*INDIE ANTHEM ALERT*. Gaslight Anthem were back this year, getting their biggest hit since "The '59 Sound" hit #7 in June 2009; the catchy "45" leapt to #9 in July and is enough for #90 on the 2012 countdown. Another band who returned this year to little fanfare were Eel Pie Island residents, Mystery Jets, whose fourth studio album Radlands was largely ignored but still managed to make the UK Top 40. Lead single from it "Someone Purer" (#84) put them back in the Top 10, reaching #6 in April. 2012 was a bit of a flop year for me on Unknown Pleasures, though my favourite entry from the year still makes my Top 100, that being the wonderfully summer-like "Neptune" by Lemonade at #83, it peaked at only #12 but is not the highest non-Top 10 peaking single, that is much, much higher! :o The first Top 5 hit to fall here is Burial's "Kindred EP" (#85) which made #4 but had a less-than-consistent chart run, the fantastic EP did become his highest peaking hit/EP to date, just barely out-peaking "Street Halo EP" which made #5 last year. The first Lana Del Rey and M83 hits to fall ("Ride" at #86 and "Reunion" at #87) are follow-ups to their massive chart success last year, though Lana Del Rey does suffer somewhat from the year running out with "Ride" and does still have 2 more massive hits still to come. The huge influence of Unknown Pleasures begins to show on this years chart (more on that later..), but in the first ten we already see the entry for Unknown Pleasures IX winner Asbjørn at #99 (entered by someone who I forget the name of, its not important or relevant to the commentary though so no worries), next to at #100 NYC's Hooray For Earth who were entered into the competition in 2011. There are some hits from acts who had massive hits in 2011, namely from The Drums ("Days" at #98), but also including Bombay Bicycle Club; who continued a successful run of hits from the ..Fix era with "How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep?" just about making it to the 100 in at #97. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs also re-released "Household Goods" (#95) which went Top 10 in September but failed to bring the #2 success of "Garden" which remains Orlando Higginbottom's biggest hit to date. The big hit here is one that has yet to fulfil it's potential, "Wings" grabs the #93 after just 8 weeks on the chart, and so far 5 of those have been inside the Top 10! Crocodiles (entered in '11 by me to Unknown Pleasures) round out the 100-91 section with "Sunday (Psychic Conversation #9)" which peaked at #8 in April.
