Yes, and this isn't a very daytime Radio 1 song either. People often ask if a band has ever returned after being ditched by daytime R1. If I remember rightly, they were ignored for several albums until Greg started spot-playing Bubblegum and it ended up on the playlist. It's nice to see them there and the song does have a great message but not really feeling it that much, seems rather bizarre that they are getting daytime support. It's VERY 6 Music. The singles from the previous one were excellent though. Also, someone on DigitalSpy was amazed that Amyl and the Sniffers were on the playlist. People that haven't listened for years really do think it is something it isn't i.e. a state-funded Capital.

Self Esteem kicks off September by reaching the chart summit with her first ever hit, the suitably autumnal (Girl) Crush (think it actually came out in February but it was a R1 BBC Introducing track of the week recently so that will do me) as The 1975's raucous People enters the top three. Chart on Wednesdays from now on. There's increasing indie and rock domination not only in the top ten but across the chart, with Foals providing possibly the heaviest chart-topper yet and bagging their first-ever #1 in the process after scoring three top ten hits earlier this year. The 1975 enjoy the second-highest new entry of the week with their fieriest single yet, with Clairo, Self Esteem, Sleater-Kinney and Haim also now looking like genuine contenders for the next #1. Ritual and Never Be Alone (actually vastly superior to Thing For You in my book) finally find their way into the chart after bubbling under for several weeks, and there's an epic drop out of the Top 40 for Rosalía, who will surely return soon enough. Still no sign of Edward Christopher Sheeran, MBE. Meanwhile, Two Door Cinema Club prop up the Top 40 with new single Once, which means half of False Alarm has now had chart representation. I was wondering if the lack of daytime R1 play was making me prejudiced and making these songs seem less credible and important but no, Salted Caramel Ice Cream and Hungry Child probably didn't deserve to make the playlist as they are very meh. Not that they were ever into Metronomy much. Yay, love the fact Smells Like Teen Spirit is still a R1 song. Will never get old!

Second time Ed has denied a late pop legend a glorious posthumous chart-topper. I don't actually the mind this song compared to his other singles but he has reached peak smugness in the video. He needs a long break, but obviously won't have one as terrified of people moving on from him. In a bit of a pre-autumn lull but there are seven chart entries of varying quality to get our teeth into. Not really been bothered about Self Esteem other than her song with Django Django before but Girl Crush has really won me over and got me in the mood for the dying of the year. Think I only remember one Slow Club song. She is an odd artist in that she's too 6 Music for Radio 1 and vice versa. Bags turned out to be pretty infectious, and You Already Know is back again now it's being properly pushed despite only ever threatening to get me right in the feels. The stats don't lie! August is traditionally a tad frustrating but high hopes for Q4 and the weeks leading up to it. We just seem to be rather short of songs I just can't help but play time and time again currently. I don't know whether the fact the biggest "indie" bands Radio 1 has to offer are the same I was loving around a decade ago is a good or bad thing. But very much enjoyng the longevity of Foals. TDCC, Friendly Fires, Bon Iver, Vampire Weekend etc. It would be nice to be won over by a blindingly good new guitar band, but I definitely don't feel these acts are complacently retreading old ground. Speaking of which, very impressed with the Sleater-Kinney album. Haven't Bring Me the Horizon been around since the dawn of time too? But anyway, congratulations to drum 'n' bass veteran Nicolaas Douwma! I believe this is our first instrumental chart-topper.
