Early '94 was quite BARREN to say the least however Stereolab's wonderful "French Disko" was a new entry at 75 on the first chart of the year (New Year's Day 1994) and I would have given that a week up top over Pearl Jam (who I have never really liked excepting "Dissident").
"Cornflake Girl" remains a joy however, I remember hearing it for the first time. It is my favourite song by her but I never really explored Tori's back-catalogue due to The Beekeeper and her obsessive fans that just plain put me off her. She sounds like Bush on this and I love the rambling piano and wild west whistles. Good!

"You're Not Good Enough" racing up in my affections to be a late contender for one of the best songs of 2013 and the album is amazing.
Sad news about his apartment though. I was leaving New York as that happened, poor Dev. :(
Dev Hynes, aka Blood Orange, has revealed this his New York apartment burned down last night (December 16), destroying his property and resulting in the death of his pet dog.The musician revealed the news via Twitter earlier today (December 17), confirming that he lost everything he owned, including new music and personal items of sentimental.
Posted in a series of tweets, Hynes wrote: "Last night, the unthinkable happened. My entire apt burnt down while I was out. I've lost everything I own, including scores, hard drives...clothes, sentimental items. Everything from my life is gone. My dog died in the fire. I will love you forever Cupid. I miss you."
Last week it was revealed that Hynes will return to London for a one-off Blood Orange gig at Village Underground in February. Hynes will perform at the east London venue on February 19. Tickets for the date will be available from Friday, December 13. See below for further details.
Released in November, Blood Orange's latest album 'Cupid Deluxe' follows Hynes' 2011 debut. The album includes a number of guest appearances from the likes of David Longstreth (Dirty Projectors), Samantha Urbani (Friends), Clams Casino, Despot, Kindness and Skepta. Caroline Polachek from Chairlift appears on the single 'Chamakay'.
Hynes has produced music for Solange, Sky Ferreira and MKS, as well as being a former member of Test Icicles and creating music under the Lightspeed Champion name.

You're preaching to the converted here Craig - many a day in the past I lived off ASDA Super Noodles (9p RRP - with a 10% discount taking it down to just 8 pence). Totally disgusting and full of fat and salt of course.
Your best bet to save money is to go veggie as meat is comparatively very expensive.

If the food banks were closed down, those extreme cases that need free food (about 1% imho) could still get it, i suggested supplying food coupons to them for use at the local supermarket, the extreme cases would not starve
But imho the other 99% of foodbank users would not need foodbanks if they lived within their means, budgeted properly, played ball with their jobseekers agreement, took advantage of supermarket deals, made more of their own meals etc, how are they going to sort their lives out if they are just going to get free food? where is the incentive
The gap between rich and poor was higher under Maggie than now yet there was no food banks under Maggie and i certainly didn't see starved dead bodies in the street or any reports of them in even left wing papers, people managed, food banks are a modern phenomenon, people can manage without them in 99% of cases
1%, 99% - are these figures just being plucked from thin air?
Anyway despite our clear political differences, I do partly agree with you over your suggestion that as a society we should be focussing on properly budgeting our income/out-goings and not spending on luxuries that are beyond affordability. But that is only ever going to be a part of the solution, there are always going to be those that just cannot afford to heat their homes pay council tax, water bills, AND live their day-to-day lives as well as pay for food etc. We can't shut those people out because of a few who want to supplement their income with some free food.. I feel quite strongly over that. A bit like how a small minority of people are clinically/morbidly obese people, and are to blame for their own heart problems/diabetes which cost the NHS a lot of money, but I don't mind funding the NHS for them if it also mainly helps those that can't afford to pay for operations that could be life saving. (Which is why I just don't understand the US health industry AT ALL).
-
You do realise Sandro that all of this irresponsible spending is what is fueling your so-called "economic recovery" (aka ticking debt time bomb)?
And closing down food banks? Are you mad? Just because a few people are using them irresponsibly we have to punish those that genuinely need them to survive because your arse of a government has done absolutely sweet FA to lower the cost of living? Yes that seems like a sensible suggestion.

Iain Duncan Smith has always come across to me as a bit of a sanctimonious twat, especially with that perma-smug expression on his face.
Walking out of debate is childish and quite frankly pathetic. He should apologise.
Anyway the wider issue here in our society is all about debt and sense of entitlement; I want that new iPhone, I've got to get that expensive games console for Timmy this Christmas even if it bankrupts us (morally and monetarily) - these are the values that Thatcher have left us with... the UK has the highest per household proportionally by far in Europe- but don't worry just keep spending to fuel an economic recovery based entirely on debt. Really don't worry about tomorrow, but it on credit to pay back at 15%APR over 12,000 years. What? 2007? No, that definitely won't happen again.

Loving "Careless" - can we make this a pinned thread or something; it would be really good to have an active thread on new dance music releases.
Activa "Daydreaming" // Year: 2011 // Genre: Trance
This was out a while ago (and in turn remixed a track from 2006) but I really enjoyed hearing it out this year, that and Simon Paterson "Taxi". Trance FTW.

I still haven't seen Public Service Broadcasting yet because I am a bit of a flop trying to organise things- some of my friends (who I recommended them to) did though so I got them more ticket sales: YAY. Woo for the album topping your chart though - I love "Everest", "Signal 30", "Night Mail" and "Spitfire" - and the opening track with all the elements is also a joy, a very consistently solid/decent album.
Very much looking forward to the singles because frankly it is ALL ABOUT the singles baby. :D

There's got to be some Portishead surely? "Glory Box"?
Maybe The Cranberries with "Zombie" or "Linger"?
Primal Scream "Rocks"?
Blur "Girls and Boys"?
Not sure where you stand on europop but did Corona manage a week at No. 1 with "Rhythm Of The Night" (after Bastille completely ruined it recently)?
Could be COMPLETELY wrong. :P
EDIT: Was Atlantic Ocean "Waterfall" 1994? I have it in my iTunes as '94 but can't remember exactly when it was released/charted.

The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds
1 Week
The third quarter of 1993 was a period when the peak of the decade started. It wouldn't end for 5 years. Some magic singles only manage one week at number 1 and some dont get there at all.
This is one of the lucky ones. One of their hookier numbers - it ended up on chill-out albums but it's far too uplifting for that.
Absolutely adore this. The vocals are taken from a Rickie Lee Jones interview - but the real winner here is the tune itself. Outstanding - the Cumulonimbus Mix is the Dr Blind CHOIX version though. :P

Foals are the first act to have 2 Christmas number 1s. :D
#1 / #2
2000 Eminem featuring Dido "Stan" / Rui Da Silva ft. Cassandra "Touch Me"
2001 Kosheen "Catch" / Daniel Bedingfield "Gotta Get Thru This"
2002 Coldplay "The Scientist" / Liam Lynch "United States Of Whatever"
2003 Mew "She Came Home For Christmas" / Outkast "Hey Ya!"
2004 The Go! Team "Ladyflash" / Kylie Minogue "I Believe In You"
2005 Sigur Rós "Hoppípolla" / The Pogues ft. Kirsty MacColl "Fairytale Of New York [2005]"
2006 I Was a Cub Scout "Pink Squares" / Damien Rice "9 Crimes"
2007 Foals "Balloons" / Amy Winehouse "Love Is A Losing Game"
2008 Ladyhawke "My Delirium" / The Asteroids Galaxy Tour "Around The Bend"
2009 The Drums "I Felt Stupid" / Lady GaGa "Bad Romance"
2010 Crystal Castles ft. Robert Smith "Not In Love" / Kanye West "Runaway"
2011 Charli XCX "Nuclear Seasons" / Jamie N Commons "The Preacher"
2012 Foals "Inhaler" / Laura Mvula "She"
Time to dust this topic off.
2013 #1?? / #2??
It is a 3-way battle for me this year! Really don't know who it'll be until the weekend when I've got more time to listen to the contenders. Last year was pretty solidly Foals' - their 2nd Christmas Number One too. :P
-
Catching up here massively.
Loving the #1 - the version that they played on the final of the Grand Prix on the BBC was inspired. "Signal 30" was their biggest hit on my chart this year, reaching #5 in April but nothing has surpassed "Everest" (a No. 1 in December 2012) for me yet - though the album is really addictive and a firm favourite of mine from the year.
Good to see Vampire Weekend (CALLED IT!) and London Grammar in the Top 10 - though I much preferred "Wasting My Young Years". Loads of tunes I've not come across and therefore new stuff for me to discover. Thanks for sharing Chris.

Hey Martin!
Nice #1, I much prefer Keane's original but Lily's cover is alright (still), I do like "Hard Out Here" though and it is great to see that in the Top 5.
I am also liking the following:
05 (10) Deirdre & The Dark – Skeleton [5wks] (32-24-18-10-5) A Top 20 hit for me, good track and hopefully will hear more from them in 2014
06 (14) NONONO – Pumpin’ Blood [5wks] (30-25-20-14-6) Nice enough, got to #31 for me last month - could see this being a moderate hit next year possibly
07 (05) Hearts – Hemiplegia [5wks] (11-4-2-5-7) FANTASTIC. I have the EP and it is glorious - spent 2 weeks at No. 1 for me.
10 (07) The Killers – Shot At The Night [7wks] (10-6-9-13-11-7-10) Their best song since "Spaceman", managed a No. 14 peak but had good longevity
12 (18) Keane – Somewhere Only We Know [2wks] (18-12) Reached No. 2 for me in 2004 - lovely
14 (08) Foxes – Youth [10wks] (22-10-4-4-2-4-6-6-8-14) Great track and MUCH better than "Clarity" - got to No. 4 for me in early 2012
18 (11) Katy B – 5am [10wks] (5-5-3-6-4-7-5-7-11-18) Still loving this very much - peaked at No. 8 for me
19 (12) Lady Gaga feat. R. Kelly – Do What U Want [6wks] (38-28-20-13-12-19) Climbing on my chart still (No. 24 this week) probably her best single since "Judas"
20 (**) London Grammar – Nightcall [1wk] (20) Really good cover of the Kavinsky original
21 (34) The Naked And Famous – I Kill Giants [2wks] (34-21) Good track - probably borrows the same chord structure as the awesome "Girls Like You"
26 (**) AWOLNATION – Sail [1wk] (26) OLD song :P Charted in 2011 for me, went Top 20
27 (22) Lorde – Royals [9wks] (21-11-5-9-8-12-17-22-27) Nowhere near as good as "Tennis Court" - just missed out on a Top 20 place, peaking at No. 21
28 (23) CHVRCHES – The Mother We Share [27wks] (33-25-15-12-17-22-25-25-27-32-37-33-28-34-X-8-3-2-1-1-2-3-7-10-14-19-23-28) Wow at this chart run! Spent 17 weeks on my chart and peaked at No. 9 last November
29 (21) Disclosure feat. London Grammar – Help Me Lose My Mind [9wks] (27-15-7-5-5-9-14-21-29) :D Got to No. 2 for me last month. The Lawrence brothers can do no wrong!
30 (24) Storm Queen – Look Right Through [10wks] (40-34-27-22-14-14-10-16-24-30) Decent enough track, No. 33 for me - much better than that Garrix rubbish anyway
33 (28) Moderat – Bad Kingdom [14wks] (25-17-11-7-3-3-5-8-11-17-21-25-28-33) A very good track - deserved to beat Mons Montis IMO but it wasn't to be. :( Went Top 20 for me.
36 (31) London Grammar – Strong [16wks] (12-5-1-1-1-1-2-4-7-9-13-18-23-28-31-36) Peaked at No. 3 for me, still love this!
Great chart!

Hey SS,
Your #1 is very good - it's like a cross between early Chemical Brothers and The Propellerheads.
Great to see Gesaffelstein in the Top 10, should make my festive Top 10 on Sunday which is good because it makes everyone just instantly conjure up images of Christmas doesn't it? :P I a also liking the new Katy B single a lot and very impressive climbs for Ásgeir, Blood Orange, Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams and Franz Ferdinand.
:o New These New Puritans track. I haven't heard from them since "We Want War" in 2010, must check that out.
