  1. The Tories' whole strategy seems to be to make up some ridiculous nonsense, claim that it is Labour policy and oppose it. They have even revived the bendy bananas" nonsense. They are promising to legislate to stop councils doing things that no council is even considering doing. Isn't tackling real issues such as inflation rather more important?
  2. It'll be a replacement bus service.
  3. Yet again they're hoping people don't know which party has been in power for the last 13 1/2 years.
  4. Isn't it strange how the term "stealth taxes" has disappeared since 2010? A failure to raise tax allowances would certainly have been described as a stealth tax if we had a Labour government, particularly one that presided over a period of double digit inflation. I still think that there will be tax cuts in the next Budget. They will, of course, be unfunded, but that will be the point. The whole point will be to ask Starmer whether he will reverse them.

  9. Her parents weren't refugees; they were what the right-wing press like to call economic migrants. The woman is pure poison.
  10. Yes, it was 21 (for everybody) at the time. It was reduced to 18 in time for the 1970 General Election.
  11. The gap between Brighton and. Chelsea is bigger now than it was a year ago when Chelsea lured Graham Potter away (in Brighton's favour of course). Chelsea can, presumably, still offer De Zerbi more money than he is getting at Brighton. Would that be enough? The scouting operation that Tony Bloom has built up must be one of the best in the game at the moment. It extends to managers as well as players. Graham Potter had obviously been identified as a target before Chris Hughton was sacked. The club had equally obviously been following De Zerbi on the assumption that Potter would eventually leave for a "bigger" club. The fact that De Zerbi was out of work (after the invasion of Ukraine) meant they didn't even have to pay any compensation for him.
  12. Yes, there were definitely some oddballs in the team. A large part of the book is made up of pen portraits of them. They were, of course, all men. After all women (over 30) hd only had the vote for five years at the time of the election (December 1923).
  13. It should be available at places like Waterstones although you may have to order it.
  14. I'm reading The Men Of 1924 by Peter Clark. It's about the first Labour government in the UK which took office in 1924, published to mark the centenary. It isn't actually published until next week but I have an advance copy as the author is my uncle. It's not at all heavy, so anyone interested in political history should enjoy not.

  18. Made Of Love is the month's BJSC entry from Suedeonia. I really should listen to the whole album some time.
  19. Sunak has claimed to have looked at the costs since he became PM and decided current net-zero policies are not affordable. Leaving aside that the long-term consequences are even less affordable, he clearly hopes that nobody will notice that he was a Treasury minister (effectively deputy to the Chancellor) at the time the commitment was made. In other words, checking that it was affordable was his job.
  20. Roger Whittaker deserves an RIP slot. We've already heard The Last Farewell as a number two single, so Durham Town or New World In The Morning would be decent choices.

She has the right to seek leave to appeal. That is a fundamental part of a fair justice system. Whether a judge grants her permission to appeal is a different matter.

Yes, my solitary BJSC win was, I think, in 2017
