✨ BJSC 157 ✨ Confirmations!
Sent an euphoric rave banger 4 kath <3
-
Have you ever had your entry stolen or vetoed?
Yeah well-known samples can def get through the Veto with no issues.. I sent Daniel Bortz's “You Can Stay Forever” to 135 which has a sample of Alicia Keys “No One”. In 153 both Kath and blacksquare got to Art School Girlfriend before I did, and I don't think I've mentioned in here that in 129 (when I planned to come back to BJSC during the pandemic) Jonjo got to TSHA “Sister” before me, which finally got a video in February this year and deserved to do so much better than it did in the contest!

Art School Girlfriend - Soft Landing
Yeah this didn't disappoint at all. I can tell that this is going to be perfect for chilled late summer evening listening~ I adore the string arrangements in some of the tracks, particularly in the current single “Real Life” towards the end, which is really growing on me atm. There's a great sense of melancholia throughout, but I also enjoy when it shifts into a different more hopeful gear like when the distorted guitars storm in on “The Weeks”, which is probably my favourite album track on first listen. I'm also obviously a big fan of all of the artwork from this era, all the coloured cloudscapes!

156 🍷 BJSC (St. Burbia's Version) 🍷 FINAL RESULTS
Kathalda-SLAY-zia! Congrats on another win Kath.. when I saw that you had sent “Magic” I had a feeling it would do very well but didn't expect it to win so emphatically. That was a very tense reveal for the results, however it's great to have a jury reveal every once in a while to change things up and make it more interesting. Thank you for hosting Botchia, sorry I was working and so missed the results. Excellent to see Neliönoir hit the Top 10 for the first time, you've sent such consistently great/diverse entries so far and until LSDXOXO they've all got paid dust with unjustly low finishing positions, so it is long overdue - I had expected BAMBII to do pretty well last time round but sadly for whatever reason it was not to be. Anyway, pleased that you are looking to stick around and I look forward to what you end up sending next! I'm also very pleased to finish sitting between my Top 2 of the contest in the Top 10! *.* Thanks to everyone who voted for twst! !! Sadly all that listening to Aphex Twin at full volume and standing right near the speakers at the Cavern nightclub in the 2010s is starting to have an effect in my old age x

Mercury Prize 2023
That's actually a really great list, although I'm a bit sad that Daniel Avery missed out - I guess Fred again.. and Shygirl are repping for electronica on this shortlist, and both v much deserve to be here, but I love that album so much I'm perhaps being slightly biased. Anyway rooting for my faves Young Fathers, Shygirl, Jessie Ware, Jockstrap and Loyle Carner. I haven't heard the Ezra Collective album but I have enjoyed quite a few of their singles playlisted on 6Music over recent years, inc. the collab with Loyle (tho I don't think that's on this new album).

BJSC Top Trumps
Hit Rate- was just (No of Top 10 finishes divided by total number of entries) * 100 to get it as a percentage rather than a decimal. So for example, for Pavel it would be 'never', divided by 'too many' xx I think when I was working on these originally I also had a 'Hipster Smoothie' rating that was out of 10.

Great to see the Cocteau Twins Q, I've never heard that track before but the hook kinda reminded me of “Unworthy” by Thieves, one of my all-time 90s faves <3

Generic ROTW Politics
Looks like it was a gamble that ultimately paid off then to call a snap election to shock and test the momentum building after the local elections. In the end- an inconclusive result with no stable coalition possible, meaning further elections later in the year, which as Iz says could potentially be great for Sánchez in the longer run. The bigger story here, and it's great to see that fall in support for Vox, is that pandering to the far-right and the 'war on woke' (note: a word that can't ever be defined by those who use it most, apart from pointing towards a vague sense of 'things I don't like') only has limited mileage when it comes to crucial elections. PP and Vox going in to coalition in towns seems to have scared a lot of people and posters like the one below seem to be mobilising the left/progressive alliance successfully more than generating support for the opposition. @1683388905217839104 Final result:

Some of the released polling (not an 'Exit Poll') is suggesting a small majority for the conservative/far right coalition but it looks v tight at the moment.

By-elections 2024
Amazing results in both Selby and Ainsty, as well as Somerton and Frome! Hopefully we'll see a similar collapse in Tory support in future by-elections (of which Mid-Bedfordshire should be coming up at some point this autumn..) Slightly frustrating to see Labour come within 2% of taking Uxbridge and South Ruislip but I think it should be taken into consideration that the seat didn't even go Labour in 1997, and there was as Suedehead says above, some pretty disingenuous campaigning by the Tories on ULEZ. Even more frustrating and sad (but not surprising) to see Starmer bow to this pressure, I'm hoping Khan tells him where to go because delaying the introduction of the scheme seems a stupid idea as that will just merely delay the protest vote to make it even more of an issue come the GE or London Mayoral election. But we have at least some divine intervention on this issue... @1683107597249912834

Troye Sivan - Rush
Not sure yet what to make of the chant/chorus tbh but otherwise this is an unexpectedly great funky house serve from Troye- I think it'll be something that just grows and grows on me though, plus it has the perfect serotonin and upbeat/positive feel for the peak summer season. The video is fantastic too.. I can definitely see the criticisms as having some validity as a wider issue, but I think they miss the point and completely glosses over how wonderful it is to have an unapologetic celebration of queer love/sexuality which radiates confidence and joy.

The Official Labour Foot-Shoot Thread, Mk II
Frankly I'm so tired of hearing the stale take that ‘there is no money’ - a dictum developed by Cameron and Osborne (and accepted by the largely right wing media client journalists) to give them sufficient cover for their cruel and damaging cuts/ideology. When they claimed that drastic cuts needed to be made the UK's debt-to-GDP was 60% (it's now over 100%) but after WWII we were at 270%. I know that isn't what people are suggesting and it's that a prospective Government has to look economically competent, but it just isn't in any way true and I reject it totally. The cost of borrowing has gone up, true, however the massive increases last autumn were because Truss and Kwarteng frightened investors by not getting a proper OBR forecast and just slamming >£40 billion tax cuts on a Friday morning before going for a boozy lunch with some bankers and enjoying the 'beakend' at Chequers.. so yeah that panicked everyone, tanked the pound and caused inflation and interest rate rises that we have now to be so much worse than they would have been. That doesn't preclude ANY spending commitment being made in the future, particularly on a no-brainer one like removing the two child benefits cap!! Let's leave aside for one minute how cruel and unfair it is - if you're rich like Boris Johnson (8* + and counting children) or Jacob Rees-Mogg (6 children) then feel free to breed as much as you want, however for those who are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis- and remember this cut largely affects in-work families it must be stated- then no matter how much love and support you could offer your potential new children you wouldn't be able to have any more once you've had 2. That's it, sorry guys. But let's look at how economically illiterate this policy is: the UK birth rate is in continual decline, we've dropped to below 1.6 for the first time on record (2.1 is required for a stable population)- not quite as low as South Korea (0.78) but heading that way. I mean I remember when there was a sitcom on UKTV called 2 point 4 children, and that was only a few decades ago! If we don't address this soon the ageing of our population will overwhelm the shrinking workforce and suck demand out of the economy, leading us into permanent decline. To not prioritise helping poverty stricken children is one thing but to ignore the obvious economic implications of such a damaging policy is IMO just as wrong even if the impacts on fertility aren't actually that marked. Finally, I'd just like to bring up a Tony Benn quote re: Sir Keir. Starmer is a weatherCOCK (emphasis on COCK), not a leader. It doesn't matter if the public don't have the same view, your job as leader is to stick to what you think is the correct course of action and persuade the public. It's not as easy as going to a focus group and being led by them but it's a far more principled and admirable quality. I'm now hearing that Starmer is considering 'potentially scrapping the two child benefit cap' so just waiting for his outriders to tell me how brilliant he is for deciding this and that it's absolutely the right thing to do and he was even more brilliant for suggesting on Sunday that he was ruling it out and thus has formed another embarrassing U-turn (after pissing off most of the Labour support base). I'll wait.. *that we know of.

Huw Edwards named as BBC presenter at centre of scandal
Quite an interesting snap poll released from YouGov yesterday: @1679502894796533760 Opinion seems to be quite split amongst the public. I have to admit that in the light of the more recent allegations by BBC staff, I think that there probably was a public interest for that story to be printed- but I still stand by the fact that the initial story printed by The Sun did not meet that criteria. The fact that junior staff didn't feel comfortable reporting complaints speaks to the toxic environment that STILL exists within the BBC. The Sun can still get in the bin for what they've done however.
