The Saturdays - Work

United Kingdom #22
Ireland #21
Europe #68

Work" is the fifth single by English-Irish girl group The Saturdays. The pop song was written by Ina Wroldsen, Harry Sommerdahl and Kalle Engström. "Work" was released on 29 June 2009 as the final single from the group's debut album, Chasing Lights. The single was released by Fascination Records in the United Kingdom and Europe, while releasing the single in Ireland under the label of Polydor Records.

The song was released with a music video, which was filmed on 16 May 2009 at Shepperton Studios. The music video features a different beat to the single. The music video became the band's most viewed video (at the time of the release), and which took concept of the band's upcoming tour to be titled The Work Tour. "Work", kicked the tour off, by having clips of the music video, where they do the catwalk.

Critical Reception.

"Work" received generally positive reviews from pop music critics. In a review for Digital Spy, Nick Levine described the song as "sparky electropop" that has a "memorable chorus."[4] Later Digital Spy said of the video: "Adopting the classic girlband-in-a-warehouse theme, the ladies strut their stuff down a makeshift catwalk, tease the camera seductively and even attempt a few risqué dance moves. This video won't set the world alight with its dazzling originality, but it nicely complements a real thumper of a song." Jon O'Brien of Allmusic described the track as "muscular dance-pop" and compared it to the music of Rihanna. BBC Music wrote that "tracks like 'Work'...can be skipped in an instant and have 'filler' written all over."

PrincessF1 of Dooyoo compared the song to Kelly Rowland's song of the same name, by saying it was "very dancey". She later went onto say that the single sounded a bit like Dizzee Rascal's music. She later said "This is yet another song that to me doesn't stand out to me on the album there are deffinatly better tracks on the album surrounding it." Ciao! stated "I didn't really like it. I heard it a few days ago, however, and I was like 'oh my god! I love this song!'. So, therefore, I would say this song is the kind of song which depends on which mood you are in on whether you like it or not. Since, then I have heard a couple of times more, and sometimes I'm like 'I Love it!' and other times I'm like 'argh! it's so annoying!" He went on to say. "The song is very catchy and has somewhat of a 'girl power' feel to it, as it's quite 'loud'. It's a bouncy kind of song, which makes you just want to get up and dance up and down, which makes it a great song for a party. It has a real 'pop' sound to it

Buzzjack Reception

QUOTE(Jonjo @ Mar 7 2009, 06:36 PM) *
'Work' will be the song that actually sells the album, much like 'Issues' did, but I reckon this time it'll go Top 5! I'm quite confident with 'Work'...

QUOTE(Scherz @ Mar 8 2009, 01:42 AM) *
The video was shot before JCGE.
I think the fact they had everything ready for 'Work' was the main reason for a fifth single.
I guess they just tied the tour to the single, which is pretty smart of them if it's a success.
If it flops... disaster! laugh.gif

QUOTE(Scherz @ Mar 8 2009, 07:06 PM) *
They told us in December that Work/Lies was the next single, there was a video of them learning the new routine.
Lies was dropped and Work was scheduled for March.
If you watch the first Comic Relief video, Una says "Our manager said 'you're not releasing your next single in March anymore...'.
They also performed it at G.A.Y in January, where Vanessa confirmed it was the next single.
Plus, they said on their forum that they were shooting a video before they found out they were doing Comic Relief.
So the whole thing being a rumour is a load of BS laugh.gif.

QUOTE(Aidan @ Mar 15 2009, 08:53 AM) *
I must admit, Mollie's opening was really bad. sad.gif

QUOTE(On The Hustle @ Mar 15 2009, 11:52 AM) *
Mollie was really nervous opening the song you could tell because it was wobbly as well as off and i know this is sad but you could tell by looking into her eyes.

QUOTE(MissingYou @ Jul 6 2009, 06:44 PM) *
i hope they dont get dropped

QUOTE(Aled. @ Jul 11 2009, 01:24 AM) *
Yes, the chances of being dropped are very high. Its not like they've had a sell out tour, an album thats sold more than 300k and three singles sell over 200k. Wait...

My second fave on Chasing Lights behind Up (only the single edit, not that horrific album version) <3 Such a tune, shame it was their lowest peaking single up until What Are You Waiting For sad.gif

Interesting to see where this would have peaked had it been released after Issues!

It really is a shame.

Although, let's not forget it was mostly due to the delay in release, and later on, Michael Jackson drama.gif

'Work' is such a jam. Pop brilliance. wub.gif

It was still a good hit for them at the time and is remembered now! It had a decent chart run really, if it had been released a couple of sales years later it would probs be a lot closer to 200k. wub.gif

I think about 120k is good indeed, especially for its chart position.
