The Tory fibs and fabrishications thread, Mk III
Even at the time many economists were quite rightly arguing against it, if you remember interest rates were at historic lows, and so many were arguing that the obvious move would have been to invest heavily in infrastructure (energy, transport etc.) and maintain support for vital public services. It was a choice motivated by ideology with no thought to the devastating consequences that it would have on the most vulnerable in society. Osborne had enough money to throw at property investors to cook up mind-numbingly stupid policies like 'Help To Sell Buy' (I was so angry I almost threw a TV out of a window when that policy was expanded in October 2013), but not it seems basic provisions for those who were less fortunate than he and his Eton buddies. If you look at basic indicators of economic health such as productivity, wage growth etc. you see a flatlining since 2010 and the Tories took over. We are in "managed decline". Everything is in decay. Just look at the recent COP summit, the UK representative flies nearly 7,000 miles to vote in some pointless Tory party psychodrama, and I'll bet they hardly noticed they weren't there. Because the UK is now becoming an irrelevance on the world stage. Cameron gambled on the future of the UK to keep his party from breaking apart, fucked off when it didn't go his way, and despite all this, he's allowed to just swan back in to the Lords with no democratic vote and play at being Foreign Secretary. Johnson may be a useless, lazy slob but my hatred will forever be reserved for Cameron and Osborne. The architects for everything we have now.

Would definitely be here for a Utopia win, and Maruja going Top 10 would be an excellent result - the sax is so good on that. It's a difficult instrument to play/control so well.

BBC Radio 1's Sound Of 2024
No mention of yunè pinku 😔 she played one of the best live gigs I went to this year, released a fantastic EP and had a recent solid Boiler Room in Stockholm. Surely 2024 is her year? Mind you Peggy Gou first made my personal chart Top 10 in March 2018 so maybe we have to wait another 5 years..

Post a Christmas song from the 21st Century
eUSzjjdjC98 Mew “She Came Home For Christmas” Originally No76 in December 2002. Re-released and peaked at No55 in December 2003. My introduction to the band was actually with “Am I Wry? No” but this solidified my love for the band.

OPINION POLLS 2019-2024
*Sunak is doing worse than the Tory polling nadir* — just 59% of voters who backed the Tories under Boris Johnson are sticking with them under Sunak — that’s down from 74% in Aug 2022 — and even worse than 63% after Truss’ mini-budget — the Tories under Sunak are in “dire straits” says @jamesjohnson252 https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/202...ers-study-finds worse than Liz Truss !! *.*

The Problem With Spotify
Yes, I completely agree with you ref AI 'art'. It's soulless. Also: AI at it's current level merely reflects back to us what we've already produced, and so it is pretty pointless. I expect it's just a novelty at the moment that will hopefully pass.

The Problem With Spotify
I agree with a lot of the concerns you have raised, however I don't pay for Spotify less on a moral stance but more out of practicality. This is because I don't like it that Spotify can at any point take a song down or change it. For example Shygirl's “BB” - which samples the Spice Girls “Viva Forever” was changed when the sample couldn't be cleared - but having bought the digital single from iTunes I'll always have the proper original copy of it, at least for as long as I can hang on to the file. There are also many songs that I love that I can't access on Spotify, the proper versions of them I mean. Like others, I like to support the artists that make music I love through buying physical copies, attending tours and buying merch... though I appreciate this isn't always possible to survive on or become viable for smaller to medium size bands. Could perhaps a way to address some of the issues be met by a UBI or UBS in the future? I think that we probably need to start having a serious debate about a post-work society brought about by increasing automation, and look at how we prevent the slide into increasingly meaningless jobs (see: David Graeber's Bullshit Jobs). All of this talk about post-work reminds me I still need to read Fully Automated Luxury Communism ! Or we could all join TIDAL...

The UK and transphobia
I see that having incited the hatred, and arguably created the conditions that led to her death, the Fail are now apparently running a podcast to follow the murder trial. It's also called 'Brianna Ghey: The Trial' when she's not on trial at all. Grim. Likewise I've tried to avoid this, I did tho manage to persuade someone at work who is usually quite progressive but was anti the GRA reforms that the Scottish Government tried to bring in last year, to bring them around by explaining that had they existed already they would have prevented the final injustice to Brianna, which is of course being misgendered on her death certificate.

Thanks Callum, solid job on the hosting. I lost Summericia, East Rukahavian and Greenfroze from my vote this month. Thanks to those who pointed deary, a somewhat overlooked single from earlier this year that I picked up on after they recently supported Slowdive. It kinda reminds me of the trip-hop/dream pop adjacent movement that followed the pioneering artists of Portishead/Massive Attack/Mazzy Star in the mid 1990s, def the same sort of vibe and melancholia that I get from it.

BuzzJack Presents... Lost Legends
of those not yet mentioned: Ryuichi Sakamoto </3 sadly lost earlier this year Andrew Weatherall (influential DJ but could use/cite his remixes of Primal Scream for Screamadelica like “Loaded”) Loleatta Holloway - I mean, for “Love Sensation” ALONE Diane Charlemagne - Manchester vocalist on 90s classics “Inner City Life” (DnB) and “The Key: The Secret” MF DOOM - iconic rapper/producer Tony Allen - one of greatest ever drummers, was in The Good, the Bad & the Queen - so maybe “Herculean” from them? I was gonna say Carol Kaye too, but thankfully she's still alive!

Generic ROTW Politics
Congratulations to Pedro Sánchez who has seen off a challenge from the right and been confirmed as PM of Spain again. *.* In doing so they had to grant an amnesty to people involved in the Catalan independence movement during the past decade. https://www.politico.eu/article/pedro-sanch...prime-minister/

'soon' Well it took over a year this time around, but it was still satisfying to see her getting sacked again. Hopefully that's the last we'll ever of see this dangerously unhinged and woefully incompetent politician in the British Government or any prominent position of influence tbh.

Congrats Dandy! That's a very solid Top 2 in what was an incredibly strong contest. Very pleased also to see Neliönoir chalk up a Top 5 - “Literally Everything” really grew on me over the contest. Thanks for the entertaining hostings Harve. You are very welcome! That message from Gaza broke me too </3

I'd agree that it has racist connotations, it's unhelpful at best for it to be used (even if the intentions are for both Israelis and Palestinans to live together freely and peacefully), and as above can be interpreted as threatening by being construed as removing or denying the Jewish right to self-determination. Fully agreed. - The Middle East Today
