Underwhelming winner, not least because I saw the spoiler nearly an hour before it was actually announced on the BBC broadcast, but was good to have the live performances back this year (well, from 9 of the 12 anyway), Jacob Alon and Pa Salieu's performances particularly stood out for me.

Not gonna lie... at least based on how much I enjoyed it before 2012, 'Rooftops' would probably be my favourite song on this list (maybe 2nd after 'Gimme The Light'). I still get both that and 'Last Train Home' stuck in my head fairly often whenever I'm reminded of Ian Watkins existing (which has of course been a lot of the time recently) and it sucks because I thought they were great songs but I now can't remember them without feeling a bit ill. I'm usually fine with separating art from artist but I can't get past it in this case.

I think Wolf Alice would be my shout for this now too - consistently getting critically acclaimed top 2 albums for a decade now and have made the singles chart with at least one song from each of the last 3 albums but no top 40s yet (hopefully they can break their duck soon like Mr. Impala did). Royal Blood are in a similar camp - actually having 4 for 4 #1 albums - although their most recent album felt somewhat less impactful than the previous ones.
