Mercury Prize 2023
Live result on BBC Four from 9pm. Even tho they did already win it in 2014, I really want Young Fathers to do this. Their set at Glastonbury was incredible.. “Shame” being dedicated to Suella Braverman. *.* They performed an amazing rendition of “I Saw” apparently. Although I'd also be v happy with a Shygirl win, she's just been intervewed over on 6Music and revealed that she's working on a new album already potentially ready in 6 months!

Sofia Kourtesis - Madres
I am loving “Si Te Portas Bonito” and especially the meaning behind the lyrics, I know little Spanish unfortunately but apparently it roughly translates to 'if you behave nice/decently'. The previous single “Madres” was also beautiful too, both solid singles! Looking forward to the album.

Romy - Mid Air
Really enjoying that TDJ remix. This is now probably my favourite single since “Strong”, but really they've all been decent. I am still waiting though for that absolute slammer that matches SuReaL's 2000 smash “You Take My Breath Away”, she def has it in her, I'm certain!

The UK and transphobia
^ Don't worry Dandy, I didn't think you were - and that's surprising coming from me considering how paranoid and reactionary I am irl. OK, sorry for misunderstanding you Colm. Yeah, I believe that was the original definition, but it has since broadened to include basically anyone who is anti-trans. I fell down a rabbit hole last night reading about Graham Linehan, would not recommend. 😔

One hit wonders of the 21st century
I'd also nominate Rob Dougan for “Clubbed To Death”.. the promo video is great! Originally released in 1995 but finally re-released and charting at #24 in June 2002 in support of his debut album release, with no other Top 40 hits. t7t18ErmxK8

The UK and transphobia
I agree that discussions and debates online can struggle with nuance and can quickly polarise or lead to ppl getting the wrong impression, the instant reaction that any misjudged comment gets today can quickly blow-up out of proportion and the context lost. However, I get an uneasy feeling about this because she did pin (albeit temporarily) an explicitly transphobic comment/account which doubled down on what she appeared to say, using terms that are linked to a lot of the transphobic conspiracies that are propagated by Glinner et. al. It's obviously fine to have an opinion on something but why is it so important speak out on this particular issue when there are many other important issues affecting young people and wider society today? Those comments you've identified are completely ignorant - puberty blockers have been used safely for decades, not only within the context of those who have gender dysphoria, so she is wrong here. As for the comments about 'mixed up little kids' and 'transing away our gay youth', these are pretty offensive comments IMO, if not explicity transphobic per se. I think these would probably be somewhat consistent with having a generally negative opinion on the trans community. Then using the term 'big pharma' just rings all of the conspiracy theory loon alarms anyway. Yes the pejorative term 'TERF' does get bandied around far too easily and in these kind of debates we can risk pushing someone further into these conspiracies by not giving them space, understanding and the opportunity to discuss their genuine concerns. Nobody has said anything about cancel culture in this thread, and I agree with you Dandy that it is awful, more I was just expressing sadness and disappointment but really we should be able to seperate the art from the artist. Just to put this out there- I have no direct experience of ppl in the trans community, so I speak only from what I've read from those that are. I think it's important to hear their voices more than those we end up hearing from and I seek to understand purely on a human empathetic level and I will get things wrong, so I apologise if it comes across in any way insensitive.

One hit wonders of the 21st century
ahlWufJqcSQ “Underwear Goes Inside The Pants” #30 in August 2006. Just the one T40 hit for Lazy-B, although it is an alias of Søren Rasted (Aqua) so you could argue he had many more T40 hits under that band in the 90s, 2000s and this year - courtesy of the Barbie soundtrack. I would have nommed Johnny Boy for “You Are The Generation That Bought More Shoes And You Get What You Deserve” but it shockingly only peaked at number 50. :(

Sufjan Stevens - Javelin
That's what it initially reminded me of too, really beautiful. On repeat!

By-elections 2024
Would that be the same bookies that had Remain 1/4, and Brexit 3/1 on 23 June 2016? Private polling still seems to support it anyway.. @1695876424488321146

By-elections 2024
I think polling suggests that Labour are most likely to take the seat (if the Tories lose it) @1675447694905450496 I mean, there was a whole lot of nonsense in that letter. However, there was a lot of stuff that I really agreed with, especially when she went in hard at Rishi and the Government. If that doesn't end up on massive billboards come the next GE then Labour are missing a massive trick.. I will kind of miss her chaotic camp character and numerous gaffes, but she was completely unfit to be an MP, let alone a member of the Cabinet nor in the House of Lords!

✨ BJSC 157 ✨ SEMI RESULTS
Thank you Kath for the efficient hostings, and thank you to everyone who voted Data_haven through to the final! Looks like it has shaped up to be quite an eclectic final.

✨ BJSC 157 ✨ SEMI RESULTS
That Corinne Bailey Rae track was a total heater IMO, robbed x

✨ BJSC 157 ✨ SEMI RESULTS
It reminded me of Eels, if you remember any of their 90s stuff?

✨ BJSC 157 ✨ SEMI RESULTS
Sad that Pagasa missed out, one of my absolute faves in that semi. It features Nina Persson (of The Cardigans fame) on backing vocals, I guessed it may have been a bit doomed tho.

✨ BJSC 157 ✨ SEMI RESULTS
Persephonia and Scotland 2 both qualifying! Aw, don't say that - I really enjoyed it and enough to give some points, and I wouldn't have discovered the track if you hadn't sent it. That's part of the fun of these contests really, introducing songs that you love to hopefully an audience that may share that love.

✨ BJSC 157 ✨ SEMI RESULTS
YAY for Skall - it reminded me of something that the Orb would have been getting a Top 10 hit for in 1992, so obviously I loved it. <3 Great to see Pestolia through too, the only song that I knew before this contest (apart from DJ Heartstring <3) - Cecile Believe is a very underrated artist.

Sorry- I completely missed this. I have an entry ready to send if you are still accepting entries, but don't worry if not.

The UK and transphobia
You've summed up how I feel about this, I tried to draw on huge amounts of copium to make sense of it by thinking it was perhaps a one-off misguided comment coming from a place of ignorance, but the doubling down (although apparently she has now un-pinned this transphobic comment) with no explanation seems to betray it as her genuine strongly and deeply held opinion. It's very sad and heartbreaking to now see this mask slip, especially given as you say she is a hugely influential and respected artist and an icon in the queer community. It feels like we've lost Róisín, lost her to the monsters that inhabit Glinner and all the other transphobes who spend basically all of their time and oxygen on hatred and division. I hope she is given the chance to reflect on this and at the very least distances herself from those awful people.

Yard Act - Where's My Utopia?
I absolutely love this, and the track length is a must IMO- doesn't overstay it's welcome. It reminds me of like a hybrid between Talking Heads and LCD Soundsystem. 'The longer the cut, the tougher you are And mine drags along the floor' !!

KETTAMA
Been waiting for “Fly Away XTC” to be fully released for some time, absolute solid gold banger. *.*

Donald Trumps arrest
Oh my. It's giving strong Leah McFall “I Will Survive” single artwork energy~

What's been the dance song of the summer?
For me, it's Pangaea's “Installation”. <3

✨ BJSC 157 ✨ Semi Finals!
Ooh hype to Pestolia- I've had Cecile Believe's “Times” on my potench list for ages, but I love this track too. She recently produced and provided backing vocals on Shygirl's 2022 single “Firefly”, one of my favourite singles from last year. Though she hasn't released anything since Plucking a Cherry from the Void, I'm hoping that her time will come soon for more widespread acclaim!
