  1. Due to the strong winds and sunshine across the UK at the moment we are generating over 75% of the national grid demand in the UK from renewables. The UK's wind generation capacity is actually over 30GW so we're not at capacity, the current record of 21.9GW was achieved in December 2023. Not sure how much solar capacity we have but wind is generally king. Also the price per MWh is currently minus £25.. Btw: Coal will officially be switched off forever on 1 October 2024. Ending a run of 142 consecutive years where coal has been used to generate electricity in the UK.
  2. “Strangers When We Meet” was David Bowie's 50th Top 40 single (as announced by Mark Goodier on the chart) and it's one of my favourites <3 Often overlooked because much of his 90s output was quite patchy, but this was so good. There's a sadness and beauty in it that just cannot be beaten for me.

  4. Yes, of course! Not sure how much expertise I'll be able to contribute beyond your own but I'm more than happy to make suggestions. Well if she also covered Smoke City's “Underwater Love” you may enjoy this compilation x
  5. Thanks for your hard work putting these together. Loved both the Rave and Britpop+ comps, as for ideas - have you considered putting together a Trip Hop compilation? I figured with the popularity of Mono's “Life In Mono” in BJSC and being a discovery for many ppl, there'd be some merit in developing one as there are a lot of undiscovered gems out there - not necessarily solely Bristol/UK adjacent - as well as a mix of some big Top 10/20 hits from the 1990s (Sneaker Pimps, Portishead, Massive Attack) and some very recent tracks like Hoodie & James K's “Scorpio” which I loved from last year.

I find it quite sad that the music video is now becoming an irrelevance. Perhaps that is partly because growing up they could play such a vital role in whether a single soared or sunk without a trace, that it is a pang of nostalgia for my childhood and discovering unknown gems whilst scrolling through the music channels in the days before YouTube. Ones I distinctly remember were “Star Guitar” by the Chemical Brothers for its clever use of the objects outside of a train window to match the beat and punctuation of the track, “Frontier Psychiatrist” by Avalanches - a song made entirely of a wide variety of samples made in to a genius town hall amateur dramatics performance and Rob Dougan's “Clubbed To Death”*. All three of those songs I first discovered because of their music videos and I bought the singles because of that reason (and they also all went to #1 on my personal chart at the time). I guess the art of 'singles' has gradually died away over the years since the physical chart died a death- but I still appreciate artists who make an effort to commission or design artwork for a single, and a corresponding artistic and thoughtful music video which enhances the track, instead of just slapping out an 'official lyric video' or rotating image of the album artwork on a loop. *although I think I first heard this track on the Renford Rejects!

  8. I see that Netanyahu has thrown his toys out of the pram by cancelling an Israeli delegation for talks at the White house about Rafah, and Ben-Gvir calling the UN 'antisemetic' - the absolute clarion call for 'I've lost the argument'. Cry harder bitch/
  9. Went with Otik, really love the atmosphere and energy on that track.. also the maths <3 Pretty close tho as I also really enjoyed the Iglooghost and Bicep tracks this week.

  11. Hey Kath ~ Sharing the DJ HEARTSTRING love atm, that Belfast boiler room set from last summer is helping get me through so many night shifts this year and the closing tracks including the uplifting and positive “In Your Arms” has grown on me so much lately, so I'm pleased to see it in your Top 5. Excellent also to see new entries for I. JORDAN, BICEP & Benjamin Damage, Charli XCX, Porij and Sunareht. Sunareht has been on my radar for a while now and “Break Bandits” is one of my faves off the new EP, though I also enjoyed “Promises” from late 2023. 2024 may be the year of breakbeats returning. We can only hope! Have a great weekend.
  12. Features the lovely Victoria Bergsmen, who was the lead singer in The Concretes. They had a few minor UK hits in 2004, the one I remember the most being the short and sweet “You Can't Hurry Love”. I remember buying this on CD single at the time of its initial release in 2006 and the guy behind the counter said 'oh this will be the song of the summer' then it smashed in at #35 and went no higher.. well until the re-release a year later. It was the same week that I bought “Monster Hospital” by Metric which similarly flopped in at 55. I had the reverse midas touch with buying singles : (

  14. Went for: I. JORDAN - absolute heater.
  15. Yeah, it shows his insecurity and vulnerability - just like Alexei Navalny's death, and the attempted Yevgeny Prigozhin/Wagner group coup in June 2023. He overplayed his hand with the full scale military invasion of Ukraine in Feb '22 and has been desperately reaping the consequences ever since. Probably his only hope now is Trump winning in November and fracturing the western alliance in support of Ukraine.
  16. @1769426190907928800 The results are in, and it's... another landslide. Who saw that coming? This is like that time Lee Wallace hosted the BuzzJack Song Contest.

Elkka has an album called Prism of Pleasure coming out on 4th May! yay The new single “Make Me” samples two 80s hits- Tears For Fears “Pale Shelter” and Fonda Rae's “Touch Me” (later covered by Cathy Dennis in the 1990s). tkrkx97AR7o 1. Break all my walls down 2. Right Here 3. Make Me 4. Crushhh (feat. John Carroll Kirby) 5. Air Tight (feat. Dot Major) 6. Your Skin 7. Passionfruit (feat. John Carroll Kirby) 8. Love the new single, especially when it changes pace like 3 mins in - also is it me or is the font/branding looking very Aphex Twin inspired?
  20. Not really that surprised, he has a history of defecting when exposed as the racist that he is, he used to be a Labour councillor until: But it does expose Sunak's political naivety- here was the man he trusted to front the Conservative comeback, and once again it is another disaster for him. Solid 'are you thinking what we're thinking?' vibes from the Michael Howard era. Just to back-up my point about those who have money, power and influence in the Conservatives - it turns out one of their biggest donors, Frank Hester, has said some pretty appalling things about Diane Abbott. Of course with the current crackdown in "extremists" and toxic rhetoric that has led to the murder of MPs I'm very certain we'll be seeing this being called out by the Tories and the money returned. Oh wait.. @1767475164218810489
  21. pPD8Ja64mRU Swedish band The Knife, who have never had a T75 hit (closest they came was in July 2006 with “We Share Our Mother’s Health” (#85)) with “Heartbeats”, sadly only making #119 in October 2004. The track would later be covered by José González who made it a Top 10 hit in early 2006 after featuring in a Sony Bravia advert. CTAud5O7Qqk #46 in July 2004 - my sister's first dance, which I played as I DJ'd at her wedding. aWR1h-5EzUo Richard Ayoade's fave song = banger. #45 in April 2004. u0zRxxBKZ1A The lead singer in this band sounds so much like Morrissey, I thought it was a Smiths comeback single.. #49 in November 2004. qp4GdI_bTD4 Finally. My personal fave, a song I sent to Unknown Pleasures many years ago- Johnny Boy “You Are The Generation That Bought More Shoes & You Get What You Deserve” (#50, August 2004) - which is the 3rd longest song title ever to chart AFAIK.

Excellent work on the Britpop album. I feel like this is a genre that has been 'done to death' by compilation makers but they've never quite got it right, there are some great inclusions on here like Dubstar and Saint Etienne that tap into my appetite for something that wears its heart on its sleeve - but I think you've captured the mood of the era rly well. Btw, love that you included Bis there - writers and performers of the Powerpuff Girls theme - which is of course a god tier Britpop anthem!
  23. Another potential clash incoming x If Iz has time, could we please have an update to this meme? Scotland 2: 'we're gonna need a bigger y-axis'
  24. Yeah I saw that in full, we had the news on at work on Thursday night and it was quite a spicy speech. Not sure what he did before to become so fired up but it reminded me a bit of Cameron in the 2015 election when he was at that factory saying 'this really PUMPS ME UP' but significantly less cringe- those around him seem to realise that apathy is their ultimate opponent in this election and so targeting things like women's rights (abortion) will help focus the mind of the electorate as to what is at stake. Biden has at least a few things in his favour - incumbency, a recovering economy.. so is just about the favourite at this point but it won't take much for it to flip the other way.
  25. That poll, if replicated in a GE, would translate to around 3 seats - a repeat of the 1993 Conservative party wipeout in Canada. @1766050276828422584
