A new year and a new thread! And before we get down to business a few links and some background information......

The Irish chart is revealed online every Friday afternoon and covers sales between Friday and Thursday. Since the beginning of 2007 the main sales chart has included all physical and download sales as in the UK. The main charts are the singles chart (a Top 50), the artist albums chart (a Top 100), the compilation album chart (a Top 30) and the download-only chart (a Top 20). The first 3 of these can be found at www.irma.ie while www.chart-track.com carries the Top 50 singles, Top 75 Artist albums, Top 20 compilations and Top 20 downloads along with weekly commentaries. A weekly airplay chart is compiled by Neilsen but since the middle of 2008 this has been unavailable to the public. During 2009 IRMA also started publishing the Indie Album Chart - initially a Top 20 but this was reduced to a Top 10 after a couple of weeks and returning to a Top 20 again in April 2010 which has continued to publish.

Traditionally the Irish chart was broadcast on the national pop station 2FM (the Irish equivalent of Radio 1 in the UK!). From the beginning of 2FM back in May 1979 this was normally in the form of a 2 hour show though the format and days and times regularly changed. However at the start of 2010 the show was axed without explanation. For a while they continued to carry the charts on their website but a revamp of the site saw that feature removed. Even over the Christmas and new year holidays all that chart fans got was a 2 hour show on New Years Eve where they counted through the number 1 singles of the year adding the download chart and artist album chart no 1s of the week. That means that the only airing of the chart on Irish radio is the nightly broadcast of "Top 40 Oifigiúil na hÉireann" (Ireland's Official Top 40) between 6 and 8 pm on Irish language internet station Raidió Rí-Rá. The station's Website posts the Top 40 singles chart each week but there are no archives. The show is apparantly syndicated so if I find any online details for the stations carrying it I'll add them here.

For full archive charts from January 2000 onwards I would recommend the chart-track website as it contains all the weekly charts since then. The irma website seems to have added an archive section which can be found at http://www.irma.ie/charts_archive/overview.asp though this only seems to cover the Top 50 singles and artist albums of 2007 at present. The irma site also contains year end Top 20s since 2001. Also worth checking out is www.irishcharts.ie which contains a fully searchable singles database going right back to 1962 when the first recognised chart was compiled (though there was a Top 10 published regularly from 1959). It is restricted to Top 30 hits but seems to be updated on a regular basis. This site also contains various other facts and figures and does have a certifications section though this is rather limited in content. Sales info is extremely hard to come by for Ireland and the only details that seem to appear are those mentioned from time to time in the chart-track commentary. No certifications are published in Ireland until the entire list of possible certifications for the previous year been submitted and verified. This list is published only once a year and refers always to trade deliveries made up to the end of the previous calendar year. Therefore, the 2007 certifications were published in 2008 - the 2008 certifications were published in 2009 and the 2010 certifications won't be published until an unknown date later in 2011.

This takes time. Going by previous years it is typically March when the list is published. It could be (much) later, but it's unlikely to be earlier. They may forget about it and not publish it immediately when it is ready. But it will eventually be published. Please be patient. There is no point asking when the certifications will be known - but as soon as they are, they will be posted here.

Many pre-2000 singles charts were posted on the UKMix forums back in 2006. Links to these and other Irish chart related topics can be found below

As always I'll be posting an unformatted version of the charts around 6pm on Fridays which will be replaced over the weekend by a formatted version. During the last couple of years we've come to an agreement that some of the regulars on the thread may post the chart if they're around on a Friday afternoon and I will send them the formatted version to edit their posts when it is ready.

While this has worked really well there is still a problem with what you could call "fanbase" members. These are people who are fanatical about a particuar act who appear when that artist has a new release out and having found out their new chart positon decide to post the entire chart or parts of it. To try to prevent this I intend to post some kind of reminder on a Thursday evening - just a short statement asking them to hold back. I want to make it clear that that is the only reason I'll be posting it - so Irishguy and Cian feel free to post if you're able.

Lets hope 2011 will be a better year for music and a better year in general.

Hopefully a half decent No.1 as well to start the year off!

The new Irish charts will be posted here on Friday evening. If you want to see the charts before then they can be found at www.irma.ie or www.chart-track.ie. For newer readers there is an agreement that the full charts are posted on this thread by one of the regulars to allow a formatted version to be used throughout the year.

Chart Track Commentary

Rihanna Turns Up The Volume

Rihanna’s 2010 success story continues into the New Year, with ‘Loud’ taking a second week at No1 on the first Album Chart of 2011, and three tracks from the album still featuring in this week’s Top 20 Singles Chart.

Take That and The Script are non-movers at No2 and No3, but the highest climber this week is Plan B’s ‘The Defamation Of Strickland Banks’, up twenty-two places from No29 to No7, matching the albums previous peak position back in July 2010 thanks to the January sales. As is typical at this time of year, many of the previous year’s big-hitters see a revival in their fortunes, with Mumford & Sons, Florence & the Machine, Arcade Fire, Biffy Clyro, Lady Gaga and Cee Lo Green all making significant leaps back up the chart.

Matt Cardle takes a fourth consecutive week at No1 on the Singles Chart with ‘When We Collide’, heading a Top 10 virtually unchanged since last week. The Rubberbandits take a fourth week at No2 with ‘Horse Outside’ – the best-selling download for a fourth week in a row – while Rihanna & Drake hold at No3 with ‘What’s My Name’. After ten weeks in the Top 40 Ke$ha finally climbs into the Top 10, up from No16 with ‘We R Who We R’, and in quiet week there’s only one new entry in the Top 20: Tinie Tempah’s ‘Invincible’ (feat. Kelly Rowland) at No18.

Shaky Fan's Commentary

A slight surprise at the top of the Indie Artist Albums list as Two Door Cinema Club move to no 1 on their 43rd week in the chart. Tourist History entered at no 1 on its first week on sale but it hasn't been back since then despite the fact that it has never fallen lower than no 9 in that time.

I tried this last year for a while but this time hopefully I'll stick at it.... A running list of the no 1s of the year, I'm starting with this weeks chart as last weeks charts were announced on New Years Eve and covered the last sales week of 2010.

No 1 Singles of 2011

07th January Matt Cardle - When We Collide (4th week including 3 in 2010)

No 1 Downloads of 2011

07th January Rubberbandits - Horse Outside (4th week including 3 in 2010)

No 1 Airplay Tracks of 2011

07th January Katy Perry - Firework (4th week including 3 in 2010)

No 1 Artist Albums of 2011

07th January Rihanna - Loud (2nd week including 1 in 2010)

No 1 Compilations of 2011

07th January Now 77 (7th week including 6 in 2010)

No 1 Indie Albums of 2011

07th January Two Door Cinema Club - Tourist History (2nd week.. also spent 1 week at the top during 2010).

I'm actually amazed that Firework sold more than both California Gurls & Teenage Dream. I wonder would it have done this without the X Factor....
