new entries don't stop there, with Cardi and Bruno's slowburning sleazefest Please Me finally gaining the acknowledgement it deserves. There's a huge climb for The 1975's impassioned anti-Trump stormer Love It If We Made It, and the gorgeously classy Comme Si also enjoys a stratospheric rise. Elsewhere, there are a couple of songs I'm not sure are officially singles or ever will be. Annie Mac played BMTH's throbbing Heavy Metal the other week so I assumed it was going to be a single, and Chaka Khan finally cracks the chart sounding as fresh and relevant as ever after two funk-orientated singles that didn't do that much for me. Play God's loss is Hypersonic Missiles' gain as attentions turn to the brand new brassy Boss-tinged single from North Shields' finest, and I also finally admit the initially drab 365 is a bit of a toe-tapper by giving it Top 20 status. Another melodic dance pounder Radio 1 should be getting behind on daytime is Sirens from frequent banger sources Icarus, and The Prodigy replace recent 1992-esque stormer Timebomb Zone with the now-haunting We Live Forever, which I think was meant to be their new single. There's a shocking 4-OUT drop for the Pet Shop Boys' On Social Media, whose performance was being propped up by several week #1 streams before the novelty wore off, with Theophilus London feat. Tame Impala instantly replacing the incredibly catchy Only You with the infectious Whiplash.
