Been playing back through their back catalogue the past few days and i forgot how many highlights they've actually had.

X&Y for the album win (although it will probably be last now).

I didn't do the albums rate because I'm not that familiar with their first 3/4 albums as a whole, but their singles back catalogue is ridiculously strong! My 11 for the win of course though :D

They do have some incredible artwork don't they?

Unsurprisingly, Their second and now eleven year old album dominates this. It was largely seen as the album that catapulted them into the best of the best commercially and critically. Its very...understated, I can appreciate the cold, 'less is more' style of some of them, its not my favourite album by them though, that one came in second.

X&Y was a huge commercial success, but was slightly derided by critics as a massive comedown from their first two albums. I can to an extent see what they mean (more on that later) but the album as a whole holds a lot of memories and it was the album that first got me into them. I'm glad to see it does quite well on here.

Their still well remembered debut, Parachutes comes in third here. The two newest albums take up the bottom two slots despite still being as strong as ever sales-wise, I do really like both actually and do like to think they both have quite a unique sound throughout. Overall, these results are pretty much a reflection of what you would expect from a 'definitive' Coldplay album rate, I can tell you that the results in the singles are ANYTHING BUT, stay tuned.

Right, here are the singles. I'm lacking inspiration so Wikipedia will be your co-host tonight:

Here are the bottom 4:

24. The Hardest Part (X&Y)

Average: 5.45

Highest Rate: 10 (Gezza)

Lowest Rate: 0 (Grebo)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/18/ColdplayTheHardestPart.jpg/220px-ColdplayTheHardestPart.jpg

"The Hardest Part" is a song by British alternative rock band Coldplay. It was written by all four members of the band for their third album, X&Y. A piano-based ballad song, it begins with a piano melody, followed with electric guitar lines, that accompanies slow-tempo drumming. It was released on 3 April 2006 as the fourth single from X&Y. The song was released as a radio-only song on United Kingdom radio stations. It appeared on the United States Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart and peaked at number 37. "The Hardest Part" also charted in both the Italian and New Zealand Charts.

The song was well received by critics. The track was complimented for its musical style. Regional singles were released in Canada, Europe, and Australia; a different version was released in Taiwan. Promo singles were released for the UK and US. The international version of the single was made available in the UK on 19 June 2006.

Personal Opinion: Complete non shock of a last placing and a complete non song to boot. Not gonna dwell on this further as I don't like talking about Coldplay like this.

23. Christmas Lights (N/A)

Highest Rate: 10 (Griff)

Lowest Rate: 1 (richie)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/81/Coldplay_-_Christmas_Lights.JPG/220px-Coldplay_-_Christmas_Lights.JPG

"Christmas Lights" is a song by British alternative rock band Coldplay released on 1 December 2010, as a digital download.[1] Described by the band as "a mid-tempo number" in the key of G major, the song was released to very positive reviews. The cover art is by Yu Matsuoka Pol.

PO: I actually really like this, its of course completely typical Coldplay and won't win them any new fans, but I credit them with at least attempting to release an original Christmas song.

22. Politik (A Rush of Blood To The Head)

Average: 5.81

Highest Rate: 10 (RabbitFurCoat)

Lowest Rate: 0 (Robadonna)

No artwork and no wiki article because of course it was not released as a single. Controversial choice to include perhaps, but they have performed it live recently (including when I saw them) so I saw it fit to include it. A rather angry and forceful song by their usual style, its not really for everyone, but its definitely a little bit different and for me, definitely one of the standouts on the album.

21. Hurts Like Heaven (Mylo Xyloto)

Average: 5.95

Highest Rate: 9 (Bré, Chez Wombat)

Lowest Rate: 3 (Grebo, richie, Robadonna)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/17/Coldplay_-_Hurts_Like_Heaven_(Promotional).jpg/220px-Coldplay_-_Hurts_Like_Heaven_(Promotional).jpg

"Hurts Like Heaven" is a song by British rock band Coldplay. It was written by all members of the band and producer Brian Eno for Coldplay's fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto. The song was released as the album's fifth and final single on 27 July 2012.

PO: I've already said it, but this is by far one of the standouts of the album and a really quite interesting direction for Coldplay, it sounds almost Bruce Springsteen-esque. I was always rather annoyed this wasn't released over the inferior Charlie Brown, extremely disappointing that its chance has been and gone.

A Rush Of Blood To The Head! The album that got me into Coldplay.
Oh, and I gave Christmas Lights a 10!

Looking at the artwork so far and assuming that the band don't appear on any other the other single sleeves still to appear, I imagine Coldplay are one of the only artists releasing music so far into their career not to feature on their artwork! :o

I've got no strong opinions on the songs that have appeared. I like "Christmas Lights" are a Christmas single, but it does pale in comparison to their greater singles. I still listen to it every year though!

Now for the tracks we actually care about!

20. Lovers in Japan (Viva La Vida...)

Average: 5.97

Lowest Rate: 1 (Grebo)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/49/Lovers_in_Japan.jpg/220px-Lovers_in_Japan.jpg

"Lovers in Japan" is a song by British alternative rock band Coldplay. It was written by all members of the band for their fourth album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. The song is built around an introductory tack piano sound, then followed by chiming guitars and soaring choruses, supported by the pianos and rhythms that accompany the song's lyrics. "Lovers in Japan" also includes the track "Reign of Love" on the album.

It was released on 4 November 2008 as the fourth single from Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends and has reached number 10 in Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart. The song has also appeared on Billboard's Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks on the number 19 peak position. "Lovers in Japan" was well received by music critics, who noted the track's general sound. Although the single is seen as the fourth single from the album, the version on the single is the Osaka Sun Mix, which is featured on Prospekt's March EP, which thus made "Lovers in Japan" also the first single from the mentioned EP.

(PO: I love this, it has such a relaxing and positive feel about it. Unfortunately didn't do anything here and not very well remembered)

19. Shiver (Parachutes)

Average: 6.02

Highest Rate: 11 (RabbitFurCoat)

Lowest Rate: 2 (Robadonna)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/0f/Shiver_cover_art.JPG/220px-Shiver_cover_art.JPG

"Shiver" is a song written and recorded by British alternative rock band Coldplay. British record producer Ken Nelson and Coldplay produced the track for their debut album Parachutes. Vocalist Chris Martin admitted that "Shiver" was written for a specific woman, from whom the media has generated several speculations. The song contains influences attributed to American singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley, whom Coldplay's early influences were drawn from.

The song was released as the album's lead single in the United Kingdom, and second in the United States following the hit single "Yellow". Initially a commercial disaster, it was later re-released in 2001. The single reached number 35 on the UK Singles Chart, and its critical reception has been generally positive.

(PO: Their first ever charting single in the UK doesn't fare very well here, it did take me a while to get into this, but its a very nice listen now. its odd in that it definitely has a Coldplay feel to it yet still feels very much in the past in terms of their sound)

I know quite a lot of artists that don't seem to appear on their single artworks! I guess it depends on the image and all...

Yay for ROBTTH but a big boo for poor "The Hardest Part" - it is a bit Coldplay by numbers but I still love it!

18. Charlie Brown (Mylo Xyloto)

Average: 6.25

Highest Rate: 9 (HausofYeezus, Gezza, Mattias, Dandy*, Iz)

Lowest Rate: 0 (Griff)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b4/CharlieBrown.jpg

"Charlie Brown" (originally titled "Cartoon Heart") is a song by British alternative rock band Coldplay. The song was released as the third single from their fifth studio album Mylo Xyloto. The single was listed by Q magazine as their track of the day on 2 December 2011. The music video for the song was released on 3 February 2012, as well as a live version on 6 December 2011.

(PO: Great guitar, quite anthemic, a lot to love here but but I can't help but think there was better on the album and it remains quite a baffling single choice.)

17. Don't Panic (Parachutes)

Average: 6.204

Highest Rate: 9 (Mattias, AnthonyT)

Lowest Rate: 3 (Dandy*)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/2/21/DontPanic1.jpg/220px-DontPanic1.jpg

"Don't Panic" is a song written and recorded by British alternative rock band Coldplay. Originally titled "Panic", the earliest known version of the song existed in 1998, performed live during the band's first gig in the same year. It had a different melody, and was included in the band's second EP, The Blue Room. The track was reproduced by Coldplay and British producer Ken Nelson for the band's debut studio album, Parachutes.

Following their successful releases in 2000, Coldplay and their record label Parlophone thought there was enough exposure of the album in the United Kingdom. Thus, the decision of releasing a fourth single would be for regions that had not been overdosed by the hit singles "Yellow" and "Trouble". They settled on "Don't Panic", which at the time was an audience favorite. The single was released in some European regions, and the United Kingdom only received a promo edition. The critical reception of the song was generally positive.

On 19 July 2011, the song was played as a wake-up call to STS-135 Space Shuttle Atlantis Pilot Doug Hurley as a tribute from his wife and family, marking the last ever wake-up call for a crew visiting the International Space Station from the Space Shuttle fleet.

(PO: Listening to this and Charlie Brown back to back and there is quite a lot of different present. Like Shiver, it has a distinct 'early Coldplay' sound about it, but its a lovely little song.)

Edited by Chez Wombat

Charlie Brown is Coldplay's worst song by far. What a lacklustre attempt at creating something that is memorable and anthemic.

"God Put a Smile upon Your Face" is a song by British alternative rock band Coldplay. It was written by all members of the band for their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head. The song is built around an acoustic and electric guitar sound, that accompanies it with uptempo drumming. The song was released in 14 July 2003 as the fourth single from A Rush of Blood to the Head.

Regional singles were released for Canada, Europe, Australia, and an enhanced version for Taiwan. Promo singles were released for the United Kingdom and United States. Since only promo copies were released, the single was only able to chart at number 100 in the UK.

(PO: I must admit that I found about this one mainly through the Mark Ronson version. Its slightly out of the ordinary for them, but its pleasant enough.)

15. Life In Technicolour II (Viva La Vida...)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/c9/Life_in_Technicolor_II.jpg/220px-Life_in_Technicolor_II.jpg

"Life in Technicolor II" (also spelled as "Life in Technicolor ii"), is a song by the British alternative rock band Coldplay and the first single from the band's 2008 EP, Prospekt's March. The song is the full, vocal version of the instrumental song "Life in Technicolor" from Coldplay's fourth studio album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. A promo CD single for the song was released in December 2008. The official single was released on 2 February 2009 on 7" vinyl and digital download. The single includes the previously unreleased and unheard track "The Goldrush", one of the few Coldplay songs featuring lead vocals by drummer Will Champion. It was nominated for two Grammy Awards for the 52nd Grammy Awards; "Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal" and "Best Short Form Music Video".

"Life in Technicolor II" starts with a loop consisting of a yangqin accompanied by tabla-like percussion. The loop is then repeated through the verses and part of the chorus.

(I really liked the original instrumental version of this, but I don't find the vocals really add much. Its good overall, but another case of 'there was better on the album')

14. Princess of China (Mylo Xyloto)

Average: 6.772

Highest Rate: 11 (popchartfreak)

Lowest Rate: 3 (RabbitFurCoat, richie, ▲▲▲)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/d/df/Coldplay_Princess_Of_China.jpg/220px-Coldplay_Princess_Of_China.jpg

"Princess of China" is a duet recorded by British alternative rock band Coldplay and Barbadian recording artist Rihanna for Coldplay's fifth studio album Mylo Xyloto. The song was written by band members Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion, and Chris Martin, along with Brian Eno, and draws influences from the music genres of electronic rock, electropop and R&B. The song was released as the fourth single from Mylo Xyloto and was sent to US Mainstream radio on 14 February 2012. It was later released as a digital download on 13 April 2012. A companion EP to the single, featuring an acoustic version of the song, was released on 1 June 2012.

"Princess of China" was met with a generally positive response from music critics, with some praising the collaboration between Martin and Rihanna, though others criticized it for being uninspiring. The song performed well on international charts around the world. The song peaked at number 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number four on the UK Singles Chart. It has also reached the top ten of the Australian and New Zealand charts and five other international charts.

The song's accompanying music video, directed by Adria Petty and Alan Bibby, was filmed in March 2012 in Los Angeles and released on 2 June 2012. The video depicts a complicated love story of Rihanna and Chris Martin, scenes of which include a sword fight and Rihanna imitating a multi-armed goddess. The video was met with positive reviews, with critics praising the Asian theme of the video. The song was performed live on the 54th Grammy Awards held at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

(PO: I think this is about the right position for this, Its too recent to be any higher. I do like this though, I was worried that they were 'selling out' a little bit when I heard that Rihanna featured on it and couldn't get into it for ages, but it did grow. Its actually quite a uniquely structured song and if it didn't feature a global superstar, one must wonder if it would've had anywhere near the same success. It wasn't something I expected them to pull off, but they did.)

13. Trouble (Parachutes)

Average: 6.840

Highest Rate: 11 (THEO)

Lowest Rate: 2 (Wall)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/e2/Trouble_cover_art.jpg/220px-Trouble_cover_art.jpg

"Trouble" is a song recorded by British alternative rock band Coldplay for their debut album, Parachutes. The band wrote the song and co-produced it with British record producer Ken Nelson. The song repeats the word "trouble" throughout the lyrics, and its musicscape is minimalist built around a piano.

The song was released on 26 October 2000 as the album's third single. It reached number 10 on the UK Singles Chart, making it the band's second Top 10 single in the country. Although "Trouble" failed to chart on the main singles chart in the United States, the music press deemed it almost as successful as its predecessor, "Yellow". Two different music videos for the single were released.

(PO: The Parachutes singles dropping like flies and it is a shame as they are still lovely listens - this though is something else. Led by a haunting piano and soft guitar, it stays in one pace throughout but doesn't need to go change. Gorgeous song throughout and a shining example of how good they are as balladeers.)

oh dear oh dear oh dear! Not only is Princess Of China my fave Coldplay record (Obviously just me thinking that!) it's my fave record of the 21st Century, period.

Pah! 14th. As if! The singles sales figures suggest otherwise.....

12. Fix You (X&Y)

Lowest Rate: 0 (Nick F1, Dandy*)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/9/93/Coldplay_Fix_You.svg/220px-Coldplay_Fix_You.svg.png

"Fix You" is a song by British alternative rock band Coldplay. It was written by all four members of the band for their third album, X&Y. The track is built around an organ accompanied by slow tempo drums and vocals. It was released on 5 September 2005 as the second single from X&Y and has reached number four on the UK Singles Chart. The song reached number 18 in the United States Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks. Promo singles were released for the UK and US.

Blythe Danner, the mother of Gwyneth Paltrow and mother-in-law of Chris Martin, stated in an interview in May 2012 that Chris Martin 'wrote the song Fix You for Gwyneth when her father died and I weep every time I hear it'.

"Fix You" received positive reviews. It has been widely sampled, with different covers and sounds. The song, itself, was nominated for multiple awards in the categories of Best Song Musically and Lyrically and Anthem of the Summer. The music video was garnered as a tribute to the 7 July 2005 London bombings. The guitar solo of "Fix You" is currently used as the player introduction at all of the National Hockey League's Montreal Canadiens' home games,[2] and during the three stars of the game selection after every Los Angeles Kings home win.

The song was played live to a motionless crowd at the Steve Jobs memorial/celebration-of-life event at Apple headquarters on 19 October 2011 in Cupertino, California.

(PO: YOU'RE ALL f***ING HEARTLESS  What is widely regarded as one of their greatest ever songs flounders outside the top 10 here, it was never lowly rated except for the two 0's and a few sporadic low marks but it never really took off. I suppose looking at it objectively, it has become rather overplayed and used too often over the years and what may be beautiful to some may sound formulaic and tired to others.

It is my favourite song of all time for definite, but I won't bore you all with what it means to me any further. It at least allows for an open contest.)

11. Yellow (Parachutes)

Average: 7.590

Highest Rate: 10 (Wall, Chez Wombat, HausofYeezus)

Lowest Rate: 4 (Grebo)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/9/9b/Yellow_cover_art.JPG/220px-Yellow_cover_art.JPG

"Yellow" is a song by British alternative rock band Coldplay. The band wrote the song and co-produced it with British record producer Ken Nelson for their debut album, Parachutes (2000). The song's lyrics are a reference to band vocalist Chris Martin's unrequited love.

The song was recorded in March 2000, and released in June that same year as the second single from Parachutes, following "Shiver", and the lead single in the United States. The single reached number four in the UK Singles Chart, giving the band their first top-five hit in the United Kingdom. Helped by heavy rotation and usage in promotions, the song thrust the band into massive popularity. "Yellow" has since been covered by various recording artists worldwide, and remains one of the band's most popular songs.

(PO: A bafflingly low position for undoubtedly the song that started it all for them. Thirteen years on, it has aged beautifully, its not big and boisterous and its not slow and meandering. It really has all the elements of Coldplay just right and remains a fantastic listen.)

I can't believe I'm actually typing entries for these two before the top 10. For Shame.

OK, let's see what you've put in the top 10!

10. Lost! (Viva La Vida...)

Average: 7.636

Highest Rate: 10 (Nick F1, Bré, Gezza, HausofYeezus)

Lowest Rate: 3 (richie)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/f/f8/Lost-Cover.jpg/220px-Lost-Cover.jpg

"Lost!" is a song by the British alternative rock band Coldplay. The band co-produced it with Brian Eno and Markus Dravs for their fourth album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends.

Several official versions of the song exist, including vocalist Chris Martin's separate recording with a piano accompaniment (known as "Lost?") which appears as a B-side for "Violet Hill", and a version that features American rapper Jay-Z (known as "Lost+") which appears on their 2008 EP Prospekt's March.

Although it didn't match the commercial success of the album's previous singles, the song was released on 10 November 2008 as the third official single (fourth overall) off the album to generally positive critical reviews. A live version was released via digital download following a performance of the band and Jay-Z at the 2009 Grammy Awards, spurring high digital sales and giving "Lost!" a new peak at number 40 in the United States. In the United Kingdom, it peaked at number 54 due to no physical release.

The accompanying music video to the single features a live performance of the band in the United States. Coldplay launched a contest through their website, in which fans submitted self-made music videos. The winning entries were posted on the band's website.

Canadian singer Lights has covered the song.

(PO: A very odd choice for top 10, but a welcome one. One of the strongest tracks from this album for sure - Its a 'lighters' anthem, but in a slightly different way than you may expect, which could describe a lot of the album in all fairness)
