Ooh it's close. How do we know when we have a victor?
  2. This makes me happy. I listen to it quite a lot! I was a teenager in the nineties and their name was pretty much MOR mud in the indie snob music press. Yet they are supercool now thanks to the likes of Haim and countless others.
  3. Seriously though, when Bowie and Prince passed away the R1 Chart Show was full of their immortal hits. Bowiegeddon was brilliant and it was so amazing to hear Purple Rain back in the top ten and on the nation's flagship youth station again (I say 'again', I was 1 in 1984). But streaming wasn't that popular then. Once more people cottoned onto it, the chart almost ground to a halt and fun stuff like this stopped happening. See also: the Ace of Spades beating its original peak. Was so thrilling to hear Greg James spinning that in Jan 2016. Anyway, this is all inspired by Dreams off of Fleetwood Mac looking set to make a spectacular re-entry on Friday. But why's it so high? Many ancient songs have done well on TikTok but not even got close to the Top 40. Have the label requested a reset or is it just absolutely smashing it on streaming? And nobody's even had to die to make this happen!

I've never really got into Biffy by the way but I do think Black Chandalier and Instant History are great. Probably Many of Horror too (or as Matt Curdle would call it, When We Collide).

I voted for Biffy, but there was only a Rizla between them.

    Thanks so much!

I may be struggling with the actual concept of creating a poll. It looked like I'd done it properly until I posted it. If someone could help, that would be great, because this is the debate tearing every household apart this autumn.

Neither are exactly blowing my head off but enjoying the lighters in the air cosy dark night rock of Biffy's as well as the instantly anthemic pop of Becky's. The latter definitely has more interesting lyrics, about disappointing parents.

Christ that's early. I think all* these additions are on my own new music playlist already so I don't need to add anything. Maybe I'm really cool. Or perhaps just added a load of New Music Friday things that looked interesting during the past few weeks. *Not counting Disco Living by Bull, who are definitely a new one on me. Sad to see Make No Sound, Undo My Heart, Tap In and Impact consigned to non-recurrent history. I've been listening to Capital Dance a lot so Impact feels a lot bigger than that playlist run would suggest. I wonder which Space would win in a poll.

The bar was high and had to bid a sad farewell to a 30-40 pretty decent tracks. Only absolute stormers being considered going forward. Flows rather well though! Baby It's You closes 'disc 1', with Cardigan kicking off the second one.
  13. Cheers both, if Exile isn't a proper single yet it definitely should be - perfect for autumn! This is all based on my stats so I didn't go out of my way to make it happen but glad Let's Love went top ten, a few years ago it would have been an official chart smash considering the names involved! Even if it is very 1985.

  16. Yes, this is as early as funk but I need to do another fake audio TOTP based on this for private lols and I promise not to stream any recent music until Friday. It's very slow despite my generous number of streams for very recent stuff over the past few days. Ouch at those drops for Nothing But Thieves and Bring Me The Horizon. It's almost as if I got bored of them extremely quickly. And don't forget, most albums are shit. Also, nothing on my new music playlist is exactly setting my world on fire so don't expect a life-affirming chart next week either. Why haven't R1 given Fire any daytime love yet? Have the most wonderful week! 01 (03) YTRAM feat. Elderbrook: Fire (38-6-3-1) 02 (05) Karen Harding x Digital Farm Animals: Undo My Heart (29-10-5-2) 03 (04) 24kGolden feat. 17. Lols at Mabel. The amount of people that have actually streamed that all the way through must be minuscule. I can see why streaming was needed for the singles but they probably should have either left the albums alone or only acknowledged entire streams of albums. Fair enough if I listen to Queen's Greatest Hits in its entirety but me slamming on a bit of BoRap and it counting towards the album chart is ludicrous!
  18. I have listened to folklore. It was very long. But the parts I enjoyed were very good. It has scored a #1 and another top ten hit on my personal chart which is also of no consequence at all.
  19. Dreams off of Fleetwood Mac off of six years before I was born at #85 today. Investigated this strange and beautiful occurence and found out it was inevitably Tik Tok-related. Hope it gathers more steam than Break My Stride did but will obviously be penalised cos it's 43 years old. Only realised its brilliance over the past few years as was more au fait with the Corrs version (from my long gone teenage years) which doesn't have the same gorgeous muted yet exquisite production. Very fond memories of Everywhere as a five-year-old - the day that was on early 10's daytime R1 cos horse-based bank ad was wonderful. If the download era had one thing going for it, it was stuff like that firmly penetrating the top 40. Wasn't Running Up That Hill in a couple of times? We could have Everton FC today if it wasn't for that pesky streaming. We don't even get recently deceased legends going Top 40 now. The Bowiegeddon chart show in Jan 16 was class, as was the Prince one. And Ace of Spades getting a new peak! I bet Madge would get f*** all now if she took her last breath.
  20. I enjoyed Ware but the retro 70s disco-funk influence got a bit much over the course of a whole album and I vastly prefer the first two. The third was too Radio 2/Mothers' Day CD for me on the whole. 7/10 for What's Your Pleasure? Chromatica improves in its second half I feel. The last couple on Future Nostalgia are shockers, in my opinion which is of no consquence at all.
  21. Really enjoyed the first Dream Wife album but this one hasn't really clicked with me, didn't seem to have the glorious hooks of songs like Fire. I was really anti-Idles until Model Village, which I thought was pretty banging and a great opener for Annie Mac's earlier start. Fell In Love With The City is the only Another Sky track I've been able to get into but I will give Idles and AS a spin!
  22. Think I have definitely become a singles guy. I have been going back through loads of 2020 albums and the only things I'm giving anything above a 7/10 to are Glass Animals and Fontaines DC, neither of which are perfect. There was a lot of love for Future Nostalgia and Chromatica but I think they came out at just the right time, when uptempo melodic escapism was the order of the day. Both have several average-to-poor tracks. Also, over recent years we've had this trend of albums (not just by 'heritage acts' living off pre-orders who go 8-OUT) having laughably short runs whilst the Top 40 is full of classic albums and greatest hits that people aren't even listening to all the way through. So anyway, what was the last album you heard where you felt every song could be a single? I'm all ears!

Not overwhelmed with the adds this week - have checked them all out on (insert streaming service here). Think I said before that songs feel bigger when I've heard them on daytime radio (if I don't they feel like b-sides or album tracks - if I like a track I'm more likely to start loving it when it feels 'big' and communal) but now Capital Dance is in my life lots of dance tracks R1 don't bother with outside of the specialist shows are about to seem huge! I'm normally 80/20 between Radio 1 and 2 but this is looking like a gamechanger, hope they actually publish their new music playlist. Might be a bit crappy when the ads inevitably come in though. Wish Tap In, Kyoto and yes even Model Village weren't stalling. You really have to be in the right place at the right time to hear these C-C-C-OUT tracks, and once they're gone you'll never hear them on daytime R1 ever again! Quick question - do you hear many B-list stallers on there once they're gone? I've only heard a very small number of things played as recurrents, which tend to be things that were on the A-list for a thousand years. Maybe someone could make a comprehensive list of massive hits the station played reluctantly, like WAP, Savage Love, Dance Monkey and Cheerleader (whOooOoOO). Also, this 'what's a proper single' thing. Someone said today they couldn't tell the difference between Sia's promotional and proper singles. This is especially true of dance acts who are constantly chucking low-key stuff out there. Everything was so much easier when a single was a single and almost everything of note was a Top 40 hit, but there's no going back!
  24. Always wondered why this didn't make the playlist. It's perfect for them and catchy as hell. Banger! A #3 in my PC in June!

What a surprise this was! Takes a lot to get me to listen to commercial radio but really enjoyed tuning in this teatime. Lots of deep cuts too, not just the overplayed dance anthems we've all heard countless times. Will take a while to get used to him saying 'Capital Dance' and not 'Radio 1' but I think I will be listening a lot. Knew he'd be back on air somewhere before long but didn't expect it to be within five days!
