#29 - Amazing (featuring Luis Fonsi) From album: Free Me Release year: 2004 Average votes: 7,11 kkenDOV_ju8 Well before the summer hit Despacito (featuring Daddy Yankee) took over the world's charts and cultural impact in 2017, Luis Fonsi was already a very successful Latin American artist from Puerto Rico. His music and profile certainly fitted what Emma was doing with her latino-inspired sound of her Free Me album. When Free Me was released, however, critics and fans in the West alike wondered who the hell this random, unknown act was. The song is usually the most 'forgotten' of the album, but it does fit in well sonically. Whilst the pair did seem odd at the time, they do sound gorgeous together, their voices blend really well in it and the song is a pastiche of 60's jazz-latino bossa nova vibes which suits them well. Funnily enough, Emma did eventually admited that she had never even met Luis as their takes were recorded separately back then. When his profile blew up across the world, some publications like NME and Daily Mail (not linking, sorry!) even wrote about the songs! Sadly, the song was not available on streaming back then to warrent it catching any further streams from this exposure :unsure:

TBH 3 months is f*** all which is why nowadays you have almost a whole year off if you have a new baby... So good for her to stick to least effort possible

Yes I think she probably felt a bit shy about her body image right after giving birth, like any woman would do. The press and public were relenteless on this type of crap back in the day (and still havent changed that much to be hones!) Agree about Word Up being the best Spice-related cover. It's a great take on it and does something new with the original, which is the opposite of what the Spices usually do. I think it is definitely Top5 solo Spice for me. The reasons why it flopped were vast. The promo wasnt great for it, but also the 'dark Spice' vibe was not something people were very used to at the time either. It probably just felt too dark for many people... I love it though!

This bittersweet era gave us some of Bunton's highest highs but also some of her lowest, lets be honest... Tauted as 'the Christmas single that got away', everyone kind of expected Emma to release this when it became clear she was going for the Christmas market appeal, though sadly she chose to go with the maligned remix of We're Not Gonna Sleep Tonight instead and killed her solo music momentum :blink: Written by Emma with iconic producers Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers (of Boyzone fame!), this is Emma's first big attempt at a big ballad and it screams 'single' big time. It was met with good reviews overall at the time of the album's release, mentioned by various publications as a stand out track. Emma performed it various time during the album's promo cycle (even mentioning it as a 'Christmasy-song' during some appearances. It certainly seemed like a sure fire single that built on the pop-acoustic sounds of the first few singles. Alas, it was not meant to be. I totally get the argument that they needed to showcase another side to the album outside of its guitar-pop image that What Took You So Long and Take My Breath Away showed. But they could have gone with a sound that was closer to the actual album's varied sounds rather than what this ended up being... Anyway, it was Bunton's first big mistake, sadly... It really derailed her career...

It is one of the better received covers of the album overall, with their voices blending in together beautifully. The production, whilst muted, is very generous to the song as well. The song was originally released as the debut single from iconic British music legend Dusty Springfield in 1964. Sorry to say but I genuinely have started to wish her solo projects - including this potential TV show and Rosie Frost future books and film - fail. I do not wish her wrong, but she has been actively blocking any Spice-projects that don't prevent her from doing her other stuff in the slightest. So if she is willing to damage the group for that, then I wish her no luck in her other ventures at all.

Do you think Emma should have released Don't Call Me Baby as a single back in 2019? She seemed to hint at it being a favourite... And would have High On Love succeed as a single to save the album back in 2001/2002??

A fun, sexy though quite quirky track about banging ( :teresa: ) it is a retro type of track that takes us right back to the 60s motown sound. It includes gorgeous production by Cathy herself (who also provided backing vocals!), with those hand-claps and the piano blending in super nicely! Emma sounds gorgeous in it as well and I could see it being really fun live! Hopefully she will one day revive it :teresa: What do you think? The original by Maddison Avenue was a huge hit in the late 90s/early 2000s and Emma has often referenced it as a song she wished she had done as it fitted well with her BabySpice persona. Whilst not technically a single from the album, the song was performed live on BBCRadio 2 as part of the promo campaign (see blow). It is also one of the few covers she has done where the production kind of takes the song into a different areas/genre from the original, making it more retro-sounding and in tune with Emma's sound. This is where Emma succeeds in her covers, whereas the ones where it is mostly a carbon copy of the original, usually don't really gel with Emma's audience. fJxKCkOiJL8

I do believe it. Geri is out-out of the Spice Girls right now, and has been for a while, and we know that she has been blocking a few projects since 2019 tour ended. The issue I am having here is not even refusing to go on tour, but she is actively damaging the group as a whole by blocking projects that she would have minimal involvement in. It's f***ing sad.

Yes releasing during the Christmas period was crazy, she should have just waited for the new year. STILL at the time, we cannot know if she would have faired any better, since solo Spice-projects were not supported at all and mostly failed to sell (as you just proved). It probably did help that it was during Christmas and targetted at mums and grannies who watched Strictly as it might have gotten a few more thousand sales than it would have otherwise... I am not sure comparing it to Geri's or Mel C's albums of the same time, both of which flopped without much mainstream support, is worth it though. Emma had the BBC, Children in Need and a major labor backig it and still flopped...
