  4. Just Released: Luminate’s 2024 Year-End Music Report. You can view it (and download it) at https://luminatedata.com/ Click on button to go to https://luminatedata.com/reports/yearend-mu...ry-report-2024/ It has 90 pages of statistics and analysis. That will keep you occupied for the next week. Taylor Swift gets 18 mentions (lots of sales figures for her albums). Music is the No. 1 leisure activity in the U.S. with 75% of consumers counted as music listeners. Nearly 1 in every 17 U.S. Rock ODA (on-demand audio) streams was either Noah Kahan, Hozier, Linkin Park, the Beatles, or Fleetwood Mac. Some sample tables to peruse. All data copyright Luminate.
  5. 23. The Beatles - Now And Then Why has this track re-surfaced?
  6. It is actually triple counting. Alan Jones mentioned Eleanor Rigby in his analysis last week, as an example. "The crossover between tracks on The Beatles 1973 compilations – 1962-1966 and 1967-1970 – and 2000’s 1 plays havoc with chart placings and consumption figures for all. That is because OCC chart regulations state that the hits title with the greatest sales DUS on a given week is credited with all of the sales-equivalent streams for shared tracks. That means that when, for example, 1 sells better it gets all the compilation streams for Eleanor Rigby regardless of whether the listener was playing it from that or 1962-1966. This week, 1962-1966 and 1967-1970 sold better than 1, and therefore are resurgent, with the former a re-entry at No.59 (2,299 sales), and the latter jumping 156-42 (2,733 sales), while 1 – which was No.55 last week – now exits the Top 200. This rule, of course, applies equally to all artists, not just The Beatles, but the Fab Four suffer from it more than most, especially since the 2023 re-promotion of 1962-1966 and 1967-1970, with the latter, for instance, suffering 46-153, 59-166, 61-167 and 65-156 slides in the latter half of 2024 alone." Eleanor Rigby - track - Platinum Revolver - parent album - Platinum 2x Either 1 - Greatest Hits - Platinum 13x Or Beatles 1962-1966 - Platinum 3x So streams contribute three times for these BPI certs.

  9. BBC Radio 2 listeners were asked to choose between classics such as “Always On My Mind”, “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and “Suspicious Minds” as they voted for the UK’s favourite Elvis Presley song. Great quote in this article. "At present, the UK singles charts resemble an empty carousel, spinning in an abandoned theme park in the dead of night, only performing its rudimentary function because someone forgot to unplug it after everybody went home." My English teacher would be pleased with that sentence.

Now that The Beatles 1967-1970 has returned to the OCC UK Top 100 chart (no. 54 this week) is it still within the Top 100 YTD listing? Do you have an estimate of it's total sales since 1994 (the OCC era)?

Brandon Flowers wrote the words to Mr Brightside at the end of his first serious relationship, when he was about 19 or 20. Back in 2009, he explained to Q Magazine that he discovered his girlfriend was cheating on him in a Las Vegas bar. Comin' out of my cage and I've been doin' just fine Gotta, gotta be down because I want it all It started out with a kiss, how did it end up like this? It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss Now I'm falling asleep and she's calling a cab While he's having a smoke and she's taking a drag Now they're goin' to bed and my stomach is sick And it's all in my head, but she's touching his [Pre-Chorus] Chest now He takes off her dress now Let me go And I just can't look, it's killing me They're taking control [Chorus] Jealousy Turning saints into the sea Swimming through sick lullabies Choking on your alibi But it's just the price I pay Destiny is calling me Open up my eager eyes 'Cause I'm Mr. Brightside
