  1. Here are the biggest sellers of the week (not including streaming) with their official midweek position in Blue

    01 02 Union J [NO streaming available]

    02 01 Ed Sheeran

    03 04 Taylor Swift [NO streaming available]

    04 03 Take That

    05 06 Blonde

    06 05 Olly Murs

    07 07 Clean Bandit ft. Jess Glynne

    08 10 James Newton Howard

    09 15 Band Aid 30 [limited streaming available]

    10 14 Ella Henderson

    Union J have around a 5K lead on Ed, and a 7.2K lead on Taylor Swift. Taylor is catching Ed by around 800-900/day, but Ed isn't really catching UJ. So I suspect it'll still be Union J at number 1 on the sales chart but only just ahead of Taylor Swift.

  2. Not bad top 100 for a Tuesday release. I'm not sure of the top 100 positions of the other Xmas songs they released!

    2007 #33 Don't Shoot Me Santa

    2008 #88 Joseph, Better You Than Me

    2009 #110 ¡Happy Birthday Guadalupe!

    2010 #53 Boots

    2011 #112 The Cowboys' Christmas Ball

    2012 #70 I Feel It In My Bones

    2013 #92 Christmas In L.A.

    Similar to 2013 and 2008 in terms of peak position.

  4. Hi James,

    50 41 Sia - Chandelier arrowdown.gif 9 [48-43-44-46-61-69-73-70-70-64-40-39-28-33-26-35-41-50] 18 weeks

  5. Hi Martin,

    Loving the new entries from Elliphant feat. MØ and Kindness ft. Robyn - both great collaborations. Really enjoying the new Clean Bandit single too. No sign of George Maple's "Vacant Space"? Not a fan then, 'cos I thought you'd love it.

    I have two track recommendations for you. First is called "A Rush Of Blood" by Coasts, a new band on the Blogger's Sound of 2015 list. It was released this week, make sure you check it out! The second is "New Name" by Sinkane.

    I haven't listened to the new Mark Ronson tune yet, but will definitely listen soon as it seems to be getting a lot of ~hype~

    BYE

  6. All these people who are PREMATURE and create lists before November is out when some of the best singles/albums of the past few years have been released in December.

    War On Drugs I fully approve of, especially "Red Eyes" which I was thinking of including on my annual christmas 'best of' CD I send out.

  7. @Haus: I really like both songs!!11 Pogues significantly more so that said as it's my favourite festive song, but they both fulfill the 'classy' and 'cheesy' sides that Christmas songs need. I do sometimes wish some more Christmas songs would chart as high as those two though, Greg Lake's I Believe In Father Christmas and Mike Oldfield's In Dulce Jubilo should be smashing every year :(

    I wish that Saint Etienne's 1993 festive tune "I Was Born On Christmas Day" was better known, I think I've heard it once out shopping in December in about a decade. :(

  8. I don't think Canada is such a bad example, Mark Carney has preceded over a massive asset bubble over there, this is now at least 40% bigger than the one in the USA which resulted in the sub-prime mortgage collapse in 2007, and as you say consequently a worldwide crash. It seems nobody learns from the mistakes of the past and we are doomed to repeat it, though you can't exactly lower interest rates from 0.5%... so we are quite royally screwed.

    26 year-old Tahliah Barnett gets a second week atop the chart with "Video Girl"; the stunning second single from her debut LP1, an autobiographical account of her career when she first broke into the record industry as a dancer in 2010. The track is her second to hit to the #1 spot in 2014 giving her a 100% strike rate, and a total of 4 weeks at the top so far, though she will struggle to extend her good fortune into December as several strong tracks line-up inside the Top 5. Climbing for the seventh consecutive week, "B a noBody" the debut single by Soak (Derry's Bridie Monds-Watson) improves 3-2. She has recently made the BBC's longest for the Sound of 2015, an annual event which takes into account the new acts most likely to break, as predicted by influential UK music industry experts. At number 3, Ellery James Roberts returns to the upper echelons with new musical project LUH. "Unities" is the acts debut single and follows previous mega-hit "Kerou's Lament" which spent six weeks at the top back in October/November 2013 and with a 9-3 jump this week, is showing itself to be a strong contender for the Christmas number one.

    Three entirely different sounding tracks debut in the Top 10 this week providing the first Top 10 hits for Danny L Harle, a prolific London electronic musician who has composed numerous scores for film, television and sound installations - "Broken Flowers" broke in 2013 but was brought into the limelight this Autumn in BJSC. It jumps 14-7 this week. The other two top tier debutants are singer-songwriters but from totally different edges of the pop spectrum. Swedish pop singer Tove Styrke is the second act with the first name of Tove to make the Top 10 in 2014 (following Tove Lo's "Habits (Stay High)" which soared to #3 earlier in the summer). A contestant in Swedish Idol 2009, Tove achieved brief success in her home country with 2010s "White Light Moment", but "Borderline" is an altogether different sound, which has some ska influences and a punchy chorus - it moves slowly 11-8 and arrives just ahead of Kate Tempest's "Circles"; an off-beat spoken word track narrating the frustrations of being single, backed by a killer beat. "Circles" ascends 13-10 and rounds out the Top 10.

    There are six new entries to the chart, and all but one are from acts who return to the chart. Leading the charge is the collaboration by Kindness and Robyn, both acts who have made the Top 10 in 2014 and hope to achieve a joint hit with the wonderful "Who Do You Love?" in at No.36. The only new act is Ghost Culture, 24 year-old James Greenwood who worked on "Drone Logic"! and released a couple of singles this year that I totally overlooked - "Giudecca" is a house music jam that deserves a second chance and gets one at No. 49. The first of the Christmas tracks charts for Welsh group Los Campesinos! and "When Christmas Comes" taken from their forthcoming Christmas EP at No.42. Public Service Broadcasting return with their first track from new forthcoming 2nd LP The Race For Space, "Gagarin", a disco funk track inspired by Yuri Gagarin, the Russian cosmonaut and first man in space. Shura (who appears in the Blogger's Sound of 2015 longlist) returns after her No. 2 smash "Touch" with "Indecision" at No. 48 and finally alt-J return with "Left Hand Free" at No.46.

  10. Yay at Soak making it. Having seen her all the way back in 2012, I knew she'd make the list at some stage. I'll still never forgive Bre for stealing her for Unknown Pleasures (even though my alternate entry ended up finishing above her)

    He's renowned for being incredibly cheap and stealing others' potentials with his entries for BJSC and UP, you were just the latest victim. :(

    Here is the Blogger's Sound of 2015.

    *All We Are - Liverpool 3 piece who describe their music as 'psychedelic boogie'.

    *Black Honey - Brighton based indie band formerley known as Kill Moon

    *Chløë Black - Tags her music as 'goth 'n' soul'

    *Coasts - Indie rock band from Bristol who have comparisons with Foals

    *Deers - A band from Spain who first created a stir with some lo-fi demos earlier this year.

    *Fickle Friends - Danceable indie music from another Brighton based band.

    *Flyte - Classic old fashioned songwriting with an indie pop twist.

    *Halfrican - Glasgow based punk rock

    *Honne - R&B influenced electronics and soul pop.

    *Låpsley - Solo artist from Liverpool making downtempo electronica with a range of influences.

    *Prides - Synth pop group from Scotland, who performed at the Commonwealth Games

    *Shura - Singer songwriter and producer using synths to create a mellow pop sound.

    *Soak - Singer songwriter from Derry whose real name is Bridie Monds-Watson.

    *Sophie Jamieson - Singer songwriter who has been compared to Daughter. Was also on last year's list.

    *Tei Shi - Describes her music as 'mermaid music'. Make of that what you will!

    A much better list (no Years & Years D: because they had a Top 10 hit this year).

  11. Blank Space will never be even top 2 without Spotify... it will lose 15K each week to ED or someone else. I just hate it! This is so number 1 materiel.

    I wouldn't say 'never', it is quite likely that if she receives a boost in 'gift card' week (when the market is generally up by 50% or so) the streaming disadvantage she has will be obliterated.

  12. I predict Years & Years will win this, with a re-release of "Real" or "I Wish I Knew" will go Top 10 in the new year.

    James Bay will probably win the critics' choice.

    Tomorrow at 0830 the Blog Sound of 2015 will be released, featuring (in addition to the BBC list) I would expect the following:

    * Laura Doggett

    * Seinabo Sey

    * Josef Salvat

    * Chløë Black

    * Ryn Weaver

    Davies makes over 20k a year as a landlord. Not that that has ANYTHING to do with his obviously principled libertarian position http://www.moopy.org.uk/forums/images/smilies/gggggg.gif

    Well QUITE.

    I do find this all very depressing. Whilst the media continues to bang the drum about how immigration is the root of all our problems, there is absolutely nothing being done to address the housing crisis that is affecting London but also the vast majority of young people in this country. Whilst this bill alone isn't going to sort that out, it does at least offer security to tenants who just want a secure roof over their head. It is one of the most important issues right now, and SIXTY MPs bother to turn up whilst the rest of them go out to the local ASDA to punch a few Granny's in the faint hope of getting 10% off of an overpriced knock-off telly.
