Yeah, I remember Radio 1 loving this then wondering why it never charted! Good thread on this stuff here.

Yeah only just noticed Jóga didn't chart after seeing it on a Top of the Pops repeat, turns out it was ineligible as it was only released as a "as a three-CD and VHS box set"! Is one of her best songs too.

She's Electric gets on Radio 2 so much you'd think it'd been a real single at the time. Another one: Mardy Bum by Arctic Monkeys - gets on Radio 1 as a throwback a lot so guessing that was some sort of airplay-only single, I was having a bit of a break from the radio around then so not sure.

Sonnet by The Verve just came into my head and it got me thinking, can you recall any others that got loads of radio play but weren't recognised as official singles for whatever reason? In this case it couldn't chart because it was released as part of a box set of 12" singles. I have also got: Don't Panic/God Put A Smile Upon Your Face/The Hardest Part by Coldplay and Idioteque by Radiohead, the latter of which didn't come out in any physical form as a single? There must be a few more. Obviously it wouldn't even matter now as most things don't even have a physical release. Go!

Yeah, I know sometimes Capital playlist 'buzz' singles for a couple of weeks but otherwise, if it's on the Radio 1/2/6/X playlists I'm treating it as a single regardless of whether I actually listen to the station or not! It's a far cry from going to buy them at Woolies for £1.99 and looking forward to the b-sides etc. Have just come to the conclusion that substantial airplay = single, whichever station is doing it!

I have listened to lots of Radio 2 in the car this week as went to my 50-year-old mate's who stopped listening to Radio 1 in about 2014. Little Bit Closer sounded great and Spike Island growing on me, definitely in no rush to hear the new Gary Barlow and Beverley Knight* ones again though. It's good that at least most R1 pop gets on R2 too so we at least get some current relevant stuff during these road trips. *They are obsessed with her I heard it on Radio 2 first! Admittedly on Jo Whiley, don't think the drug reference made the cut though. Does sound great in the sun - not massively into his new album as it gets a bit midtempo, bland and samey but that's another great single from him. I don't disagree with everything he's done this era. B-side now on streaming Tyrants is better than half the album!

I'll treat Up From The Bottom as a real single then! Is so hard to tell these days, especially when bands fall down a hole between being too old for R1 and too loud for R2. But looks like a lot of those do end up on X. Not a station for me, I'm afraid but good to know these things are getting airplay somewhere. Is nobody playing The Hives? Enough Is Enough is a banger!

There's not that much left to be honest thanks to the great work of people like Pop Music Activism etc, but there are still various things I wish I could stream but can't, not just #1's but tracks like Lucid's I Can't Help Myself, Bizarre Inc's I'm Gonna Get You and Wind It Up by the Prodigy, which disappeared completely a while ago, presumably due to a sample. I would also like to see the remaining Manics b-sides added and I heard some Beautiful South b-sides are great but it just seems to be their albums and compilations on there. Also Muse did a great cover of Popcorn you can't get on Spotify. Also missing Love Rollercoaster by Red Hot Chili Peppers and ironically the UK single mix of Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey) by De La Soul, ironic because that WAS on there before they added the rest of their early stuff following various legal battles. All the other versions of that are sh!t and wrong. Guessing we'll never have the right version of Toca's Miracle by Fragma (yes i know it got to #1) or 2 People by Jean Jacques Smoothie for contractual reasons. Also the single edit of Playing With Knives wouldn't go amiss, absolutely euphoric but don't need seven minutes of it every time - see also various Underworld singles. And where's Fat Neck by Black Grape in its original form? Plus the Fluke Minimix of Spooky by New Order - the original version is incorrectly tagged as this but it's just the one from the album. Would also like Blur's 2010 one-off limited edition single Fool's Day. Gotta say my 'Not On Spotify' playlist is tiny now compared to what it was like 5-10 years ago, so that's good. So, is there anything left you're dying to stream legally but are still unable to?

Wonder if these will ever turn up. Kind of makes you miss the halcyon days of multiple b-sides. "On the second B-side (the single was released as a "double B-side") of the 7" and 12" singles was another popular song from Spitting Image, "I've Never Met a Nice South African", which mocked the apartheid-era nation's white people. The 12" single also contained "Hello, You Must Be Going", a parody of Phil Collins who seems as much concerned about his receding hairline as his failed relationship, and "We're Scared of Bob", a parody of the Band Aid / USA for Africa charity records with the various artists suggesting they were only making the record because they were too afraid to say no when Bob Geldof asked them".

This is brilliant news. I was three in 1986 so don't remember it from the time but claiming fake nostalgia anyway. What a time to be alive. Sticking a deckchair up my nose to celebrate. Just feel like everything of note ever should be available digitally by this point, it's ludicrous I can't stream things like I Can't Help Myself by Lucid in 2025.
