No matter what they do, if they do it, it surely won't possibly be any worse than those 2016 Stone Roses singles. That is the bar to beat. In fact every recording artist should just apply that standard before they get into the studio and at least they'll know they've come out with something of value even if it's only marginally better.

I think Radio 2 could do more to help the veteran bands when it comes to new stuff. They'll A-list a new song by an old band for weeks then never play it again so it never really gets into the popular consciousness unless you're a huge fan. Once it's off the playlist it might as well have never existed. The only recurrents they play from the past 5-10 years are proper hits that are all over Radio 1 anyway. At least Radio 1 stand by their A-list songs! Radio 2 is the most popular station but if you asked 99% of people which Kaiser Chiefs songs they know they would name the ones from their Radio 1 days even though Radio 2 promote each of their albums heavily even when they're called stupid things like 'Duck'.

Someone once told me that The Wombats were Gen Z's second-favourite 2000s guitar band after the Arctic Monkeys, is this true? Would explain how they've maintained so much Radio 1 support over the years and seen so many other guitar bands come and go.

They may well get the bug again and return to the studio but I think a lot of people got sick of the lounge act crooner stuff. I liked it but another album of it might be a bit much. They'd have to go back to their festival anthem sound or do something very different but also energetic. Whenever Radio 1 play an Arctic Monkeys song as a recurrent it is rarely anything like There Must Be A Mirrorball, Body Paint or Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino, they just revert back to the AM stuff even thought that's old AF now. Like when they ignore Stormzy's early 2020s 'chilled' crooner stuff and just spin his 2017/2019 hits as if shit like Hide and Seek + Fireplace never happened. Obviously they love a bit of Backbone but that was credited to our good friend Jason Status. They have a particular liking for the sixth single off AM, Snap Out Of It. Or they could leave it 15 years and get the Oasis/Stone Roses money but they might have to accept a discount as there's no evidence they completely despise each other so I don't know if it would be that much of a massively unlikely heartwarming spectacle etc. They'll definitely be too old for the Radio 1 playlist by then though.

I bet if Oasis DID put anything new out Radio 1 would pretend not to playlist it but still have it on several times a day like Dai Dai. Think they kind of did this with Wall of Glass off of Liam. The Gallaghers could always work with a K-Pop band to make it "published list on the internet" official. God I'd like to hear that.

Feel like the R1 Playlist team almost certainly lurk on here anyway. There have been many times where we've all moaned about the absence of certain songs only for them to magically appear on the playlist the next week. This is the best focus group they could ever have! And they get it for free! Which other forum would they look at especially now Popjustice is gone?

And that is probably why they still get on R1 and in the charts. They may be cynical and calculating in the way they collaborate with people teenagers like but there's no denying it works! Maybe U2 should have done that in 2009 instead of putting out shite like Get On Your Boots and in 2014 rather than infecting people's phones with a load of unsolicited bland dadrock slop even their most loyal long-term fans couldn't be that bothered with.

He was handed a bit of a poisoned chalice replacing Scott and Chris and it's no wonder people were so relieved when him and Vicky were put out their misery by Matt and Mollie but I did see a lot of people saying he didn't come across well on IAC, didn't watch it myself though. The few times I did listen to Dean and Vicky in the afternoon it was a very drab and miserable experience compared to what came before. Did feel like D+V were 'stalking horses' put there to absorb all the listener anger and disappointment before the real successors M+M came in. I did feel sorry for Dean when he was doing his farewell speech and said "my heart hurts today". But as you say, once you've been demoted from daytime to early breakfast, your R1 days are numbered! Feels weird that Aled is sacking so many of his own recruits or at least happily letting them go.

He's from Newton Aycliffe too, where I used to live on and off for many years! He first started covering about four years ago so he's definitely worked hard and been very patient. I still can't get my head around Dean and Nat being gone already, they were supposed to be the future of Radio 1. Shame James Cusack had to go too to make way for Emil, would have been great if there'd been a place for both of them.

Didn't know about the n*nce bit, will look it up! I just feel the standard has dropped a bit when it comes to the guitar bands R1 get behind. Kind of miss the ones R1 used to love like Two Door Cinema Club and Vaccines. Will they support Foals and Bombay Bicycle Club when they come back or do they now belong to a bygone era? Been quite a while now. I know every guitar band reaches the end of their Radio 1 life eventually, apart from Coldplay. I love a good old dance banger too but will admit the tunes from that genre are starting to get a bit blander and more forgettable, we need some stronger hooks and more robust songwriting. Don't wanna go through the Geese strangled horse vocals thing again but I'll never get the appeal. Definitely don't want to sound like someone's dad though (even though I am), anyone who looks at my personal charts will see that I still love a lot of what Radio 1 get behind (and in any case it's the Radio 2*/6Music**-leaning songs that get on my nerves the most so no point telling me to just go there full-time), plus I'll always listen to it because there's nowhere else to go when you like a bit of everything. And anyway, that's the point isn't it, we all have our own unique tastes on here and that's what makes it fun. *Stella Lefty **Geese, Ezra Collective Seriously, Ezra Collective sound like someone you'd hear smack bang in the middle of a particularly meh Later...With Jools Holland episode in 1997, or the tokenistic act on the Mercury Music Prize shortlist, they don't sound right on daytime Radio 1 at all. They sound like track 15 on a free cover-mounted Q Magazine CD that came out when I was 14.

I was 16 already. Also, where the heck is Bottle by Remi Wolf? They gave her a lorra, lorra love during her first two eras despite no chart action as far as I know and it sounds perfect for them. Did she get dropped or something? Bit of an anthem. Guessing they're done with Jamie T too but was kind of amazing they even supported him in 2022 so far past his commercial peak to be faiir. Also the song's a bit sh!t.

Is Central Cee R1 toast now? The Team kinda slaps, sounds nothing like the cheap landfill rap he made his name with. Kinda like his Ladbroke Grove but more melodic/emotional. And I hated most of his stuff when he was Radio 1 A-list royalty! R1 aren't really into rap at the moment, are they? Suppose they are only following trends and it's not really been big recently on either side of the Atlantic. Not that that stops them trying to make a whole host of mediocre guitar bands like Geese, Royel Otis, MUNA* and Westside Cowboy a thing. At some point there is going to be literally one song on the Radio 1 playlist that's also in the UK Top 40, and that ain't a dig at the former, at least they try to get people into new stuff. *Poundland Haim

And having said all that, Radio 1 have just played Joni Mitchell, J.J. Cale and The Beatles in the past 30 mins, presumably as part of Lizzy McAlpine's Chill Mix, late on a Sunday night admittedly! So good to know they are still much more open to this sort of thing on specialist shows, even though Phil Taggart claimed he was sacked for playing Joy Division too much. I recently heard Benji B do a 2-hour 'give Prince his flowers' special to be fair and it was full of purple deep cuts. And Dan P. Carter was allowed to do a 2-hour Cure special in 2024! I didn't listen and after seeing the comments I am not very excited about future episodes but they can feck right off with only playing the 'Radio 1-approved' acts on that homegrown album thing and repeating songs that they've already played instead, especially with Olivia Dean sounding like she's from about 1966 anyway! Three or four mins of a 'Radio 2 act' or even a Radio X one with a big fanbase but no Beeb airplay on a Sunday teatime isn't going to kill anyone or put the total station in terminal meltdown, especially considering they'd be fine with a lot of the heritage act album chart songs if they were by younger people! Oh well, at least they played that Kasabian one by all accounts, will be interesting to see what they do when it's a pre-2000 act who are even too old for R1 Anthems. Feels like they're only giving Dolly so much chart show airtime because country-pop is huge right now. I mean, what happens when a new Rod Stewart album/compilation gets to the top spot for instance etc? They should give them their few mins of glory whoever it is, lots of non-R1 acts get to #1 in the albums! Just think, we could have had solo Paul Heaton on Radio 1 a few weeks back if this show had started in the summer. The Radio 1-approved acts of today who aren't already on R2 are the Radio 2 acts of tomorrow!

Quite liked that "here's a slap on the jaw!"* one too. *Cheers! Hunger in Your Haunt, of course. I find the more Kerrangy bands fall down a big hole BBC-wise as they get too old for Radio 1, too loud for Radio 2 and not indie enough for 6.
