From Music week The international recording industry trade body IFPI has named Taylor Swift as the world’s best-selling recording artist of 2019. IFPI Top 10 Global Recording Artists of 2019 1. The Beatles LINK: click The IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award and top 10 chart is the only ranking to accurately measure consumption across all formats (including streaming channels, digital and physical album and singles sales) and all countries. It is weighted based on the relative value of each method of consumption. "The ‘top ten’ showcases some of the brightest and most talented artists from around the world, from newer stars, such as Billie Eilish and BTS, to legacy acts like The Beatles and Queen. This range demonstrates how people’s love of music can be continually ignited by new and diverse artists and yet endures across decades."
  2. This article on the OCC web site 9/12/15 gave sales of 989,000. By 19/9/17 pure sales were 991,563. Not yet a million seller on 14/6/18 when 4 more songs were added to bring total to 175. By 16/12/18 it was finally listed as a million seller. Mr Brightside was also added to bring total up to 177. With Iris that total is now 178. Don't think there was any Frank Sinatra specific announcement.
  3. On 19/9/17 it had sold 754,754 pure sales and 2,121,706 streaming sales, or 2,876,460 combined sales. By 11/12/19 it had combined sales of 4.5m.
  4. The OCC list on 19/9/17 gave the following titles as just short of a million SALES. SEXY AND I KNOW IT LMFAO 5 - 999,080 GRENADE BRUNO MARS 1 - 997,862 NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP RICK ASTLEY 1 - 997,005 PARADISE COLDPLAY 1 - 995,808 MY WAY FRANK SINATRA 5 - 991,563 HELP THE BEATLES 1 - 987,769 DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER OASIS 1 - 987,063 IRIS GOO GOO DOLLS 3 - 975,953 MR BRIGHTSIDE KILLERS 10 - 967,180 Of those titles only the Beatles Help is still short of a million UK sales, but it has surpassed one million when streams are added on.
  5. From the OCC 14/2/20 The best-selling singles of all time on the Official UK Chart Every million-selling song in the UK counted down. They're the very top of the pops – the UK's million-selling singles, the tracks that have achieved one million paid-for sales, whether they be physical singles or downloads. It's still a relatively rare feat, with currently only 178 songs making it to seven figures. [No streams] Not all of them managed to make it to Number 1 – 28 million-sellers never hit the top spot – but they've earned their place in British pop history. Way out in front, with 4.93 million sales is Elton John's double-A Candle in the Wind 97/Something About the Way You Look Tonight, released after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. Another charity record is in second, the original Band Aid with Do They Know It's Christmas? on 3.8 million, and the next five songs have all sold over two million copies. 6. Apparently he's been banned.
  7. Thanks. I appreciate all his hard work over the years.
  8. But why was he banned? What did he do wrong?
  9. Do you have post-1994 (OCC era) sales estimates for these Beatles albums? Sgt. Pepper 1967-1970 Abbey Road I am interested to know whether any of these albums is close to being re-certified by BPI soon. Thanks.
  10. Below Top 10 Should Beatles Abbey Road on 119,200 be included?
  11. Any estimate for pre-1994 sales? Reached no. 9 in 1973 with 14 weeks in Top 75. Perhaps 40k?

From Music Week The Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) has issued its UK consumer spending figures for 2019. And while physical music and downloads are down again, streaming is surging ahead with strong year-on-year growth in subscription services. The headline figure is £1 billion – that’s how much UK consumers spent on music streaming services in 2019 (£1.002.9bn to be precise). The year-on-year increase in streaming spending was 23.5%. The performance of subscription services including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music and Deezer helped total UK consumer spending on music reach £1.41bn, a year-on-year increase of 7.1%. It’s a result in line with the BPI’s latest figures for 2019. ERA has divided the music retail sector between access (ie streaming) and ownership (physical and downloads), with a split of 71.1% and 28.9%. According to the BPI’s unit measurements for 2019, streaming accounts for 74.4% of consumption. Based on preliminary data compiled by ERA, the streaming spend is four times the total of five years ago. That’s helped the music sector record its fifth successive year of growth. ERA CEO Kim Bayley said: “The rise of digital entertainment services has created the biggest revolution in UK leisure habits in history, enabling people to access the music, video and games they love wherever and whenever they want, and transforming the fortunes of record labels, filmmakers and games developers. The fact that in 2019 over 80% of entertainment spending was on digital services shows the scale of that revolution.” That result is contrasted by a continued decline in physical music, which is down 17% year-on-year to £318.1m. For the decade as a whole, spending on physical music is down 63.5%. The rise of vinyl continues – up 6.4% year-on-year to £97.1 million. While BPI unit stats have vinyl accounting for one in eight album sales in 2019, in retail value terms it’s more like a third (30.8%). Last year HMV significantly expanded its vinyl offer. The strength of vinyl in proportional sales terms is partly down to the decline in CD sales, which fell by 24.7% in retail value last year (£216.99m) – less than the unit decline of 26.5%, which suggests prices of deluxe editions are holding up. Cassette sales are growing but remain niche: ERA’s ‘other physical albums’ spending total is £1.14m. Downloads are the real losers from the switch in consumption. Some music consumers clearly still prefer the ownership model, though downloaders are converting to subscription streaming. Consumer spending on digital albums was down 27.5% year-on-year to £53.2m. Despite falls in sales of physical music, video and games formats, strong demand for digital services was sufficient to produce overall entertainment market growth of 2.4% to £7.8bn, its seventh consecutive year of growth. “There is no doubt retailers of physical product had a tough time in 2019,” said Bayley. “But physical entertainment was still a £1.4bn retail business. Sales of vinyl and 4K Ultra HD discs are buoyant and still growing and we still have huge hit phenomena like FIFA 20 which can sell 1.5m physical units at around £40 a time. Physical is down, but it’s definitely not out.” The year’s biggest-selling album was Lewis Capaldi’s Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent (EMI), which moved 641,000 units across all formats. Bayley added: “As more and more people sign up to streaming services, it obviously becomes a challenge to maintain the same rate of growth, but the fact is UK music fans spent £190m more on subscription streaming services in 2019 than they did the year before – that’s more than twice the value of the entire vinyl market.” Digital video sales grew by 21.5% to £2.11bn, while physical revenues decreased 22.7% to £500m. The biggest video hit of 2019 was the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody with 1.7m copies sold, two thirds of them on physical formats. Games remains entertainment’s biggest sector, but after years of growth in 2019 it shrunk by 3.4% to £3.77bn - its first year without growth since 2012. ERA blamed the decline on a slowdown in sales ahead of the expected launch in late 2020 of the new PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

UK recorded music market up 7.5%, hits 114 billion streams in 2019 From Music Week The UK recorded music market has just had its fifth consecutive year of growth. According to the BPI and Official Charts Company data, consumption across all formats was up 7.5% year-on-year for volume in 2019. Based on the year’s AES total, the equivalent of 153.5 million albums were either streamed or purchased in the last 12 months. The annual rate of increase is up on the 5.7% recorded in 2018. Streaming equivalent albums (SEA) increased by 26% year-on-year to 114.2m units, 74.4% of the AES total (the industry metric used to measure sales and streams on a comparable basis). December saw the highest weekly total of streams – 2.7 billion – ever recorded, and the 2019 total of 114 billion plays on audio streaming services marks the first time the 100 billion landmark has been surpassed in a year. In contrast to the streaming result, physical sales were down 22.8% year-on-year and now account for less than 20% (18.2%) of the total. CDs slumped by 26.5% year-on-year to 23.5m units, although the value of boxsets will likely soften the blow. Digital albums were down 28.2% to 7.3m units, as the industry faces up to a future in which downloads are likely to be a niche business. Digital albums now account for 4.8% of the total, compared to 21.1%in 2015. Vinyl LP sales rose for a 12th consecutive year, with Liam Gallagher’s Why Me? Why Not the most in-demand title, selling over 29,000copies. The top 10 included new album releases by Billie Eilish and Lewis Capaldi, alongside catalogue classics such as Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures and Queen’s Greatest Hits. Vinyl LPs now account for one in every eight albums bought, with 4.3m purchased in 2019 – up 4.1% on the previous year and a rise of over 2,000% on the format’s low point in 2007.

  16. I assume these are pure sales only without streams added? EDIT: Just noticed the OCC reply, All time lists will differ depending on context. Consistently, any list focusing on sales only will be marked as 'bestselling', while all-time charts that include streaming are 'biggest'. Hope this clarification helps.

From Music Week Official Charts Company adds streaming 'sales' to compilations chart There’s been a shake-up on the compilations chart. The Official Charts Company has changed the rules so that streaming data will count towards sales for compilations featuring original material. The rule change is set to have a significant impact on the chart and sales totals. The Frozen 2 soundtrack (UMC/Walt Disney) climbed 7-2 on the compilations chart on Friday (November 29). The album has weekly sales of 12,041 (38.6% from streams), according to the Official Charts Company. “The scale of consumption will be fully reflected, as the Official Charts Company changed the rules governing the compilation chart to also include streams where tracks constitute new, previously unreleased material,” said an Official Charts Company spokesperson. Other beneficiaries this week include the original Frozen soundtrack, the Children In Need Got It Covered album (Silva Screen) and the Top Boy (Warner Music) soundtrack. The compilation inspired by the Netflix series has made an impact with Dave’s track Professor X (228,969 sales), streams for which have been registered for the singles chart. But now streams for the digital-only album also count towards the compilation chart. The previous rule depressed sales figures for albums that had heavy streaming consumption, such as The Greatest Showman Reimagined. However, the change will not include compilations such as the Now series, which do not feature original songs. Now’s co-MD Peter Duckworth has previously spoken to Music Week about how the absence of streaming ‘sales’ has made a 100,000 weekly total more difficult. Now That’s What I Call Music recently reported that revenues were down in what has become a challenging physical compilations market. Compilation album sales are down 35% year-on-year so far in 2019.

  20. Now corrected on OCC web site. Adele's triology of albums have a combined total of 11.17 million chart sales, including 5.16 million for 21. The record is the UK's best-selling album of all-time by a solo artist, certified 17x Platinum. So 11.17 - 5.16 - 3.56 = 2.45m for 19. Also, from Music week, Adele’s 21 (XL Recordings) has sales of 5,162,672, according to the Official Charts Company.
