What other old acts would you like to see back in the charts
No chance with The Jam I'm afraid, two of the band (Paul Weller and Rick Buckler) haven't spoken in 30 years http://www.wokingnewsandmail.co.uk/?p=365

Gezza's 12 charts of Christmas.......
I've got the following which mainly lists sales for 'Mistletoe And Wine' but which also partly answers your question: 03/12/88: Mistletoe And Wine - 30,000 (#7) 10/12/88: Mistletoe And Wine - 130,000 17/12/88: Mistletoe And Wine - 160,000 Especially For You: 132,000 24/12/88: Mistletoe And Wine: 170,000 Alan Jones reported at the time that on the chart dated 24/12/88 'Mistletoe And Wine' significantly increased its lead at the top which means the maximum 'Especially For You' could have sold would be 142,000 and judging by his comments its likely to be below 140,000.

That said, Whigfield's version was magnificent compared to the Crazy Frog cover version

The Christmas #1 Story
I missed the programme but for Slade - the single spent 9 weeks in the chart in 1973/1974, perhaps they got confused? There's usually a bad piece of research for these programmes...

Gezza's 12 charts of Christmas.......
It did make the top 40 in the Christmas chart of 1985 though, which meant that the top 3 singles from Christmas 1984 were all in the top 40 at Christmas 1985. It's the only time this has ever happened.

Retro Christmas Charts 2003
It was re-released on CD in 2006 which allowed it to chart over that Christmas, the chart rules at the time required a single to have been released as a physical single within the last 52 weeks with the now current rule that allows all tracks to chart regardless of physical release coming in to force the following month, in January 2007. Because 'Merry Xmas Everybody' was released on CD in November 2006 it entered the chart at 83, climbing to 54 the next week and a few weeks later peaking at number 21. 'Fairytale Of New York' recharted in December 2006 because it was re-released on CD in December 2005. It should have been disqualified under the 52 week rule just as it was re-entering the top 10 but the OCC decided to allow it to remain on the chart as the new rules were a month away from coming into force and it would have looked silly to have excluded it at that point.' All I Want For Christmas Is You' couldn't chart because it hadn't been re-released as a physical single and so all its download sales counted for nothing. Had it been allowed to chart in 2006 it would have peaked at number 8, two places below the peak of The Pogues that year.

Retro Christmas Charts 2003
I've added an extra sales figure to my list on page 1 - 'Leave Right Now' by Will Young sold 66,684 at number 6. Alan Jones mentioned in his Music Week sales analysis report of 19/11/12 that this is the highest sales figure of the 21st century for the number 6 position on the singles chart.

Retro Christmas Charts 2003
More nostalgia... Mad World claims Xmas number 1 spot Sunday, Dec 21st 2003 by Alan Jones After a week of to-ing and fro-ing, The Darkness's Christmas Time (Don't Let The Bells End) was pipped to the Christmas number one spot by Michael Andrews featuring Gary Jules' Mad World. Mad World sold 227,500 units last week, compared to Christmas Time's 222,500 units - a margin of just 5,000. The Mad World success came after it had consistently - although marginally - lagged behind The Darkness throughout the past week. The two singles helped pushed the overall singles market to its best week of the year, with Kelly and Ozzy Osbourne's Changes also selling 144,800 units. No previous week this year has seen more than one single sell over 100,000 units. The chart marks a massive success for Sanctuary Group, who co-released Mad World with Paul and Katie Conroy's Adventures label. Sanctuary's second number one single followed a week after its first, with the Osbournes' hit. The Darkness's singles' chart disappointment is more than compensated for by the fact that their album Permission To Land jumped nine places into the Top 10, selling almost 90,000 copies in the past week. The album is on target to top 1m sales before the end of 2003. The album chart is dominated by Dido's 270,000-selling Life For Rent, which beats Will Young's Friday's Child to the summit - it sold 239,000 units in the past week. In third place, Michael Jackson's hits collection defies recent negative publicity by remaining at three and selling 222,000 units in the past week. Overall, the albums market sees all Top Eight albums selling 100,000 or more, in what is traditionally the biggest week for sales of the entire year. from musicweek.com Sales Singles 1 227,547 Gary Jules - Mad World 2 222,561 The Darkness - Christmas Time 3 144,800 Kelly & Ozzy Osbourne - Changes 4 97,000 Bo Selecta - Proper Crimbo 5 73,165 The Idols - Happy Xmas (War Is Over) 6 66,684 Will Young - Leave Right Now 8 28,343 Atomic Kitten - Ladies Night 10 27,200 Sugababes - Too Lost In You 11 27,100 Ble feat Stevie Wonder 12 20,300 Ultrabeat - Feelin' Fine 25 10,000 Fast Food Rockers - I Love Christmas 26 9,600 Billy Mack - Christmas Is All Around Albums 270,652 Dido (1) 239,000 Will Young (2) 222,000 Michael Jackson (3) 164,000 Black Eyed Peas (4) 100,000 Busted (8) 99,000 Sugababes (9) 90,000 Darkness (10) 88,000 Daniel Bedingfield (11) 34,000 Kylie (39) sales from Dotmusic (the last ever posted there before the forums closed) / Music Week

The UK’s Top 150 selling singles of 2012
Chasing Cars has indeed been in the top 200 best sellers of the year every year since it was released. Its sales have been: 2006: 210,606 (year end number 14) 2007: 163,000 (#34) 2008: 109,000 (#95) 2009: 117,600 (#153) 2010: 101,400 (#183) 2011: 128,200 (#157) Quite amazing!

The UK’s Top 150 selling singles of 2012
It should (and probably will) include sales to 29 December which is the last day of the chart sales year 2012 so there shouldn't be any sales missing.

That first ever chart 60 years ago
Dave: you may be interested to know that the OCC have now acknowledged that there was no official chart until 1969, in the Million Sellers book that has just been published. The book does discuss the situation in the 60s where various charts were compiled and none carried the title of being an official chart. The BBC chart is also discussed. Indeed the author of the OCC book does say that the Record Retailer chart became a retrospective official chart. The Guinness Book Of British Hit Singles (the original publication from 1977, not subsequent editions) never attempted to pretend that the Record Retailer chart was an official chart but the massive success of the book created a myth that it was THE chart of record. However in subsequent editions the authors did little to discourage the general belief that the book was based around an official chart for the 1960s. Edit: I've added this as an addendum rather than editing my above post. I think the acknowledgement by the OCC that the Record Retailer chart wasn't the official chart for the 1960s may have been in the "60 Years Of The Official Singles Chart" supplement (published by the OCC) that was included in the Music Week issue dated 9 November 2012. I read both the OCC book and the OCC Music Week supplement on the same day last week so I can't remember which publication stated that. I'll check out which one it was tomorrow though I now believe it may have been the latter publication.

The biggest selling single of every year revealed!
The OCC were seemingly the compilers of the list - the article in liamk97's initial post is taken from the OCC website http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/t...1952-1985-1699/

The biggest selling single of every year revealed!
Plus the best selling single listed for 1952 is not 'Here In My Heart' by Al Martino which was the only number 1 in that first year of the charts. On the first ever chart (dated 15 November 1952) 'Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart' by Vera Lynn was at number 10 and dropped off the chart the following week, never to be seen again. I can only assume that had a chart been compiled earlier than November 1952 the record would have been at number 1 for many weeks.

UK Million Sellers Book (November)
I see amazon have dropped the price of the book down to £9.94. I paid £11.66 just two days ago, I should have waited... http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Million-Seller.../dp/1780387180/

Predict the top 40 songs of 2012
Radio 1 have broadcast the end of year chart at various times of the week in the past few years and there's always been a week of sales missing. This year there should be no reason for a week to be missing as the chart year ends on Saturday 29 December so they could broadcast the chart on either the 30th or 31st of December...

Predict the top 40 songs of 2012
^ ah, but can you predict what the sales of the top 5 will be? There are 9 sales weeks (including the current one) left this year. Will 'We Are Young' pass a million sales? The track should sell about 20k or so this week, can it manage another 70k in 8 weeks?

People nicking posts
Some of the posters at that Facebook group are members of Buzzjack while others are members of Haven and/or ukmix (the admin for that Facebook group posts over at ukmix). To be fair, a number of threads that appear at Buzzjack are also common to the other two boards mentioned above so it's probable that the same information is going to appear elsewhere on the internet. Plus some of it doesn't originate here and is posted here from elsewhere. It's the way its been since the good old days of Dotmusic and Worldpop in the early 2000s where threads were often copied from one site to the other. I do agree though that credit should be given if a thread / post is copied from one board to another.

SAW had two number 1s in the US, both with Rick Astley - 'Never Gonna Give You Up' and 'Together Forever'. 'This Time I Know It's For Real' peaked at number 7.

25 Years Ago 1st sept 1987 John's Top 40
A few excellent songs in your chart popchartfreak! My favourite song at the time was 'The Motive' by Then Jerico. I also loved 'Crazy' by Icehouse though didn't buy it until it finally reached the UK top 40 the following year when it was re-released. I've not heard the Candyfloss Remix of 'Sugar Sugar' and I'm not sure if I want to either!

Martin Talbot, the Managing Director of the Official Chart Company. He was the Editor of Music Week until a few years ago. They all seem to like southern football teams, even Alan Jones does, he's a Wolves supporter. No-one seems to support the northern lot - a good Geordie wouldn't go amiss ;) Nowt wrong with a Newcastle supporter...
