  1. Rumours that the Lib Dems have gained one of the Hull seats.
  2. Eastleigh back in Lib Dem hands
  3. First non-Labour seat of the night as Lib Dems win Harrogate.
  4. Labour are apparently saying they think they have lost Sheffield Hallam (Nick Clegg’s old seat) to the Lib Dems.
  5. Very generous comments from both leading candidates in Swindon South.
  6. If Reform get 13 MPs, they will probably have about 14 brain cells between them.
  7. The real rush will be around 03:00 to 04:00.
  8. They are all counted overnight, but smaller constituencies have the advantage of getting the ballot boxes to the count a lot faster. It is up to local councils how many counters they employ.
  9. Mairie Black being refreshingly honest about the SNP performance on C4.
  10. Oh yes, I’d forgotten about that one!
  11. That’s FPTP for you. Utterly ridiculous voting system.
  12. 18 NI plus one other. Presumably Corbyn or Galloway.
  13. In a perverse way, it could be a good thing if Reform win a handful of seats. Their MPs are likely to be utter loons who discredit the party / limited company, scuppering their chances of any further advances.
  14. They still can't announce the exit poll until 22:00.
  15. This is the first time I have had to go to work the day after a general election, so I don't know whether I will last all night! The exit poll will be interesting. The pollsters have generally done their polling in mostly the same constituencies at each election, allowing them to make a direct comparison. This time, some constituencies have been redrawn significantly (or abolished / newly created). There is some evidence that the Tory vote is collapsing more dramatically in their safest seats and that the Labour vote is increasing relatively little in their safest seats. If those seats are not properly represented in the exit poll, the poll may be rather less accurate than it has been in recent elections. If the numbers of Tory / Lib Dem seats are close in the exit poll, expect a discussion on what happens if they get the same number of seats. I assume the Tories will claim that they should be the Official Opposition having won more votes while the Lib Dems claim that both parties should have equal status, possibly alternating turns at the Dispatch Box.
  16. I’d say it’s quite likely. Unfortunately, she is one of relatively few Shadow ministers to have genuine experience in her department. It is, of course, possible that Starmer could simply move her to the Lords.
  17. Indeed. The term supermajority refers to the requirement that something more than a simple majority is required for something to be passed. For example, many organisations require two-thirds of members to vote in favour of a change to their constitution for it to be passed. There is nothing that requires a two-thirds vote in parliament.
  18. There are some highly amusing predictions on social media. They include the Tories just winning more seats than the Lib Dems but, just for a laugh, a group of Labour MPs defect to the Lib Dems and Ed Davey becomes LOTO
  19. Sunak will be an ex-MP by Christmas.
  20. Most? I don’t think I’ve seen any predictions showing them winning that many.
  21. N o, no, no. Kuenssberg has to announce the exit poll. The look on her face will be priceless.

Shame it isn’t in the days of the Golden Goal
  23. Time for Michelle Obama to come to the rescue.
  24. Farage’s boycott is going to leave the BBC with a lot of hours to fill.
  25. That is exactly what I’m saying.
