The idea of a pre-recorded daytime show especially on a weekday* is absolute sacrilege. Why can't she do it live if she's so good? AND we have to lose Matt and Mollie for six consecutive Thursdays! Reminds me of when R1 were obsessed with YouTubers then they all lasted about five minutes, their followers didn't go to R1, the regular listeners hated it and it was over before it began. Did Aled learn nothing from Danny Beardgate? *I remember people being really annoyed when we were stuck with a pre-recorded Sara Cox on a Sunday morning too but it's a really bad idea on weekdays when loads more people are listening and they want to hear the presenter react to things in real-time. You can get away with it on specialist shows late at night I suppose but I think most people would much rather the DJ be live, this is probably why I can't get on with the R1 Anthems and Dance spin-off stations that much. Music radio really needs to be live, especially before a certain time of day.

Listening to Mylo and Rosie and thinking it's quite mad how much 90s Radio 1 hated 80s Radio 1. Nowadays you hear songs from 10, 20, 25 years ago all the time on Radio 1, 30 if it's things like Firestarter, Insomnia and Born Slippy. And something like Shut Up and Dance that was just on feels like ten minutes ago to me. They wouldn't have touched an 11-year-old song like that in the mid-90s or even the 00s if I remember rightly. Heck, they even played Stop by the Spice Girls an hour ago. I wonder how the imaginary young people they target feel about it all. Ten years is ages to someone in the target audience, not so much for all of us pensioners who just refuse to tune out ever obviously. What was it about the 80s they wanted to get away from so much? Associations with cheesy DJs? Did the 80s sound more dated then than they do now? They'll slip in a song from 2010 like Alejandro or California Gurls without batting an eyelid now. They certainly weren't playing very much from 1984 in 2000. I remember, I was there. And now Shake It Off is on! And Sing, also from 12 years ago! How far back should R1 go in your opinion? I suppose now R1 Anthems is a thing they have an excuse for randomly dropping in songs from totally different eras as it helps promote that. I guess it's ironic how I'm one of the old fart listeners that wants more new music, not less. I'm sure someone with massive pop culture analysis skills has a very deep and intellectual answer to this that's all about streaming culture, slowdowns in pop production techniques etc.

Sub Focus & bbyclose's On & On has been on daytime quite a few times too, no idea why that wasn't officially playlisted, did pretty well in the lower reaches of the Top 100 as well if I remember rightly, hung around a while.

What are the others? There have been a few periods where I've not been listening as I've been having my own 'fake Radio 1' sessions on Spotify where I bring the rare half-decent Radio 2/6-only songs into it too. But I always end up going back as I miss the content, interaction and general sense of community. Damn, just realised that I'm finally now older than every single daytime R1 presenter now that Rickie and Melvin have gone. Oh well, it was fun whilst it lasted. Still younger than Benji B, Dan P. Carter and Pete Tong and I don't suspect they are going anywhere anytime soon! I will always need a new music station and R1 is quite obviously the only credible option but I sometimes worry that eventually there will be nobody I can relate to. However, Sam and Danni must still be in their twenties and they're really fun to listen to, they have that classic R1 Mark and Lard/Scott and Chris/Dev and Alice/Matt and Mollie/Greg-esque fusion of silliness and smartness I love. Even Moyles when he wasn't being a Richard Head, got more likeable towards the end I feel. Also, are R1 done with Remi Wolf? Hope not, she had some amazing tunes and the new ones I've been Spotifying are pretty decent too.

Sounds huge, would be great if it went to #1 but who knows with Miley these days? She seems to jump between big eras and low-key ones. You can never write her off though and she's only 33 which is reasonably young in today's pop terms. Plus it's a bit of a banger! I reckon the pre-packaged hits playlist-streaming public will be up for this song, feels like what we all need in an age of endless Reining in Boston and Texas.

So Loser by Tame Impala is the latest song they're pretending isn't on the playlist but is after Dai Dai? Heard it twice yesterday morning, added it to my Spotify version of the playlist, don't know why they do this. If it's on three or four times a day it's on the bloody playlist whether it's officially listed or not!

I like to pay once or twice a year to get rid of all those infuriating 'remastered' tags, Christmas is a great time for that.

Yeah, I remember them playing Groove Is In The Heart etc, that was 30 years old even then! At the time they were very relaxed about how old the tunes were as it was all about just keeping our spirits up. It was a nice treat during an awful time. And GITH never gets old tbf! Before R1 Anthems or Radio 1's Greatest Hits as it was originally called you rarely heard anything over five years old outside of the NIckstape/Ten Minute Takeover if I remember rightly. I do hear quite a lot of 90s on Radio 1 Anthems and R1 Dance even though the former in particular is supposed to be all about the 21st century, The biggest Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Spice Girls and Oasis hits will have a place in the Radio 1 world for quite some time yet though I think, they don't really age.

There's still been a change, until a few years back most recurrents were from the past five years, now older ones appear much more regularly.

Definitely more Anthems popping up in normal shows these days even outside of features, Viva La Vida on now for no particular reason and that's from 18 years ago!

Feels like total bollox especially in this day and age when they share so much new music with Radio 2. I'll always love new music (and fun content, a lot of the stuff the presenters talk about like going on holiday, being stuck in traffic jams, going to gigs, watching telly etc isn't really age-specific anyway) and R1 will always be the best source for it. It won't be long until S+D are over 30 too. I find them very relatable at 43! They probably need to stop saying 'Uncle Greg' though. If I remember rightly, Greg talks about how much he hates the ageism/target audience thing in his book!

This tune really punished me.

Poor MadgeKylie. They have shown both a lot of previously unforeseen love over recent years considering their (irrelevant) advancing ages and the enormous gaps before they were last playlisted as lead artists so I thought this would get more spins. Am I right in thinking that went 8-OUT? I thought they released more physicals? Anyway, think someone said Bring Your Love had become a R1 recurrent so I am having a bit of that. It was A-listed after all! Anyway my late summer/autumn '26 playlist (basically Alternative Now 126) is filling up fast already and it's only August 22nd, I reckon this could be a strong one, tonnes of great dance stuff in particular on the R1 playlist right now.
