HiyaLuv!

I like the ancient classics coming back (and it's unlikely they will be back for an annoyingly long period of time) but not the ones from the past year or so hanging around indefinitely by default just because nobody's put out much that really clicks with the masses recently. Even Harry Styles and Olivia R couldn't manage it properly and they are massive names. Rein Me In keeps seeing these big comebacks come and go. TL;DR: FFS WILL SOMEONE FINALLY RELEASE A REALLY GOOD ANTHEMIC SONG THAT APPEALS TO A HUGE RANGE OF PEOPLE ACROSS VARIOUS DEMOGRAPHICS SO WE CAN FINALLY REIN REIN ME IN IN FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. And I LIKE Sam Fender! But even he must know this is average by his standards.

1 Sam Fender & Olivia Dean - Rein Me In 2 Tame Impala - Dracula 3 Michael Jackson - Billie Jean 4 Alex Warren - FEVER DREAM 5 Olivia Rodrigo - drop dead 6 Zara Larsson - Lush Life 7 The Chemical Brothers - Go 8 sombr - Homewrecker 9 Michael Jackson - Beat It 10 Justin Bieber feat. Nicki Minaj - Beauty and a Beat I'm old enough to remember when the charts were dominated by this thing called "new music", remember that? Still, it's amazing to see Go finally getting its flowers after 11 years. Tbf I love all the throwback songs. Most new stuff really isn't clicking with the public this year. Only three of these originally came out in 2026. How many genuine new hits have we had so far? It's MAY! Think we urgently need some new chart rules tbh as much i love rediscovering the viral classics.

I made a virtual 5CD box set of songs that weren't already on my 90s Alternative Nows and this is the result. A lot of the tracks are ones from people who had two out in the same Now 'window' so I had to make difficult decisions i.e. for AN28 I choose Supersonic over Shakermaker but now songs like that can finally have their day in the sunsheeeeine. There are also a few things that didn't go Top 40 then but have achieved "indie classic" status since like Razzmatazz by Pulp. I'd love to say I didn't use AI for the artwork but sadly I did. Looking forward to soundtracking my Sunday with this in any case. You know it's the start of a new CD when you hear a big old bomb blast. Glad I remembered Mr Blobby, it would have been cultural blasphemy to omit him. As ever 'alternative' doesn't mean blokes with guitars although there are lots of them on here, this is a spin-off from my main series of reimagined numbered Nows that feature my own personalised tracklists of recent chart and radio hits. Think I set my Madge expectations way too high (#1!) but Top 20 would be great if she can hold on.

Amazed how much I liked and streamed Fever Dream. Inevitably back to beige now!

Don't Make Me Love U was great, shame R1 have dumped her. This, however, is proper lazy cynical shite. Write your own chorus FFS!

I don't think they're only playing it because of Sabrina. I think they expected it to do well because of all the online hype and didn't wanna be on the back foot again after Padam Padam. And yes, they might have realised they are more of a new music station than a youth one after all. I bet hardly anyone on here is 15-29 (I can tell by their pop nostalgia anecdotes from like 1999 or much earlier) and a lot of us appear to still be R1 listeners. My two closest friends are 40 and 43 and listen to it all the time! Plus there must have been lots of times where they have snubbed veteran ft. hot chart star songs. Admittedly the only one I can think of right now is Pet Shop Boys ft. Example in 2013 which was ace but there's gotta be loads more! And there's been a lot of Madonna awareness amongst the younger people over the past three years anyway with Popular and the multiple re-entries. Also it's her best and most instantly appealing lead single since 2008 and they'd have been ALL OVER it if was by any female pop star they normally support anyway!

Finally!

Stay Love dropped to #100 in its second week, blimey. Thought that was going to be quite big for him.

I did say they were more relaxed about age these days so I'm not massively surprised about the Madge news! I reckon Padam Padam was a major breakthrough and this wouldn't have happened without that. At the end of the day they SAY Radio 1 is all about young listeners but a lot of us see it as the only credible new music station around (sorry Capital) so will listen for hours on end even when we're like 13 years out of the demographic like I am (in the past most 43-year-olds would have grown out of new pop music a long time ago but as someone who started in 1988 and has no intention of stopping - ever - because it's my main hobby, I say "FCUK THAT!"), and there's no denying there's been a lot of global internet hype around this song and new era, obviously getting Sabby C on board has helped a lot. They must be predicting a bit of a hit and don't want to be behind the curve again. UPDATE: Have now heard the song and it's decent, it's no Like A Prayer admittedly but totally something they would play anyway if a 25-year-old was the lead artist. Or if it was by Dua Lipa!

And still no Satisfaction Skank even though they've played it 50 times in the past 30 days! Adding it to my Spotify version of the playlist anyway for that reason, it might as well be on. Doing the same with House Tour, it's got a lot of spins recently and presumably coming next week. Sad to see Alok and Chris Stussy gone already!

The sound of Rein Me In is starting to ring like tinnitus.

Drop Dead seems to have had mixed reviews so far but I like it. Can't wait to see it rein Rein Me In in!

I have just spent an hour or two compiling a load of 2010s songs that didn't quite make my Alternative Now volumes 75 - 104 either because I couldn't quite fit them in and/or the artist had a better song out in that Now 'era', or I didn't realise how good it was when I complied the originals. It's split into five discs with a big old bomb blast sound effect between each 'CD' and may be subject to change if new ideas come into my head over coming months/years/decades. But for now, here is 'ALTERNATIVE NOW 2010s'.

If you want loads of new entries, come back next week as there's a tonne of things bubbling under. In the meantime, please check out my new YouTube channel How Did They Get So Big? if you haven't already. It's my last-ditch attempt at returning to my old income after AI took a massive 5hit on my 15-year content writing career. I was getting more and more views every day until I added the Harry Styles and Taylor Swift ones, then they weirdly dried up. Thought those would make it better if anything! Way in the lead is How Did Ed Sheeran Get So Big? That was just going up, up, up until Styles and Swift weirdly cooked my progress! And don't forget I recently interviewed the man who may well be the next Radio 2 breakfast host if he actually wants the job - click here. Plus I just made this after realising I had loads of great 2010s tunes missing from my Alternative Nows. THIS WEEK'S TOP 40 01 (02) Rosalía ft. Welcome to Hadjiworld. Anyway, you have done a great job and I wish these were real companion volumes! Would be great if you could do the 80s and remaining 90s ones but I understand if you've run out of steam!

Goddammit, rein Rein Me In in! Songs that were released as singles in the summer shouldn't be peaking nearly a year later (and it's not like this has been 're-issued' or whatever the modern equivalent of that is). ACR is making absolutely no difference now, these charts are just as stale as those of 2016 before it was introduced. Made a video about it and the slow as heck chart in general as you may have seen, sorry about using AI for the artwork, it's a temporary thing whilst I work out what the bloody hell I'm doing! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvKUbQL4C4E&feature=youtu.be

I wonder if there's a hope in hell that R1 will playlist the new Muse single, eight years after they were last on the playlist. If that was by a younger band they would be all over it, it sounds fine for R1. Fits R1 more than R2, who actually have playlisted it. They let that Gorillaz* whistling thing on for a few weeks and Damon is pushing 60! *And that was a 15.5 year gap!

Lykke Li in 2026! Did shock me when they played her the other afternoon. Didn't have that on my bingo card, not complaining though.

Been discussing this on another thread, was gonna just do two videos about how both artists became so popular but I'm increasingly tempted to do a 'How Did Rein Me In Get So Big?' clip and kill two birds with one stone. My God, the charts are fcuked. As much as I like Sam Fender, this very mid song by his earlier standards wouldn't have been anywhere near as successful in the physical or download days! It's been a slow year so far for big songs that people have really latched onto so it's just there by default. Hypersonic Missiles got to #48 (which seems insane now) and that's a thousand times better! #reinreinmeinin https://www.youtube.com/@howdidtheygetsobig
