Sam Fender - People Watching
He is a bit ploddy these days, isn't he? I love the lad but I'm listening to Dead Boys and it feels miles apart from most of his recent stuff. I suppose being one of the UK's richest musicians will do that to you. He does deserve every penny, I'm just not getting the thrills I used to get from his music right now. Needs to do more AYEs!

Radio 1 Playlist (24/10/25): The boy whose wine ran out
I think Biffy might have another era in them yet, they tick the box Foos were ticking. Feels like Kerrangy bands get a raw deal BBC-wise as they're too loud for Radio 2 but not indie enough for 6 Music. Still, there's always Radio X, which I have no intention of listening to ever again unless it's a special occasion. Me and commercial radio just don't get on! Who is the guy at Radio 1 who decides who is and isn't relevant anyway? Presumably the Head of Music, which is still Chris Price. Hardly fresh out of university himself. I imagine he sits there all day going: "Lorde? Oh, okay then! Sam Ryder? NOT ANYMORE!!!! Tom Odell? We haven't played him for years...oh he's big on TikTok. ON HE GOES!!!" Whilst pretending all their listeners are under 30 when hardly any of them are.

Time for Alternative Now That's What I Call Music 122 soon! Can't say there's been many tracks released recently that I have adored but these things happen every so often and 2026 will probably be brilliant.

HiyaLuv's Stormers Chart 3.10.25
It's taken me a long time to get on the Dreams bandwagon, I know it's been hanging around the lower reaches of the UK Top 100 for a long time and I have always loved it so I just kept dropping it into my new music sessions to make sure it got at least a week in the fake chart sun!

Radio 1 Playlist (19/09/25): Where is my husband? If he wanted to he would be here all night!
I'd explode with happiness even on the starting salary from 18 years ago! But he deserves every penny and he's a very talented guy. Got to be a challenge getting up at that time, entertaining the nation, coming up with new content ideas and sounding jolly every day no matter what's going on in private. I bet people on Global get loads more! And he seems like the kind of person who would be very generous with it.

Radio 1 Playlist (19/09/25): Where is my husband? If he wanted to he would be here all night!
I definitely like him more than most of his music. A very interesting character with a lot of layers. But I was always more Rudebox and Party Like A Russian than Angels and Something Beautiful. Feel they'd definitely play Candy if it happened now. The playlist regularly features people who are older than he was then, doing blander and more Radio 2-friendly songs than that! But they were under a lot of pressure to move on from his era (basically the 90s). I don't think the likes of Capital see Radio 1 as the threat/huge competitor they did then so they let them get on with it. Think the thirtysomething audience was a lot more lucrative then.

Radio 1 Playlist (19/09/25): Where is my husband? If he wanted to he would be here all night!
Great interview with Greg here, 50-year-olds more than welcome in his eyes! This 15-29 thing is so outdated. As someone said on Unofficialmills, it was put in place many years ago when popular culture, the way people consume it and the radio landscape was totally different. Most Radio 1 A-list songs get on Radio 2 anyway which shows a lot of the musical output is very cross-generational. And I rarely feel too old to appreciate any of the actual content when I tune in. As long as it's people talking about everyday things in humourous ways, it lands fine at 42. Maya Jama would have been unrelatable no matter how young or old I was! https://inews.co.uk/culture/greg-james-privilege-makes-more-qualified-job-not-less-3928972

Radio 1 Playlist (19/09/25): Where is my husband? If he wanted to he would be here all night!
None of the new adds blowing my head off by the way. Nice to see Demi back but it's more of a meh rewrite of Physical by Dua Lipa than Cool For The Summer II. Where is My Husband! has fun old-skool Beyonce/Amerie vibes but might take a few more listens. I do approved of exclamation marks in song titles though.

Radio 1 Playlist (19/09/25): Where is my husband? If he wanted to he would be here all night!
If/when Calvin stops getting such big hits, he'll lose support. No sign of this happening so far though, he seems to follow up every relative flop with a smash. And his image is completely different to Robbie's in 2012. Plus Radio 1 were really pushing the ageism thing then. They welcome us over-30s now even if they're not actively targeting us, back then Ben Cooper was celebrating "scaring off the over-30s", even though he was well over 30 himself, the bloody hypocrite. He literally said he'd "probably always" listen to it himself because he always wanted to hear the next big thing! It's all ridiculous anyway, you've got young kids streaming Fleetwood Mac, plus people in their forties are heavily into lots of R1 playlist stuff, often because it doesn't sound much different to what they grew up with anyway - and lots of it is on Radio 2 as well. Some things sound like music from BEFORE I was born, including several tracks on the current playlist we're talking about right now! Radio 1 shouldn't be a "youth" station, it should be a "youthful" one. Some people feel and act young at 60, and some 25-year-olds might as well be drawing their pensions. It should just concentrate on being a "new music" station, and that will naturally attract young listeners anyway. If Capital want more listeners, they can fight for them via great unmissable content. Why should the BBC hand them over on a plate? I bet it has more listeners over 30 than under 30. They also have a 65-year-old DJ. Obviously some new music isn't suitable for the station but you can just use your common sense to decide what sounds old and tired and what doesn't, and what will actually sound good and powerful on high-energy daytime radio. I'm 42 and I do dip into Radio 2 as well but then sometimes something new but pointless like Chrissie Hynde and K.D. Lang covering Me & Mrs Jones will come on like it did when I listened this week and I'll think "oh FFS do we HAVE to, I'm not 8768716 years old!". Radio 1 really should have definitely playlisted Candy though. It was ironically debuted on there, was #1 for two weeks and they'd have been all over it if it'd been exactly the same but by Olly Murs!

I'd have thought those numbers were decent but then again I don't know what a good number is for a 'contemporary classic'. Maybe someone can enlighten me?

Friday Chart Predictions
I tried my hardest to get into it and it's always nice to see a pop veteran at the chart summit. Just wasn't for me unfortunately! The one with Miley was a bit better but even that didn't make it on my summer '24 playlist, so I'll never be its shotgun rider 'til the day I die. Guess I just prefer funky/dancey Beyoncé!

But as you say, the point still stands. Wish Break My Soul or Cuff It had gone to #1!

I forgot about Texas Hold'Em because I didn't really like it so didn't add it to my relevant pop/radio hits playlist and haven't heard it much as a recurrent on BBC Radio 1 so forgot it existed and now I feel silly.

Friday Chart Predictions
Ed's imperial phase is a bit over isn't it. Oh well, happens to everyone. We're 14 years in. Beyoncé, Coldplay, Gaga etc aren't getting #1 singles anymore but they're still big and relevant etc. Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan won't be dominating the charts in 2039. Next single should definitely be Don't Look Down. He probably should have been a bit more daring and gone for this as the new one. Must admit, the idea of never enduring a 10-week Ed Sheeran #1 ever again does sound quite appealing, even if I've been quite partial to 2020s Ed in small doses. Do teenagers like him?

Ed Sheeran - Play
The main Don't Look Down hook also sounds like Ferrari!

Ed Sheeran - Play
I am certainly not the world's biggest Ed Sheeran fan and spent the first ten years of his career moaning on and on and about about his omnipresence at the time. Though my thoughts kind of softened four years ago with Bad Habits and Shivers, which I actually streamed quite a bit. However I do have to say Don't Look Down is the best thing he has ever done - even if it is more than slightly indebted to Apricots by Bicep according to my ears!
