A travesty for Beach Baby to finish so low. A truly joyous song I've loved since I heard it when it was first released.

2024 United States Presidential Election Thread
The original intention was to prevent candidates concentrating on states such as California. However, that was pre-radio, let alone television and the internet. It was designed for a time when a candidate could address tens of thousands of voters in California, but only hundreds in Delaware. Now, candidates can easily overlook states. Why would candidates bother spending much time in California when we all know that all their electoral college votes will go to the Democrat candidate? The system is designed for an age where campaigning was mostly in rallies or face-to-face. Things have changed since then.

2024 United States Presidential Election Thread
Nobody has said that all states would be battleground states. You have missed the point. The intention oof the Electoral College was to avoid candidates concentrating their efforts on only a handful of states. We now have campaigning concentrated heavily in a handful of states. The only difference is the way those states are chosen and, therefore, which ones they are.

Those polls show how the electoral college is now achieving the very opposite of what it was established for. It was introduced to make sure that the smaller states were not overlooked by candidates in favour of larger, and especially more densely-populated, states. Why spend time in Delaware when you could contact a lot more voters in the same time in California or Texas? Now, however,. there are only six or seven states that actually count in a close race. There is little point in spending much time in California because the Democrats will win. While Florida used to be close (particularly in 2000), it is now solidly Republican. It is highly likely that Harris will win the popular vote (as Democrat candidates have done in almost every election for over 30 years). The power to choose the president rests with a relatively small number of swing voters in a handful of states.

League Two 2024/25 Season
Morecambe seem to going for some sort of record. Starting the season with five straight defeats is not particularly uncommon. However, Morecambe have managed to lose all five games 1-0.

Herbie Flowers has died aged 86. He was a member of Blue Mink and, briefly, T Rex as well as Sky. We can probably ignore the fact that he wrote Grandad as it would be more appropriate to use the RIP slot to play what is probably his most famous contribution to music. He played the bassline on Lou Reed's Walk On The Wild Side.

Nations League 2024/25
We don't even have a national anthem for him to sing or not sing. The dreadful dirge played at England games is the UK anthem, not the English anthem. There isn't an English anthem. Furthermore, the dirge has nothing to do with the country; the verse used is about the monarch.

This week's commentary is available from the front page or the latest news box. There's not a lot happening, so it is rather brief.

Referring a case to the CCRC proves nothing. Andrew Malkinson will be able to tell you why. As I said before, leave to appeal generally requires new evidence. Alternatively, the defence would need to show that a judge made an incorrect ruling or misled the jury in the summing up. So, if the defence challenged the validity of a piece of evidence and the judge ruled that it was valid, the defence could demand a retrial if they could demonstrate that the judge's ruling was incorrect. If the defence didn't challenge the validity of the evidence, that path to allowing an appeal doesn't apply.

Bly lost her QF, so gets a second bronze medal. She was playing the world number two, so it is not a surprise. At just 14, Bly is currently ranked number four in the world.

If the defence questioned the validity of the evidence in the trial, they could now challenge the judge's decision. If they didn't raise any objection, I don't think there is anything they can do. Again, the issue of whether that is right is a separate argument.

2024 Conservative Party Leadership Election
It's hilarious that the Tory party is so split that the "winner" of the first ballot didn't even get one quarter of the available vote. Three MPs thought that there wasn't anyone worth voting for

Bly won her QF today, so she is guaranteed at least another bronze medal. She plays her SF tomorrow. Her QF was conveniently scheduled for break-time, but tomorrow's SF is in lesson time, unfortunately.

For leave to appeal, there needs to be new evidence. If there was evidence available to the defence that they chose not to present, that isn't good enough. Whether that is fair is a separate issue.

Bly has got a bye into the QF of the Women's singles, so she will get another medal if she wins that match. She'll be back at school next week!

I was going to make the same suggestion about writing to your MP. Conveniently, the Labour manifesto included a commitment to introduce legislation on the resale of tickets. It is worth asking your MP to encourage the government to extend the scope of this legislation to cover dynamic pricing. If they are a new MP, don't forget to butter them up by congratulating them on winning  If you are one of those rare people with a Tory MP, it is still worth writing. One of the politicians who has long campaigned against reselling tickets is a Lib Dem peer. It needn't be a particularly p[arty political issue. Some of the artists who have agreed to dynamic pricing have really disappointed me. I would have expected the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Chris Martin and Taylor Swift to oppose it.

Yes, Bly could easily compete in the next four Games. Bearing in mind she has only been playing for three years, she could be a contender for a clutch of medals. Just the singles left for this year.
