  1. OCC 01 May 2018 The UK's most streamed songs in 2017 by year of release With streaming now firmly established in music – accounting for over half of music consumption in the UK – it’s not just new songs that are racking up millions of plays, many classics are now finding a sizeable audience. Tracks released before 2016 (what can loosely be defined as ‘catalogue’ songs) made up 55% of music streaming in 2017, despite the Top 10 most played tracks of the year all being released in 2017. The seasonal appeal of Christmas classics are the obvious choice for popular catalogue songs on streaming, and last year saw Wham’s Last Christmas become the most popular song on streaming released in the 1980s with 24 million plays in 2017, closely followed by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl’s Fairytale Of New York on 20.5m. Behind the festive favourites, not completely unsurprisingly, is Toto’s Africa, which notched up just under 18m plays in the UK last year. The soft rock classic, released in 1982, has found a new audience in the streaming era thanks in part to nostalgic Millennials revisiting the song as well as countless memes and essays about the song online. The same goes for Earth Wind & Fire's September, which also featured in the hit film Trolls and was the most popular single of the 1970s last year with 17.5m streams. More surprising is Train’s Hey Soul Sister, which was the most streamed track of 2017 released in 2009, with 11.7 million plays. The folk-pop number was a huge radio hit but only a moderate UK chart success at the time, peaking at Number 18 on the Official Singles Chart in 2010 and finishing as the 84th best-seller of that year. Meanwhile, the most streamed track of the 1990s last year was Oasis’ 1995 hit Wonderwall with just over 27m plays, narrowly beating Mariah Carey’s 1994 yuletide favourite All I Want For Christmas Is You with 26m streams. Elsewhere, the enduring appeal of The Killers’ Mr Brightside makes 2003 the golden song of the Noughties, acquiring 42m plays in 2017 alone, while The Jackson 5’s 1969 single I Want You Back was the most popular track of the 1960s last year. Take a look at the complete list of the most streamed songs of 2017 by year of release below, compiled by the BPI using Official Charts Company data: YEAR TITLE ARTIST 2017 SHAPE OF YOU - ED SHEERAN 2016 YOU DON'T KNOW ME - JAX JONES FT RAYE 2015 BE THE ONE - DUA LIPA 2014 ONE LAST TIME - ARIANA GRANDE 2013 POMPEII - BASTILLE 2012 RADIOACTIVE - IMAGINE DRAGONS 2011 THE A TEAM - ED SHEERAN 2010 WHAT YOU KNOW - TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB 2009 HEY SOUL SISTER - TRAIN 2008 VIVA LA VIDA - COLDPLAY 2007 FLOURESCENT ADOLESCENT - ARCTIC MONKEYS 2006 NAÏVE - THE KOOKS 2005 GOLD DIGGER - KANYE WEST FT JAMIE FOXX 2004 NUMB/ENCORE - JAY-Z & LINKIN PARK 2003 MR BRIGHTSIDE - THE KILLERS 2002 IGNITION REMIX - R KELLY 2001 LAST NITE - STROKES 2000 IN THE END - LINKIN PARK 1999 NO SCRUBS - TLC 1998 IRIS - GOO GOO DOLLS 1997 BITTER SWEET SYMPHONY - VERVE 1996 NO DIGGITY - BLACKSTREET FT DR DRE 1995 WONDERWALL - OASIS 1994 ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU - MARIAH CAREY 1993 LAID - JAMES 1992 CREEP - RADIOHEAD 1991 SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT - NIRVANA 1990 THUNDERSTRICK - AC/DC 1989 I WANNA BE ADORED - STONE ROSES 1988 FAST CAR - TRACY CHAPMAN 1987 FAIRTYALE OF NEW YORK - THE POGUES FT KIRSTY MACCOLL 1986 YOU CAN CALL ME AL - PAUL SIMON 1985 MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE - SHAKIN' STEVENS 1984 LAST CHRISTMAS - WHAM! 1983 SWEET DREAMS (ARE MADE OF THIS) - EURYTHMICS 1982 AFRICA - TOTO 1981 DON'T STOP BELIVIN' - JOURNEY 1980 MY MAKE MY DREAMS - DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES 1979 HIGHWAY TO HELL - AC/DC 1978 SEPTEMBER - EARTH WIND & FIRE 1977 MR BLUE SKY - ELO 1976 GO YOU OWN WAY - FLEETWOOD MAC 1975 BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY - QUEEN 1974 SWEET HOME ALABAMA - LYNYRD SKYNYRD 1973 STEP INTO CHRISTMAS - ELTON JOHN 1972 SUPERSTITION - STEVIE WONDER 1971 TINY DANCER - ELTON JOHN 1970 SIGNED SEALED DELIVERED (I'M YOURS) - STEVIE WONDER 1969 I WANT YOU BACK - JACKSON 5 1968 ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER - JIMI HENDRIX 1967 AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH - MARVIN GAYE & TAMMI TERRELL 1966 PAINT IT BLACK - ROLLING STONES 1965 I CAN'T HELP MYSELF - FOUR TOPS 1964 MY GIRL - THE TEMPTATIONS 1963 IT'S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR - ANDY WILLIAMS 1962 BRING IT ON HOME TO ME - SAM COOKE 1961 STAND BY ME - BEN E KING 1960 AT LAST - ETTA JAMES ©2018 Official Charts Company. Why is it so difficult to report streaming? Surely Spotify have very sophisticated computers?

HD Vinyl technology HD Vinyl is a massive improvement over traditional vinyl records. It offers better sound, higher frequency response, 30% more playing time, and 30% more amplitude than current vinyl records. It also eliminates the toxic chemicals currently used in the vinyl mastering process, while completely removing tangential/radial error. For manufacturers, there’s also no quality gap between the first and last copy produced (no stamper wear). 100% backward compatibility HD Vinyl records can be played back on any existing turntable, while still delivering major fidelity improvements. Perfect groove technology HD Vinyl perfectly matches the intended shape of the analog groove, regardless of whether it’s the first or last copy manufactured from the stamper set. That allows needle manufacturers to create needles that perfectly fit into HD Vinyl’s laser-inscribed grooves. Should be available by mid 2019. Read more here.

From the OCC. Adele: 33 chart facts to celebrate ten years since the release of her debut album 19 To mark the 10th anniversary of her debut album, OfficialCharts.com presents a host of chart facts on a decade of Adele. 30/1/18 10 years ago saw the birth of a superstar, as 19-year-old Adele Adkins saw her debut album 19 go straight in at Number 1. Since then, the only way has been up for the London-born star, with all manner of chart accolades, feats and records to her name. To celebrate the last decade of Adele, some need-to-know facts about her chart career. Take a look at Adele's UK hit singles and albums in her archive. 1. Adele's first UK hit single was Chasing Pavements, which entered the chart at Number 2 in January 2008. She was held off Number 1 by Basshunter's Now You're Gone. Imagine! 2. In its first week, 19 sold 73,341 copies, its biggest sales week – although it came close to topping it over three years later when the follow-up 21 was released. 3. In its year of release, 19 was merely the 16th biggest seller of the year. In 2011, it was fourth. 4. 19 has sold over 2.35 million, despite spending just one week at Number 1. 5. Chasing Pavements was the first of 13 Top 40 singles for Adele – eight have gone Top 10. 6. It would be February 2011 before Adele would score her first Number 1 single. Following an emotional performance at the BRIT Awards, Someone Like You zoomed to the top of the charts, just five weeks after Adele had released previous single Rolling in the Deep. 7. Adele has three million-selling singles in the UK, behind only the Beatles and Rihanna who have six and four respectively. They are Someone Like You, Rolling in the Deep, and Make You Feel My Love. Check out the UK's best-selling singles of all time in full here. 8. Make You Feel My Love the last single off 19 and achieved moderate success on original release. It regained popularity thanks to being a popular choice by auditionees on The X Factor, propelling it to Number 4 in 2010, two years after its release. The song was written and originally performed by Bob Dylan and has been covered by many artists. Only Adele's version charted, though. 9. Adele's sophomore effort 21 was released in January 2011 and went straight in at Number 1 with 208,000 sales. 10. 21's biggest sales in one week came nine weeks later, shifting over 257,000 copies in seven days. 11. 21 took six weeks to hit one million sales, 13 weeks to hit two million, 33 weeks to hit three million, and 57 weeks to hit four million. 12. 21's current sales – excluding streams – stand at 4.97 million. 13. 21 has spent 23 weeks at Number 1 – the very first 11 of those being consecutive. (It would've been 17 but Foo Fighters' Chasing Light interrupted her run.) 14. 21 was the longest-running Number 1 album for 45 years, spending the most time at the summit since Simon and Garfunkel’s 33-week chart topper Bridge Over Troubled Water in 1970. 15. 21 didn't leave the Top 3 for its first eight months of release. 16. 21 was the biggest selling album of 2011. In fact, it's the biggest selling album of the 21st century so far. 17. In 2012, it was revealed by Official Charts that a copy of Adele's 21 or 19 had been sold every 7 seconds in the UK. Blimey. 18. Still on 21 – stay with us – it's the fourth best-selling album of all time. Ever. Only Queen's Greatest Hits, The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Abba's Gold have sold more in the UK. Adele is the only solo female artist in the all-time Top 10. Check out the full list here. 19. 21 was, in fact, the biggest selling album in the world for two years running. It sold 18 million in 2011 and 8.3 million the following year. 20. In 2012, Adele recorded the theme tune to James Bond movie Skyfall, peaking at Number 2. It was beaten to the top by Swedish House Mafia's Don't You Worry Child. At the time Skyfall equalled Duran Duran's A View to a Kill as highest charting Bond theme – Sam Smith's The Writing's on the Wall would go on to break this record. 21. In 2015, after a longish break, having a baby and, apparently, ditching an entire album's worth of material, Adele returned! New single Hello became her second Official Singles Chart Number 1 22. Hello scored first-week sales of 333,000 and spent three weeks at the top. Hello also broke a first-week streaming record of the time, with 7.32 million listens 23. Hello's parent album 25 went straight in at the top in December 2015 and became the fastest-selling album of all time, shifting 800,307 copies in its first chart week. This beat a previous record by Oasis, who'd sold 695,761 copies of Be Here Now in its first chart week, despite being on sale for only three days. While Oasis did sell 813,000 in their first seven days of sales, it's chart eligibility weeks that count toward the record books, giving Adele the accolade. 24. 25 was the biggest-selling album of 2015 after just a month on sale – 2.5 million sold that year. 25. 25 was also the biggest seller of 2016! 26. 25 was the fastest album to sell a million copies, hitting the milestone after 10 days. 27. It was also the fastest to two million – 29 days. 28. And, yes, you've guessed it, 25 was the fastest to reach three million too, in just seven months. 29. 25 spent 13 weeks at Number 1, the first seven being consecutive. It hit the top on four separate occasions. 30. 25 spawned three Top 10 singles – Hello (1), When We Were Young (9), and Send My Love (To Your New Lover), which peaked at Number 5. 31. 25 stayed in the Top 40 for 80 straight weeks. 32. 25's sales now stand at 3.32 million copies. 33. In total, since her debut, Adele has spent just over a year in the Official Singles Chart Top 10, clocking up 53 weeks. She's spent over three years in the Official Albums Chart Top 10 – with 167 weeks under her belt.

From Music Week 'We've reached the tipping point': BPI's Geoff Taylor talks soaring streaming numbers by Andre Paine January 10th 2018 at 6:00AM The music industry has been toasting its success in the past 12 months, following the recent market figures for 2017 published by the BPI and ERA. In the latest issue of Music Week, we dig into the data and look ahead to how the biz can consolidate those streaming results in 2018. Here’s more from Geoff Taylor, chief executive BPI and Brit Awards, on his take on the labels’ performance and the third year of growth… Has streaming officially become the future of the business? Yes, clearly we’ve reached the tipping point where the majority of music consumption is streaming. But I think what’s most encouraging is that the rate of growth – still growing at more than 50% a year – shows that we’re some way from it having plateaued. I think there are a lot of people who still haven’t experienced music streaming. We take for granted in metropolitan centres like London that everybody knows what Spotify is. Actually there’s still plenty of room for growth and I think more and more older consumers will get involved in streaming – that shows there’s a lot of potential value still to be realised for the industry. At the same time, I think the resilience of physical formats shows a very healthy picture, so we look forward with a lot of optimism. Are there signs streaming growth has peaked? It would be ambitious to expect that the rate of growth remained as high, it would be normal for that to gradually reduce. We have every reason to hope that if we continue to release great music, and continue to innovate in the streaming experience, then there’s a lot of potential still to grow. How important was a strong release schedule last year? I think what was encouraging in 2017 were the breakthroughs. In particular, Stormzy, Dua Lipa, Rag’N’Bone man, J Hus, these were all proper British breakthroughs and you see some of those artists like Dua Lipa going on to international success as well. So I think the conveyor belt of talent, and the jobs that the labels are doing in identifying and marketing talent, is clearly firing on all cylinders. It needs to be because when you look at the strength of the international competition, there’s some great music coming out of the US. Is the CD here to stay? CD has its role, there are lots of consumers for whom it’s still really convenient, that’s the way they access music in their car. We’ll continue to see it drop off but everyone’s been surprised, I think, by how long it’s remained around, it’s a great format, and the increases in vinyl clearly mean physical overall is performing better than most people would have expected. What about downloads? It’s understandable that for most people who are going into digital music now, streaming is the more logical way forward than buying downloads. So we can expect that dynamic to continue, but I don’t think Apple are likely to turn off downloads imminently and they still have a role to play in the market. The great news for consumers is that, whichever way you want your music, you can get it. There’s never been more music available so easily, so it’s a great time to be a music fan. Our job at the labels is just to make sure that there’s fantastic British music out there, and that’s why I’m so encouraged that 2017 has been a good year What are the challenges for 2018? The big issue for this year is integration with voice, so smart speakers – we need to make sure that British artists still get their share in a curated environment. That’s already true on streaming, it will be more true as more people access their music through smart speakers. So we need to make sure that that isn’t a bottleneck that works to the advantage only of the biggest global superstars, but that emerging artists also can feature and people can discover in the same way through voice assistants as they currently can do on screen. That’s one of the challenges for us that everybody is working hard on.

  16. The OCC has published its list of 170 UK million sellers (i.e. no streams included). 19 December 2017 The UK's biggest selling singles of all time By Justin Myers They're the very top of the pops – the UK's million-selling singles. It's still a relatively rare feat, with currently only 170 songs making it to seven figures. Not all of them managed to make it to Number 1 – 27 million-sellers never hit the top spot – but they've earned their place in British pop history. Way out in front, with 4.93 million sales is Elton John's double-A Candle in the Wind 97/Something About the Way You Look Tonight, released after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. Another charity record is in second, the original Band Aid with Do They Know It's Christmas? on 3.8 million, and the next five songs have all sold over two million copies. The biggest selling cover version is Boney M's Rivers of Babylon/Brown Girl in the Ring from 1978, shifting 2.03 million, although the originals never charted – the most popular cover version of a song that had already charted is Wet Wet Wet's redo of the Troggs' Love Is All Around, on 1.9 million. The top selling song released in the 21st century goes to Pharrell Williams' Happy, which is ninth with 1.9 million sales, while Cher's Believe is the bestselling song by a female artist, 16th in the rundown, with 1.83 million. Just behind Cher is the top selling song never to reach Number 1 – Wham!'s Last Christmas, which was blocked by Band Aid in 1984 and has sold 1.82 million, while Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Relax claims the bestselling debut single by a group (2.06m) and Will Young takes the prize for a solo artist with Evergreen (1.78m) Some stars are just greedy and bag more than one million-seller: 20 artists have two or more entries in the list of the UK's all-time bestselling singles. Way out in front, with an astonishing six, are the Beatles, with their top-selling honour going to 1963 chart-topper She Loves You, on 1.92 million. Rihanna is up next – she appears on four, with We Found Love (feat Calvin Harris) her biggest, shifting 1.41 million copies. Adele and Pharrell Williams have three million-sellers each – Someone Like You from 2011 is Adele's big one (1.64m) and Pharrell's is Happy. * Sales for White Christmas have only been counted since the inception of the chart in 1952. The only difference I can see is that no. 101 STARSHIPS by NICKI MINAJ has been relegated to no. 164 in this new list. No explanation is given.

  21. Last night Channel 5 aired Britain’s favourite Christmas hits (based on OCC sales). They played the top 65 songs and gave actual sales figures. Not really a problem. There is lots of free software (such as Audacity) that you can use to record music from a free streaming service. The song can then be saved to your computer and hence moved to a CD. Cost is zero. It may be illegal but .........
  25. And now the Christmas Albums. 08 December 2017 The Official Top 20 biggest selling Christmas albums of the century We count down the top artist festive collections since 2000 – who's top of the tree? By Justin Myers We all have our favourite Christmas songs we return to year after year, but for the hardcore Yuletide nut, only a full Christmas album with fresh renditions of festive standards and new future favourites will do. Few are brave enough to tackle a Christmas album - Sia, Gwen Stefani and Keane's Tom Chaplin are the latest to have a go - but of those that do, who's been filling stockings and soundtracking magic gift-giving moments the most this century? OfficialCharts.com is counting down the top selling festive artists collections of the 21st century, so far… When it comes to Christmas album sales, the star at the very top of the tree is twinkly-eyed crooner Michael Bublé. His seasonal set – entitled Christmas, just so there was no room for doubt – is the ONLY Christmas Number 1 Album in chart history with the word "Christmas" in the title. It spent three non-consecutive weeks at the top on its release in 2011, and has returned to the Top 10 every year since! Christmas has sold a whopping 2.6 million in the UK according to Official Charts Company data, has spent almost six months in the Top 10 in total over the last five years and is the UK's 21st biggest selling album since 2000. Over to another favourite crooner, Rod Stewart takes second place with his 2012 collection Merry Christmas Baby (626,000 sales). Plus, Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without Sir Cliff, and he's up in third with the aptly named Cliff At Christmas (408,000), originally released in 2003. The King of Rock n Roll also fills a spot in the UK's Top 20 best-selling Christmas Albums. Elvis's Christmas Peace takes fifth position (313,000). It may have been released back in 1994, but Mariah Carey's Merry Christmas is still a strong-seller in the 2000s. The album, which includes million-selling All I Want For Christmas is You – is the seventh best-selling festive album since 2000 (216,000 since 2000, 305,000 overall). There are good showings from festive sets by Charlotte Church (12) and Justin Bieber (13) and pop princesses Kylie Minogue and Leona Lewis also make it into the sparkling rundown with their recent seasonal releases – Kylie Christmas and Christmas With Love park their sleighs at 15 and 20 respectively.
