Some happy millionaires. The River Tour by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band was the top grossing tour in the world in 2016. Visiting Europe from May to July last year, the tour stopped off in the UK and Ireland for shows at Manchester’s Etihad Stadium, Hampden Park in Glasgow, Coventry’s Ricoh Arena and London’s Wembley Stadium, along with two nights at Croke Park in Dublin. According to Pollstar’s year-end rankings, a total of 2,406,591 tickets were sold for the tour, which grossed $268.3 million (£217.8m) from 76 shows. The Rolling Stones ($90.9m) were ninth despite playing just 14 shows in 2016. The band sold 743,425 tickets at an average ticket price of $122.33 (£98.45).

  4. U2 are at number 21. The Radio 2 presenter said, We have added together figures from all over the internet. We've looked at record sales, we've looked at music industry publications, we've used available sales figures issued to all the news organisations, we've used albums, we've used singles, we've done videos since the early sixties and we've done a chart. You can take issue with it - it is an art or a science. As Eric Morecambe once said - "The artists are all there, but not necessarily in the correct order."
  5. The top 5. 1 The Beatles 2 Elvis Presley 3 Michael Jackson 4 Elton John 5 Madonna Compiled by radio producer Philip Swern (you can read about him on Wikipedia).

  7. What Radio 2 said today. The 2 compilers (who they named) searched hundreds of web sites to calculate an average of certified and estimated sales of albums and singles as well as digital downloads and videos since the early sixties. Fan sites tend to exaggerate sales. What weighting factor was used for the various components? Were streams included? Videos obviously hurt artists from the 60s and 70s. Which countries were included? As Radio 2 admitted the list is more of an art than a science. You can view the list from here.

  18. Today the OCC says: "Perfect Day spent three non-consecutive weeks at Number 1 and has sold 1.54 million copies - impressive for a song that's not been available to download or stream in the digital era." But the OCC gave a 1.55m figure by May 2012. Has it lost sales? Or just rounding problems?

It's now available in the UK. Music Week Amazon’s new streaming service, Amazon Music Unlimited, is now available in the UK, having been rolled out in the US last month. With its new launch, Amazon is looking to go head-to-head with the likes of Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal in the streaming market, boasting a catalogue of over 40 million songs and, most interestingly, a potentially game-changing price point. While Apple Music and Tidal have looked to exclusive releases and content to chip away at Spotify’s market dominance, neither have been able to break away from the industry-standard £9.99 per month subscription fee. With Amazon Music Unlimited, Amazon Prime members will be able to sign up to the service for just £7.99 per month, while those content with listening to music in the home can enjoy the service through an Amazon Echo speaker for just £3.99 per month. Another key feature of Amazon Music Unlimited is Alexa – its voice control function that allows customer with an Echo speaker to control everything from song selection, volume control, playlists and a whole host more by simply talking to the speaker. Users can ask Alexa to identify a song by saying some of its lyrics out loud, while, if you’re looking for music of a particular mood, you can ask, Alexa, play ‘90s indie, and it’ll immediately play a popular song from the genre and period stated. You can even order taxis and takeaways using the service. With Alexa, customers can also listen to the Side By Side feature, whereby asking, for example, Alexa, play Sting Side By Side, Sting will then offer a commentary either his latest album/single. Side By Sides are currently available from Emeli Sandé, The Chainsmokers, Sting, Two Door Cinema Club, Madness, Norah Jones, The Shires and Michael Buble, with more being added. “We’ve been thrilled with customer reaction to the launch of Amazon Music Unlimited in the US last month and we’re excited to quickly bring the service to customers in the UK,” said Steve Boom, VP Amazon Music. “Starting today, Amazon Music Unlimited offers our UK customers playlists and stations curated by our music experts in the UK, featuring leading British and international artists – we think customers are going to love it.” “Amazon Music Unlimited brings real value to the millions of people in the UK who are already Prime members, with a choice of subscribing for only £7.99 a month or even £79 per year,” added Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO. “And if you want a sense of the future of voice-controlled music, go ahead and ask Alexa for a free Amazon Music Unlimited trial, and play around on your Echo. If you don’t know the name of a song but know a few lyrics, if you want to hear songs from a specific decade, or even if you’re looking for music to match your mood, just ask. Our U.S. customers love Amazon Music Unlimited on Echo, and we think our UK customers will too.”
  20. Why are all these tracks together on iTunes? Never saw that before.

From Music Week Sainsbury’s has announced that it will now sell vinyl records in 67 more stores across the country – taking its total number of vinyl selling stores to 238. Records will now be available permanently in 238 stores and the range will be tripled from 20 to 60 titles. The new collection will launch in-store on October 14 and will include a mix of contemporary and classic records along with seven exclusive titles. The supermarket has made significant in-roads into the physical music market in 2016, now accounting for 80% of the total grocery vinyl market. Sainsbury’s began selling vinyl in March this year for the first time since the 1980s and has sold more than 81,000 records to date, with the best performing album, Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, selling 5,500 units so far. The new collection includes Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here and David Bowie’s Blackstar in addition to limited edition coloured vinyl exclusives such as Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s Welcome to The Pleasure Dome, Madonna’s Like a Prayer and Jethro Tull’s Aqua Lung. From October 21, Sainsbury’s will also be taking an exclusive silver coloured edition of Michael Buble’s new album Nobody But Me. Sean Cowland, Sainsbury’s Music Buyer said: “Following on from the unprecedented success we’ve seen since adding vinyl to our offer in March, we’ve extended the range to give our customers even more choice. We’ve seen incredible sales from timeless classics such as The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Fleetwood Mac, but also a more leftfield selection, like N.WA and The Smiths. By increasing the range, we can offer our customer a larger choice to enjoy in our stores.”
  25. Agreed. It was no. 68 on the all-time list so can't have 2.62m pure sales. OCC said: Hi Gary, that figure is pure sales. It's combined figure including streaming equivalent sales is 2.92 million. So that's 300,000 sales from streaming from January 2015. That seems a lot.
