It always amazes me how well Anywhere does. It has aged wonderfully but still feels mildly rogue somehow. Actually really surprised Espresso is top 2 aswell! Loooove Sabrina but all of her other songs missing top 100 made me assume she wasn’t a huge fave here yet. Whichever song wins will make a great winner but I’m rooting for No Tears Left To Cry by a hair. Physical ❤️ still my favourite song of the decade (though Midnight Sun is probably running that close now) and I’ll never be mad to see it win, but it’s always nice to see new winners so #3 seems fair. Flawless pop song though, no faults.

You can't be scammed by presence and an IT factor, it's either there or it's not - the public aren't endorsing in a scam for 5 decades, they quite simply don't have the time for that. It's the reason the likes of Ava Max, Meghan Trainor etc have faded away after a short burst of momentum because they don't quite possess that factor. The reality is, what makes someone a star to the wider world isn't what is written in their songwriting credits because I highly doubt 99.9% of people know who writes what. A musician can be many different things - they CAN be a songwriter, they CAN be a superb singer, they CAN be a superb dancer. There's no pre-written formula for what makes someone a star but it's undeniable that Kylie Minogue has that and it's not something you can be scammed into feeling. An artist makes you feel something doing whatever they want with their skill or their gift and the fact that Kylie Minogue has managed to maintain such a huge following after almost 40 years of releasing music is an obvious testament to the fact that she makes people feel something. When I saw her live this year, we were seated but stood up the whole time and left the show in the best mood - she exemplifies joy and that feeling of "oh, I just want to dance and forget about everything", she's like if glitter was a person. If a performer of somebody elses writing has the ability to make others FEEL, then she's doing the right job. It's the same for models - you can't say a model isn't talented because somebody designed the clothes that they're wearing down the catwalk. Their job is to sell you the garment and make you believe that what they're wearing is something that you need on your own body. Kylie Minogue is the model in this instance - what she did in the studio is none of my business but does her voice/her delivery/her performance of the songs make me want to indulge in it? Absolutely. Art isn't to be policed by creating parameters of what should and shouldn't make someone a star. Enjoy your art your way and let other people enjoy it theirs.

Cha Cha Cha continuing to outrun Tattoo sorta surprises me, but then the former is definitely the sort of thing more likely to galvanize big points from those who love it, whereas pop fans have more to choose from than Tattoo. Still, a climb for Loreen is fabulous to see.

Nothing bar samxemma really broke through the ceiling and I don't think anything bar Breakaway was considered a contender so I don't feel like it's been a year of highs either, but 9/10 were hits and 8/10 were top 20 so equally not a year of lows. Kept tabs on this while I was working last night and results were all OVER the place. Loved the presentation and was exciting knowing my votes had influence coming right at the end. Big congrats to Dan, had heard it once in advance of the contest and am not surprised at all that it got the win (as predicted on Page 1 xx) - probably quite rare for a Danaeviia/Hendinia vote swap too, so thank you for that, was very surprised! WHAT a comeback from Lentyll aswell - wasn't expecting to like that song as much as I did aswell. Thrilled Taahino managed to grab a top 10 with 3Quency - a continued 100% hit rate for my back-up entries coming top 10 in the last 4 contests (aka since I started having a shortlist and spending more time on new music/BJSC), a funny stat to keep up. And also very very glad XG picked up after a ridiculously slow start. 16th feels strangely low for my entry given how well it did with 3 18s etc, but for that reason, I'm not disappointed. I feel like I often wind up finishing top 15 because plenty of people like my entries but not emphatically enough so they trickle their way to top 20 but this feels very different and I'm glad Alchemy resonated so strongly with 6 people that it reached their medal positions. Thanks to Bronzil, Spodic Empire and Baleghde for that! Excited for a Dan contest next time around as they're always fun and a huge well done to Rich for a very fun contest to end the year, with a really unique style of scoreboard to keep everyone feeling involved from start to finish.
