There's been no tied positions since Millward Brown took over chart compilation duties in 1994. If sales are tied to 2 decimal places, I'm sure they simply list tracks in alphabetical order. The one instance that sticks out is when The Beatles catalogue was made available to download at iTunes in November 2010. Alan Jones listed sales of each track that was inside the top 200 on the chart dated 27 November 2010. The sales listed included 118 Blackbird 2019 119 I Am The Walrus 2019 Both tracks had the same panel sales and all sales only came from iTunes. Unless there was another way that the titles could be separated, it looked as if it was simply an alphabetical listing.

I didn't know that the revised chart for 01/01/11 was different to that originally compiled and announced on Radio 1. I meant to add too, that the estimated sales were erroneously added because there were no physical sales for Christmas Day! The computer program which estimated sales for days where sales were missing had just been upgraded and it appears the programmers forgot about the fact that there would be little to no physical sales on Christmas Day. The 4 May 2002 chart was changed after a Dotmusic poster (acerben) contacted the OCC on the Sunday evening to point out 'One Step Too Far' was listed twice on the chart, which chart rules didn't allow. The OCC quickly updated the chart. One of the two entries was the import version and it was this version that was removed. It originally had been listed at #68. The revised chart was published too late for Music Week, which printed the original version of the chart (and got the title of the record wrong, listing it as 'One Stap Too Far').

It happened twice. 17 February 1976 (chart dated 21 February 1976): Radio 1 announced the new number 1 as 'Rodrigo's Guitar Concerto De Aranjuez' by Manuel and the Music Of The Mountains. Then chart compiler BMRB realised there had been a major computer error and the chart was recompiled three hours later. The number 1 was then revealed to be 'December 1963' by the Four Seasons. The whole of the chart was affected by this error. 6 November 1979 (chart dated 10 November 1979): Radio 1 announced the new number 1 as being 'When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman' by Dr Hook. The previous number 1 had been 'One Day At A Time' by Lena Martell. Her record label (Pye Records) somehow noticed an error had been made and asked BMRB to rerun the chart. The following day BMRB revealed that the number 1 was still Lena Martell. Dr Hook did get to number 1 the following week. The error affected only numbers 1 and 2 (some of Lena Martell's sales were added in error to Dr Hook's sales).

4 March 1995 too, and for the same reason (missing information from one retailer, Woolworths i think) The 10 July 1999 chart was reran after sales information from Our Price was missed. The recompiled chart was never made public at the time, and it was never intended to be made public, but is now online at the OCC website. The 11 November 1989 chart as broadcast on Radio 1 was sales to the Friday only. A full chart couldn't be compiled in time due to a fire at Millward Brown's offices on the Sunday. The OCC has the revised chart. The 1 January 2011 charts were reran due to a computer error which led to estimated sales of physical product being added due to a missing day of sales. It doesn't appear that any singles chart positions were affected though.

I took it as meaning a million based on a mixture of downloads and streams (i.e. digital only sales). Apologies if someone else has already suggested this, I've only just noticed the thread and am working my way through it. If this is what Alan Jones meant, then 1,348 tracks have passed a million on downloads or streams or a combination of both. The way AJ has qualified the above, it sounds like he means those tracks have all achieved the million mark on digital consumption alone without the need for physical sales to get the tracks above a million sales.

Sales from 1976 to 1979 will be coming next, once I've finished posting the 1991 weekly charts. The charts from 1976 to 1979 will be the monthly top 200s as I don't have weekly sales for that period. Once I've posted 1976 to 1979, I'll then be posting 1992, 1993 and the first few weeks of 1994. This means that I will have posted weekly (or monthly) and yearly sales figures from January 1976 to February 1994. This is a large part of the period for which actual chart sales data exists.

ERA is the trade body which represents retailers, both digital and physical, in the entertainment sectors of music, videos and games. Previous the organisation was known as the British Association of Record Dealers (BARD) before widening its scope and changing its name about a decade or so ago. Each year ERA publishes a Yearbook which looks back at the previous year. Included in the book are many facts and figures. For music, this covers data relating to sales and streams and includes actual sales figures for the top 20 singles and albums of 2023. For the last 4 years the Yearbook has been free to download. The latest Yearbook was published last week and is available to download from https://www.eraltd.org/yearbook Music statistics are on pages 68 to 89.

They were released on the same label too (Warp Records) and were in the top 20 at the same time.

I think from memory the lowest sale for a number 200 was around 10 or 11 panel sales. Gallup suggested that a record selling about 10 panel sales would have national sales in all shops of around 170 sales. The surprising thing is that even though singles sales declined quite quickly after 1985, the number 200 single sold a consistent amount throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s. It was usually around 10 to 20 per week. The decline was more noticeable among singles at the upper end of the chart.

There wasn't the Christmas takeover on radio like there is now. Even just 10 years ago the airplay chart was largely contemporary hits. The top 20 of the airplay chart this week in 2013 contained 7 Christmas themed songs. It took a while to chart, having been released on Friday 1 October 1976. It charted initially on the Breakers chart at #6, dated 06/11/76 then entered the top 50 the following week at #45. Its run to the top: B6-45-43-28-14-8-2-1.

Sheena easton's single is taken from Santa Claus: The Movie. 'A Spaceman Came Travelling' did peak on the following week's chart, at #40. This chart was based on sales from 22 December to 27 December 1986. It has been close to making the main chart when first released in 1976. I posted the 1976 Christmas chart at haven yesterday and forgot to post it here. It's in the Breakers part of the chart.

I remember Bruno Brookes on the Radio 1 top 40 countdown the previous week trying to explain that the Christmas chart would be announced on Boxing Day although he got himself in a bit of muddle when trying to do so!

The Wham! and Band Aid singles were both re-released and repromoted in December 1985 which accounts for why they both went top 10 once again. I think both the Mud and Greg Lake singles were reissued and repromoted too, possibly off the back of a few older Christmas singles having re-entered the charts in the 1981 to 1984 period.

'Mistletoe & Wine; easily claimed the number 1 spot for Christmas 1988 (on whichever chart is chosen as the Christmas chart) but 'Especially For You' sold very well to end up at #2. In 1988 Christmas Day fell on a sunday. These days that would still mean a new chart being published. At one time it would have meant no chart being compiled. However, by 1988 the technology was in place to compile a new chart but not the staffing to compile it on Christmas Day. As a result, Bruno Brookes counted down the new Gallup chart on Boxing Day, Monday 26 December 1988. This meant that technically the previous week's chart was the Christmas chart. Fortunately the number 1 was the same, which avoids confusion about which record got the Christmas number 1. I'm going to post both charts as both could lay the title to the Christmas chart for 1988.
