January 5, 20178 yr DanG will post the next one...which manages to retain its dance number 1 for one of its weeks outside the top 40.
January 7, 20178 yr Author Angel City (feat. Lara McAllen) - Love Me Right (Oh Sheila) Date 2nd Nov 2003 6 Weeks Official Chart Run 11-11-20-28-37-43-63-x(2)-71-x (8 weeks) 5xVeWBWrBDU 'Oh Sheila' started off life as a 1985 single by American R&B band Ready for the World, which reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 yet could not replicate its success in the UK - reaching a low peak of #50. Angel City (Dutch DJ duo Hugo Zentveld and Aldwin Oomen) and British singer Lara McAllen covered the song in 1999, renaming it 'Love Me Right (Oh Sheila)' (although mentions of Sheila are replaced by the word 'sugar' in the lyrics) and was released in The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium; making the top 40 of the Belgian chart. Yet again, this is a case of the UK getting the release years afterwards as Data Records (Ministry of Sound sub-label) picked it up in 2003, and it was unlucky enough to spent two weeks at #11 where it would peak. It would also go on to make the lower end of the Billboard Hot 100. In the UK dance chart however it spends six weeks at #1, including a week where there were no dance songs at all in the top 40 (it seems impossible now, but back in late 2003 it did happen!!). Very dark times indeed. Angel City would make the UK charts three more times, with McAllen singing on all occasions. They will also make two more appearances in this thread as Dance #1s. But what if I were to ask how many original songs Angel City got into the chart. Well the answer to that is zero. Follow-up 'Touch Me (All Night Long)' (2004, #18) samples the lyrics of Cathy Dennis (1991, #5) which in turn is a reworking of Fonda Rae (1984, #49). Their next and biggest hit 'Do You Know (I Go Crazy)' (2004, #8) samples the lyrics of Michelle Gayle (1997, #6) and the instrumental of Robert Miles 'Children' (1996, #2). The final hit 'Sunrise' (2005, #9) covers Ashiva (2003, DNC). The song itself is a commercial organ house record, with its production not too dissimilar to that of Philip George's two UK chart hits from 2015 where the sub-genre enjoyed a brief renaissance. It would make an appearance on Angel City's only album; also titled 'Love Me Right' (2005, #44).
January 7, 20178 yr A fantastic song, remember this one on the radio at the time - love the ah -ah ahahahah vocal at the end of the chorus. As you say its sound would have been relevant still in 2015, bouncy sounding organ and piano instrumentation. In terms of Angel City's other songs I do like Do You Know (I Go Crazy) the vocal is good in that one and it is a decent update of Robert Miles' Children (as was Dot Rotten's Overload in 2012) :D .Touch Me is average and Sunrise I don't like it much. Not quite eurotrance or house, it just sounds like a generic 2010s EDM dancepop song, so I suppose it was ahead of its time  Unbelievable there was a week where no dance songs were in the top 40.
January 8, 20178 yr Angel City (feat. Lara McAllen) - Love Me Right (Oh Sheila) Yep this is a good one as was Do You Know. Didn't realise it was a cover!
January 8, 20178 yr Yep this is a good one as was Do You Know. Didn't realise it was a cover! I do like Lara McAllen's vocal on Do You Know (I Go Crazy), it is a bit Dannii Minogue. For such a Clublandy sounding song, a quick look on iTunes shows it seems to have been shunned by the Clubland albums which is weird.
January 8, 20178 yr Author probably because it was released on their rival label! AATW would often not include MoS releases in 'Clubland' or in some cases they'd use soundalike versions.
January 8, 20178 yr The next one on this list could be the most obscure one on the list at all...never heard it in its dance form prior to doing this list.
January 8, 20178 yr probably because it was released on their rival label! AATW would often not include MoS releases in 'Clubland' or in some cases they'd use soundalike versions. I thought (wrongly) that Clubland was owned by MoS
January 8, 20178 yr Author The Lost Brothers (feat. G Tom Mac) - Cry Little Sister (I Need U Now) http://chartarchive.org/artwork/20174-raw.jpg Date 14th Dec 2003 1 Week Official Chart Run 21-28-32-32-31-35-43-58-75-x (9 weeks) bB0YG9ACbi4 Here is what may well be the most forgotten dance #1 of the 2000s, I for one had no idea of it before this thread. Like many dance songs that charted around this time this was also a cover version; in this case that of Gerard McMahon (although he sings on this version too as G Tom Mac, which is also the name of his band). 'Cry Little Sister' was a gothic rock song originally recorded for the 1987 film 'The Lost Boys' (hence the name of the act the cover is credited to) and did not chart. The new version however is an upbeat trance song, and added 'I Need U Now' in parentheses. It missed the top 20 however it had good longevity, spending six weeks in the top 40 though that is mostly due to the lack of new releases around the Christmas/new year period. The Lost Brothers are British trio Harry Diamond, Keiron McTernan and Sergei Forster-Hall, who released only one single under this alias. They would return to the chart in 2005 with 'Falling Stars' (as Sunset Strippers), which was a significantly bigger hit; peaking at #3. We may well speak more about that later in this thread. McTernan and Forster-Hall would then go on to form My Digital Enemy who have produced club hits for years and are still active today, although no chart success would follow.
January 8, 20178 yr It is a very good track, I know the song quite well but whether that is from this or the original I don't know. I didn't know these were the same people as Sunset Strippers :o , it sounds nothing like Falling stars (I suppose its like the Chocolate Puma/Riva pair and the Jakatta/Joey Negro pair didn't sound anything like each other. Excellent longevity for 2003/early 2004 for a song that peaked at 21.
January 8, 20178 yr Author I didn't know these were the same people as Sunset Strippers :o ,Me neither until I researched it just now  On first listen it's quite a good song, though it doesn't really do anything different to the average trance song at the time.
January 8, 20178 yr I thought the Lost Brothers track would be a lot bigger at the time, particularly given 'Pretty Green Eyes' success and Radio 1 played it all the time (I think anyway!) Good track though. Doesn't seem to be available to stream/purchase anymore.
January 8, 20178 yr Actually I have found it on Amazon... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cry-Little-Sister-...y+little+sister
January 8, 20178 yr I had no idea Love Me Right made the US top 100! Shocking to think there was a week in 2003 with zero dance representation, no wonder I went off the genre so much in 2003, there was literally nothing around (I had very little access to more underground stuff at this time).
January 8, 20178 yr Me neither until I researched it just now  On first listen it's quite a good song, though it doesn't really do anything different to the average trance song at the time. Well it is trance and not trancepop anyway, and fewer trance songs were making the charts by this stage (although as we will see there is a bit of a revival in trance making the charts in early 2004)
January 8, 20178 yr I had no idea Love Me Right made the US top 100! Shocking to think there was a week in 2003 with zero dance representation, no wonder I went off the genre so much in 2003, there was literally nothing around (I had very little access to more underground stuff at this time). Even in 2004 there isn't a big lot of dance tracks making the top 40 (although quite a few of them that do, do make top 10). There are more making top 40 in 2005, but less making top 10 compared to 2004. Edited January 8, 20178 yr by 🚡🚟🍥-♨🎪🚘🎉🍥
January 8, 20178 yr We had Dizzee Rascal's first foray into dance in November 2003 (#23) vMVKBA8NXK4 Well ahead of its time, would have been massive in 2009.
January 8, 20178 yr Other songs making top 40 during Scooter, Ian van Dahl, David Guetta, Angel City dance number 1s https://youtube.com/watch?v=glS2LqT_ZSk #28 Paul Van Dyk Feat. Vega 4 - Time Of Our Lives Trance indie hybrid, this sounds somewhat familiar for some reason to me, I may have heard it before at the time #27 Underworld - Born Slippy Nuxx (2003) New edit of the classic 90s track done by Rick Smith of Underworld, much funkier than the original and I prefer it :D #31 Linus Loves ft Sam Obernik- Stand Back A good modern sounding progressive house track, ahead of its time, would have been big if it was released in 2009-2012. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1tFKSh1SBE #38 Music and You - Room5 ft Oliver Cheetham Similar style to their first song, not as good as the first one though. nearly made dance number 1, one place behind the #37 week of Angel City Edited January 8, 20178 yr by 🚡🚟🍥-♨🎪🚘🎉🍥
January 8, 20178 yr We are moving on to 2004 now, there were two big number 1 dance songs around the middle of the year that stylewise would define the way dance music that made the charts would mostly go over the next two years. With these two songs, it was a massive shift in popular dance music. Trancepop, although I mostly like it, did get rather tired by this stage, as demonstrated by two rather poor high pitched vocal examples in mid to late 2004. I wonder during this year of 2017 will we get a popular dance song or two that completely changes the type of popular dance music around for the next few years like it did in 2004 (or indeed happened in late 2006 with the rise of electro). Certainly the fact tropical house is getting tired sounding makes it more likely. Edited January 8, 20178 yr by 🚡🚟🍥-♨🎪🚘🎉🍥
