Unknown Pleasures XXXI Voting
At least there was a health warning! You don't always get that in BJSC with some of the offpiste entries... Have had a few listens through and there are some lovely dark synths on offer, which i'm v much here for. Will prob get a final list over on Friday after work if that' s ok.

Beyoncé - Break My Soul
This is pretty good, it's ~growing I think I will be seriously disappointed tho if the LP doesn't deliver: More bangers served than your high st butchers, leaning on the major touch points of 1990s dance music reclaimed/updated for the 2k22 market, making up a heavy concept album that celebrates the death throes of late stage capitalism/neoliberalism. …with THIS cover art

That was intense, absolutely terrifying crash but just so relieved and amazed that there was no serious harm to the drivers. @1543634407986184193

Doctor Blind Chart - 3rd July 2022
Doctor Blind Chart - 3rd July 2022 Ireland's Fontaines D.C. chalk up a fifth consecutive week atop my chart, but they look under immediate threat from fellow Glastonbury performer KH (aka Four Tet) who moves up 4-2 with “Looking At Your Pager”. “I Love You” is the currently the joint-longest runner at #1 this decade along with Leon Vynehall's “An Exhale” (2021), Páula, Povoa & Jerge's “Primavera” (2020) and KennyHoopla's “how will i rest in peace if i'm buried by a highway?//” (2020).. no song has managed six weeks since The Horrors' “Something To Remember Me By” back in late 2017. KH is 44 year-old DJ/music producer Kieran Hebden - who equals his highest ever position on my chart, previously held unchallenged by “Two Thousand and Seventeen” which peaked at No2 in er, 2017. Seven new entries break into the chart this week: including returns from Gorillaz, Phoebe Bridgers, Empress Of, and NIMMO with debuts for R U Init - a mysterious music, fashion, and art collective inspired by 90s dance music, LF SYSTEM - Scottish DJs Sean Finnigan and Conor Larkman, and Glimji & jamesjamesjames. “Surf Solar” is one of my favourite Cumulonimbia entries - the video (Penguins), the bass, the pacing. It also iconically led for one of the leaderboard updates IIRC! OFbE3lHTcuo Clams Casino – I’m God (Skall, BJSC 58) - this is god tier, how this didn't win!

Train Thoughts.
On the rail strikes - public support has actually increased over the past week. Mick Lynch is a fantastic communicator, a complete breath of fresh air! I wish we had some politicians that could speak as clearly and directly as he has, cutting through all the tired media attack lines. @1542125147968217088

French Presidential Election 2022
Isn't part of the reason that the far right ended up doing anomalously well was because of Macron asking supporters to abstain in NUPES v National Rally runoffs. Centrism= useful idiots A similar example from UK politics is the Lib Dems and 'The Independent Group' voting against compromise proposals for Brexit that would have passed a much softer Brexit deal.

Were OCC right to reset 'Running Up That Hill'?
Oh, you mean apart from when Ben E King's “Stand By Me” went back to No1 in 1987 or The Clash's “Should I Stay Or Should I Go” went back to No1 in 1991 or Mint Royale's “Singin' In The Rain” from the post download era of 2008. I think the OCC were right to allow the reset- the song has clearly had a significant uplift in consumption and is more popular than anything else out right now purely because a new generation are just now discovering Kate's music. I think that it's significant, clearly a great thing, and it is right that the chart reflects that.

k👠th chart - 17 June 2022
Hey Kath, Gave that new TSHA track a listen as she rarely misses, quite the emotional banger.. thanks for the discovery with that one. Sorry you had to work, I can feel ur pain this week as I've just had 2 nightshifts instead of a full weekend and it was quite stressful at times too- but the Top 10 similarities continue this week which is cheering me up, great to see Shygirl, niina, KH all still riding high. Plus amazing to see former DB #1s from Ibibio Sound Machine & ill peach debut, as well as our entrant to BJSC Ivy Hollivana- def check out her other stuff, she has a lot of very underrated music out. Have a great week!

Ooh, I didn't realise this was coming back already, thank you for allowing at least 2 weeks to listen to all the songs- the last edition I had to rush my listening as I was heading off on holiday the week of the deadline. Have sent something that has been on my potentials list for this for some time, looking forward to making some great discoveries as always.

🌈Pride III: Voting
Great to see Kae Tempest included, have been a great fan of their work for some time! Also love to see Elliot Brett (Lynks), Honey Dijon, TORRES and in particular Shamir here. <3 I had been thinking about sending “On My Own”, but “Cisgender” is a good choice too. For this spin-off I chose Tama Gucci (aka Kymani Floyd) and X-Coast's (Bojan Cizmic) collab. “I LET YOU”. Tama Gucci is an up-and-coming artist from Miami's queer underground scene, and X-Coast grew up in the war-torn Novi Sad (Serbia) but was inspired to produce music by the energy of early rave, gabber, and later on jungle - encapsulated in the 1990s by the Prodigy. Shaped by and created for the community cultivated by the Internet Friends collective in Florida, “I LET YOU” is a fun and catchy banger that serves as a celebration for Pride. “Raving is a form of therapy, a necessity for some people... It's an escape, it's a fantasy world —”. This was the community that first gave Kymani the chance to perform, and I thought it would be good to send an upbeat celebratory track for this Spin-Off, which juxtaposes thumping bass and acid house influenced production against the turbulent, vulnerable and emotionally charged lyricism dealing with the malaise over a controlling relationship.

BJSC 145 | The Final Results
Ooft, sorry I had to miss the results- I had a 5am start this morning so had to crash early last night but thank you to Noche for a great and smoothly hosted contest, you did a fantastic job- hope you can get a well earnt rest now. Congrats to J00ps for getting the gold with a retro 80s smasher, an inspired choice. rly great to see Ibibio Sound Machine rack up a T5 finish even if frustratingly close to the win, but regardless that's a fantastic result and I'm really pleased for Mark that it crossed over so well with so many enjoying it. “Protection From Evil” is just an incredible track that is one of my faves from the year so far. Ditto “COMATOSE” which I was also happy to see did really well for Bré. Thanks especially all for the votes for Ivy Hollivana- particularly to Dobbo, Ansel, Frank, Bré, Kath, Rob, Dandy* and Rob for the medal positions. <3 If you liked “GENESIS” then def check out her other EPs as there's plenty of similar breakbeat/drum and bass/trance type stuff that's highly underrated IMO, she's quite into Arca and Bjork which is how I found her. Btw I think Dandy should be concerned that his taste is merging yet further with mine (or mine with his) because the rest of his Top 3 matched mine. Triple D & O's all round. *.*

The UK and homophobia
I don't know if you've ever read Another Day in the Death of America by Gary Younge, but it's a pretty sobering read on the state of gun violence in America rn. It's a toxic mix, especially when combined with the chronic lack of vital access to mental health services in some states.. we had Dunblane here in 1996 that seemed to be the tipping point, changing wider attitudes sufficiently to demand fundamental changes to make our society much safer. Yesterday was actually 6 years to the day since the horrific Orlando nightclub shooting at Pulse- a reminder that such events whilst thankfully uncommon are still happening.. but as you say, the worst thing that can be done in the face of that is to give in but I do wonder just what it will take to make the same social acceptance/demand of change like we had here in the UK?
