Referring a case to the CCRC proves nothing. Andrew Malkinson will be able to tell you why. As I said before, leave to appeal generally requires new evidence. Alternatively, the defence would need to show that a judge made an incorrect ruling or misled the jury in the summing up. So, if the defence challenged the validity of a piece of evidence and the judge ruled that it was valid, the defence could demand a retrial if they could demonstrate that the judge's ruling was incorrect. If the defence didn't challenge the validity of the evidence, that path to allowing an appeal doesn't apply.
  2. Bly lost her QF, so gets a second bronze medal. She was playing the world number two, so it is not a surprise. At just 14, Bly is currently ranked number four in the world.

If the defence questioned the validity of the evidence in the trial, they could now challenge the judge's decision. If they didn't raise any objection, I don't think there is anything they can do. Again, the issue of whether that is right is a separate argument.
  4. It's hilarious that the Tory party is so split that the "winner" of the first ballot didn't even get one quarter of the available vote. Three MPs thought that there wasn't anyone worth voting for
  5. Bly won her QF today, so she is guaranteed at least another bronze medal. She plays her SF tomorrow. Her QF was conveniently scheduled for break-time, but tomorrow's SF is in lesson time, unfortunately.

For leave to appeal, there needs to be new evidence. If there was evidence available to the defence that they chose not to present, that isn't good enough. Whether that is fair is a separate issue.
  7. Bly has got a bye into the QF of the Women's singles, so she will get another medal if she wins that match. She'll be back at school next week!

I was going to make the same suggestion about writing to your MP. Conveniently, the Labour manifesto included a commitment to introduce legislation on the resale of tickets. It is worth asking your MP to encourage the government to extend the scope of this legislation to cover dynamic pricing. If they are a new MP, don't forget to butter them up by congratulating them on winning  If you are one of those rare people with a Tory MP, it is still worth writing. One of the politicians who has long campaigned against reselling tickets is a Lib Dem peer. It needn't be a particularly p[arty political issue. Some of the artists who have agreed to dynamic pricing have really disappointed me. I would have expected the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Chris Martin and Taylor Swift to oppose it.
  9. He did a Teddy Swims cover?
  10. Bly has made it on to The Last Leg. How much better can it get?
  11. That's the right answer
  12. Yes, Bly could easily compete in the next four Games. Bearing in mind she has only been playing for three years, she could be a contender for a clutch of medals. Just the singles left for this year.
  13. The good news is that the Daily Mail seems to have decided that the new government has somehow managed to solve every major problem facing this country in just eight weeks. After all, the big issue facing the country now is apparently that Keir Starmer moved a painting.
  14. The original smoking ban led to pubs etc installing outside heaters. If they disappear, that will help to reduce carbon emissions.
  15. This week's waffle can be found from the front page or the latest news box.
  16. Saturday 31st August Arsenal 2-2 Brighton & Hove Albion (12:30) Brentford 0-1 Southampton Everton 0-2 AFC Bournemouth Ipswich Town 1-1 Fulham Leicester City 1-2 Aston Villa Nottingham Forest 1-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers West Ham United 0-2 Manchester City (17:30) Sunday 1st September Chelsea 2-0 Crystal Palace (13:30) Newcastle United 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur (13:30) Manchester United 1-2 Liverpool (16:00)
  17. By a weird coincidence, Laurie Anderson has released a new album today - about Amelia Earhart's final flight.
  18. Four matches for Bly today. Three wins and one defeat means that she is in the last eight of the Mixed Doubles. Her one defeat was in the SF of the Womens' Doubles, but that still means that she gets a bronze medal. Her next match is at 10:00 tomorrow,
  19. The Fun Of It is, indeed, fun.
  20. Time for a bit more about Bly Twomey who I mentioned earlier. She is the Sussex women's table tennis champion, a title she won around the time of her fourteenth birthday. That's the overall women's champion, not para table tennis champion. She was competing against able-bodied women. She's only been playing since she was eleven. A couple years or so ago, one of my colleagues challenged her to a match. He is ultra-competitive and would not have made any concessions. She wiped the floor with him.
  21. And finally, les feu d'artifice!
  22. That was a stunning opening ceremony, and it's great to see the balloon back. A double dose of Christine & The Queens as well
  23. A girl from the school where I work will be competing in the table tennis tomorrow. Good luck Bly!
  24. The Fox News debate didn't exist until Biden dropped out. Trump the invented it. That said, Hasrris needs to start doing some in=depth interviews. So far, she has done as many as our head of state had to do before being installed.

Apparently Paul Arthurs (Bonehead) played a big part in setting this up, so I assume he will be in the line-up.
