  1. I remember when the American Chart Show was part of the Saturday Sequence in the mid-late eighties with Johnnie Walker, with Laura Gross in America, she left in 1988. Got her final show on tape.

Richard Skinner took over in later years and counted it down.

I don't remember any of those presenters doing the countdown! My era was when Gambo presented it, after he left it seemed to lose direction. There was an American who did it for a short while in about 1986/7 (I think it was probably Dixie Peach, though Gary Byrd did do some show at Radio One), and presumably Johhnie Walker must have presented from about 1987/8. By then, I was working on a Saturday so I probably just never got to hear it.

  2. This is the first time I've heard of AT40 being broadcast in the UK. Some stations carried the rival Rick Dees US top 40 countdown back in the 90s but it wasn't that successful. As Mark says, Radio One also had its own American chart show, first with Paul Gambaccini in the 70s and early 80s then someone like Gary Byrd or Dixie Peach took over and the show was eventually dropped. AT40 used to be heard in Europe on American Forces Network back in the days when Kasey Kasem used to present it, and back then it was the top 40 part of Billboard's Hot 100 that was used. That chart was dropped in 1991. I don't know who compiles it now, but it's not the "proper" chart (ie it's not the Hot 100 top 40).
  3. you still can't beat vinyl, the sound is far better than CD. I've still got a handful of old 12" singles left, back to 1978, and the sound is far, far superior than the same song on CD. There's a richer sound, and as most of the 12" singles I still have are disco / dance type stuff, a far better bass sound.
  4. Here's a list of records this week that would probably be in the chart this coming Sunday were it not for the pesky deletion (and * 52 week) rule!

And just to clear it up, if SOS hadn't been deleted or removed, Unfaithful would not have qualified for the chart until SOS left the top 40.

and if that was the case then SOS would still be eligible. More likely, the label would not have included SOS on the follow-up had it still been the old chart rules - very few labels asked for a song to be removed from the charts following deletion, even though the rules have allowed this back to 1991.
  7. No it wouldn't - it was made ineligible due to the 'chart single cannot be a B-side to a subsequent single whilst still in the top 40' rule.

ah yeah, forgot about that! So that record would have been deleted and removed from the chart under the old deletion rules anyway, assuming the label had asked in time (and we didn't end up with a Daniel Powter situation).
  8. yeh...that is stupid, they could just stop supplying adn "pretend to delete" and see it drop a little. doesn't every album dowload of theirs results in a sale for chasing cars, or is that not how it is done?

downloads of entire albums count only towards the album chart. Downloads of individual tracks count towards the download chart and also the combined singles chart if there is a chart eligible track (eg Chasing Cars).

  9. Here is a list of songs that would currently be in the top 75 were it not for the fact that they have either been deleted or (*) are more than 52 weeks old:

    Top 40

LDN - Lily Allen (original version was released before Smile and deleted, selling solely on downloads)

    Maneater - Nelly Furtado

    Monster - Automatic

    Top 75

    *Numb/Encore - Jay-Z/Linkin Park

    Crazy - Gnarls Barkley

    No Tomorrow - Orson

    *Iris - Goo Goo Dolls

*Bring Me To Life - Evanescence

    *Somebody Told Me - Killers

*All These Things That I've Done - Killers

*In The End - Linkin Park

If we ignore the songs over 52 weeks (those with a *, all of which are selling purely on downloads) SOS by Rihanna would still be in the top 75.

  10. Beyonce enters simply because the album has gone to iTunes etc and people are downloading this track. In the past the release of an album would kill sales of a single, here it actually does the opposite as the track is now available to download.

Has any other song entered so high as a result of the album becoming available to download?

  11. Incidentally. just to confuse things further, a "2 track CD" format doesn't have to have 2 tracks - that is the maximum, it can have just one track, so long as it doesn't exceed 10 minutes. Similarly a maxi-CD can have the same track, running to 20 minutes. A remix single requires at least 2 tracks (a track and a remix of that track) and can run to 40 minutes.

It is possible to release 2 versions of a song spread over 3 formats. So, take a hypothetical song called "Hung Up" ;)

    You can have:

    2 track CD

    Hung Up (original) 9:59

    maxi single

Hung Up (blah blah remix) 19:59

    remix single

    Hung Up (original) 9:59

Hung Up (blah blah remix) 19:59

all perfectly legitimate, so long as the "2 track" single costs the dealer £1.20 to £1.78 and the other two versions cost the dealer at least £1.79.

    No it isn't - 2 track CD's are maximum 10 minutes long.

not necessarily, it depends on the dealer price of the CD with 2 tracks, and the other available formats. A CD single can have just one track and be 19 mins 59 secs long, and still be eligible for the charts. Similarly it can have 2 tracks and run to 12 minutes and still count. A maxi single doesn't need to have 3 tracks.

Deja Vu is available in 3 formats:

    CD single - 2 tracks

CD single - 5 tracks, all mixes of Deja Vu

12" single - 4 tracks, all mixes of Deja Vu

Format one (2 tracks running to 12 minutes) is eligible if it has a dealer price of £1.79 or more, and the other CD version isn't classed as a maxi-single but rather a remix single. The rules aren't clear on how the 12" version fits into all this, but it is clear on how CD versions are to be treated.

  13. there were times when TOTP2 was getting more viewers than TOTP. Plus, it did usually feature a new song at times, so it's probably just continuing that tradition. I'd imagine the live acts will (usually be) mainly acts that appeal to 20 somethings onwards.

I'm not sure about Steve Wright continuing as presenter. I know he did the show for many years (and it still gets shown on UKTV Gold 2 with him) but perhaps a fresh start with a new presenter would have been a good idea. It sounds like they're just picking up where they left off. I've nothing against Steve Wright, but a fresh start may have been a good idea.

  14. the main thing I remember about the charts for that following week was someone starting a thread at Dotmusic about Vanessa Carlton spending 4 weeks at #18. That and Sarah Whatmore entering the charts. Well, to be more exact I remember the video, with Sarah Whatmore cavorting on the beach...
  15. Anyone have the next week's top20?

  17. It's also Top 10 in Holland

looking at the Dutch charts on your website, it's one of only 3 songs in that top 10 that I actually recognise! I've never heard of the #1... "als de morgen is gekomen" by jan smit. Is it any good?

  18. Odd it should be released on a Wednesday (5th July)...

it's a rather expensive 12", ten quid! It DOES have the same catalog number as the UK release, but I reckon it was either an import or a very limited release.

  19. Release date is October 23rd.

it's already had an release! Back in July and is released on another format a fortnight today. As both are 12" versions, it will be eligible for another format release, but it can only be on CD single (either maxi or 2 track but not both!), 7" (unlikely) or cassette(very unlikely!).
