The on air/on sale release is essentially the singles chart i grew up with (the late but i assume all of the) 80's to EARLY 90's - the further back in the 80's the rarer song debuting in the top 10 or higher - there was no such thing as front loading, back then, that created a ridiculously unstable chart in the late 90s,when a majority of the top 10 would frequently all change by the next week.The closest to front loading was Heavy Metal groups who fans so devoted/organised to achieve a high new entry that would never connect with the GP and just as uniquely bomb straight out the chart. My point - despite the lower frequency of HIGH new entries this was NOT a stagnant chart IN ANY PART. Just like suggesting this approach now will make stagnancy in any part the norm is complete OXYMORON because that implies a unexplainable, constant disappearance of new big hit records on the chart. Even though records peaked lower with more stability, there was still also movement, the continual flow + exchange as singles reached the peak from the positive feedback of promotion/position but unlike the unbelievable ENDLESS "DESERT of new hits" over the past few weeks, new hits would regularly rise/take off leaping quickly at first as they move to the top in a wave of succession - like with the usual (ie not last few weeks) Sunday digital new releases progressing up iTunes but played out over weeks rather than hours/a couple of days. Exactly, as with your previous (+ Mr.Blobs related)posts, plenty of illustration/proof that Gaga is still the phenomenon she was REGARDLESS of chart position which after all has a lot to do with luck not just the songs appeal (classic eg. Westlife would never have ANYWHERE NEAR so many #1s if they didn't insidiously manipulate events to increase their luck so MUCH) - no typical "difficult"/mass popularity slide 2nd/3rd album for her i think. In fact i'd say her fan base has increased in size since the (Fame)monster period/Bad Romance - none of her previous mega smashes debuted at the top with such big number 100K+ for the week did they - they all climbed from the previous week? - naturally the longer she keeps having initial huge success the more people will become more interested/invest more of their time in her/become ardent fans. I thought Youtube/Web in general was the important promo for pop videos now - it gets greater audience compared to the sum of the minor digital channels that show vids(for the Uk at least)does it not? Would you have i expected it to have ANY effect whatsoever in the UK so far - since it has had none ? Also importantly the vid reaction is decidely MIXED EVEN from fans themselves - her old dancer working on this vid, Brian Friedman(sp), was hyping Britney to be back to her pre -chronic mental ilnness/medicated('In the Zone/GH') self when in facts it was TOTAL DECEIT she is just as lifeless as ever(obviously not a surprise with my knowledge) - a lot of stans can't even delude themselves anymore such was the expectation + won't support the "OLD Elvis" Brit, add to the fact shes obviously isn't going to do any other promo (despite previous inferences) given this is claimed to be merely a contractual last album before she retires means even some of the most dumbest of Britards are realising she is a completely diffrent person + star to the one they originaly supported + dumping her :o.

IMO it all depends on whether the general music buying public have been exposed to BTW enough for them to like it. If the (web based etc) hype its had already hasn't been enough real life exposure i agree with your point however you will know if it doesn't connect to the public to anywhere near the degree of previous a Gaga smashes, if it gets full 'conventional' exposure (significant amount of one or more: radio, vid ,other promo -performances interviews in media /performances on TV etc) and it STILL BOMBs down the chart regardless as if all that promotion hadn't happened ie like with Britney's (relative catastrophic (worldwide) flop) HIAM - EVEN the new Avril L. trk has infinitely more stability WW despite not reaching the initial couple days high download peaks of HIAM - notably so far Gaga is having much more stability WW with first week download peaks of BTW than HIAM did - but what else would you expect when you RAPE your fan base senseless of cash + dignity (even if they are too blind to see it for themselves)by doing a phoned in performance with all the spirit + animation of a zombie on a full scale premium priced WW Tour? :blush:

I'm not sure if that is anything remarkable these days esp. given the nature of the digital chart era itself - ie post album release singles are available to buy as soon as the album is released so can enter/climb high(of which an additional physical version release is going like the dodo) in the chart as soon as any sort of suitable promo begins whether that be conventional vid/airplay or 'unconventional' eg featured on a popular tv ad. Its clear from previous reformed TT post album release single runs that physicals are (progressively) invisible (esp. cf. sales of lead + album) but i guess "mundane lived housewives" (obviously not just a literal term but a figurative reference too :blush: ) have to leave nostalgia behind to get on with real life eventually ;)
