#100: Jamie xx ft. Young Thug & Popcaan “I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)”

This year Jamie Smith finally released his debut LP In Colour, which included Doctor Blind 2014 #1 “Sleep Sound” which was backed on a double-A with “Girl”. A further two new singles were released from it - the first in contention for biggest hit of ’15 - but at #100 we have the other, “I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)” which features American rapper Young Thug & Jamaican dancehall artist Popcaan, I love the beat and the sample but the rap just spoils it a little for me. Danish band Mew featuring the familiar sugary high vocals from Jonas Bjerre returned this year after a 6 year absence with sixth studio LP +/−; the biggest hit from it was “Satellites” which managed #10 and places 96th. Whilst it was a good year for Foals who managed to score their fourth #1 on my chart with “What Went Down” (maintaining their strike-rate of 1 chart-topper per album), they only managed one other hit “Mountain At My Gates” which is at #93. Having a much better year all-round were fellow Brits Everything Everything who not only secured their first #1 with “Regret” in June but achieved 4 Top 10 hits; all of which make the T100, and also scored the best overall performance on my chart of 2015 (49 weeks). Current single “No Reptiles” is at 97 having not completed its chart run as-yet.

There was a fourth Top 10 hit for Röyksopp following “Do It Again” (#1 of 2014), “Monument” and “Sordid Affair”, the wonderful vocals of Irrepressibles vocalist Jamie McDermott over a thumping bassline on “I Had This Thing” marked a fitting end becoming the final single from the groups final album The Inevitable End - it places 98th.

EOY debuts are made for Unknown Mortal Orchestra (“Can't Keep Checking My Phone” at 91) and Boxed In (“Mystery” at 95).

#084: Susanne Sundfør “Fade Away”

From the moment I first heard Norwegian singer/songwriter Susanne Sundfør’s towering vocals on 2013 Röyksopp single “Running To The Sea” I was captivated, and knew that I wanted to hear an album of her own work immediately. In February her sixth LP, Ten Love Songs came out nd “Fade Away” the lead-off single made #7 at the time and ranks 84th for the year. More success was to come with the singles that followed both making the Top 10 and therefore also featuring higher up in this countdown. It was a successful year once again for Florence + The Machine who managed to score 3 more Top 10 hits, the first of which “Queen Of Peace” was the third single to be taken from third album How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful and makes 86th - she also has two more to come. Dublin duo All Tvvins with the frenetic drums and Bloc Party sounding “Thank You” which impressed early in the year and just about made the Top 10. There is also arguably the biggest song of the year in Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk”, a celebration and unashamed nod to the electro-funk of early 1980s groups like the Sugerhill Gang - a 7 week number 1 on the UK singles chart - a peak of 3 here but suffering slightly due to the chart run split across 2014/2015 and listed 90th. There is some dance pop from Kathryn-Leigh Beckwith (aka Kitty Pryde) who at 21 years old was the youngest women to make the Top 5 this year when the trance-esque “Miss U” scorched to number 4 in January. Following on from Jon Hopkins Glaswegian Jon Cooper (aka Turtle) released the wonderful instrumental “Colours” in February and it rounds out this section at 81.

#080: The Maccabees “Marks To Prove It”

The Maccabees returned emphatically this year and in August achieved their first UK #1 album with Marks to Prove It - the energetic title track from which made #7 here and was the best performing of the 3 singles - the group have now been around for almost 10 years and continue to go from strength to strength. Daughter also returned this year after scoring a massive hit with “Youth” back in 2013, the lead single from Not To Disappear (due in January) was “Doing The Right Thing” - which addresses the sadness and devastating effects of dementia on loved ones. !!! (pronounced Chk, Chk, Chk) abandoned their punk roots and returned in the autumn with “Freedom ’15”, a six minute throwback to the funk and disco sounds of the 70s with Nic Offer (and guest vocalists Yolanda Harris Dancy and Taletha Manorasking) asking sarcastically 'Freedom!/ How's that working for you, baby?' over a pulsating groove- it places 79th. Major Lazer had a HUGE (...still to come) hit in 2015, here is the follow-up to it which features Ellie Goulding and is both her first Top 10 hit and placing on the EOY chart since 2013 (with “Figure 8”). “Powerful” managed to peak at #8 and ranks 75th. In this section we see the 2nd of 4 for Everything Everything (“Spring / Sun / Winter / Dread” at 77) and 2nd of 3 for Susanne Sundfør with recent hit “Accelerate” at 71.

Hi Doctor Blind catching up with the EOY,

#065: Kindness ft. Robyn “Who Do You Love?”

Australian singer/songwriter Courtney Barnett is at 70 with the first of three, the ironically upbeat “Dead Fox” - a highly political anthem in which Courtney speaks of her despair at the lack of care for the environment - a world in which she is reluctantly complicit in, and is one of many examples of Courtney's excellent lyricism on LP Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. Equally talented lyricist Kendrick Lamar makes his first and only appearance in the T100 with the excellent but angry anthem “The Blacker The Berry” at 69, taken from To Pimp a Butterfly. Robyn was at 94 with Bagatelle Magique on “Love Is Free” but her biggest hit of ’15 by far was her collaboration with UK producer Adam Bainbridge (aka Kindness) on “Who Do You Love?”. It peaked at #2 in January and the video highlighted the theme of the song by exploring how you can identify who you are by those you love. Pop perfection is provided by Swedish singer Tove Styrke on the powerfully addictive “Ego” at 62, and the indie contingent is handsomely represented by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds at 61, Mini Mansions (who teamed up with Arctic Monkeys’ frontman Alex Turner on “Vertigo”) placing 66th and fantastic grunge revivalists Wolf Alice at 63 with “Giant Peach”, the group have previously charted in 2013 and 2014 and finally released their debut My Love Is Cool this year.

#056: Hot Chip “Need You Now”

Tame Impala released one of my favourite albums of the year, the wonderful Currents - the centrepiece (and first single) around which the album was built upon will appear much higher up, but kicking off the Top 60 is third single “Eventually”, a breakup song which deals with the difficult choices we have to make when ending a long term relationship.. but that it is eventually for the best. Beck returned in style with brash and bold beats along with a killer hook-laden chorus which made “Dreams” an alternative summer anthem for 2015, especially with the guitar breakdown encouraging mandatory air guitar. Hot Chip scored 2 Top 5 hits off of sixth LP Why Make Sense?, the biggest of which is much higher but “Need You Now” with its excellent video features at 56. Unable to match the peak of 2013’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home” (#2), “Hotline Bling” nonetheless was a late summer smash and even though the backing melody sounds like the music that accompanies the Wii shop it still gets me every time I hear it - not his best, but a damn good R&B track. We finally have some more dance at 54, although the smooth melodies of Marius Lauber’s (aka Roosevelt) double A-side “Night Moves / Hold On” definitely has more elements of disco and pop.

In the Top 50 there are a couple of artists who have more than 1 track.. these are as follows:

Young Fathers 3

Courtney Barnett 2

Everything Everything 2

Florence + The Machine 2

Grimes 2

2

Public Service Broadcasting 2

There are also ALL 21 number 1s, that has never happened before!

Edited by Doctor Blind

This is a great start! both the Deerhunter/EE tracks, Jamie xx, Beck, Drake, Sufjan, Tame, Robyn, Health.... *.*

Hoping for high placings for the two remaining Grimes & Everything Everything tracks

#046: Grimes “Flesh Without Blood”

In this section we find the first number 1s to bow out and both suffer from their chart runs straddling either end of the year - Lxury’s “Pick You Up” (at 41) spent the first 3 weeks of 2015 at number 1 and Grimes the final 5. “Flesh Without Blood” - the sad and abrupt ending of a strong friendship set to a joyful and uplifting beat - ranks 46th but expect it to continue to dominate into 2016. “Pick You Up” was the superb cut from EP Into the Everywhere a funky house classic with a looped vocal that compliments its thumping beat and drives through the track. Courtney Barnett is at 45 with 2nd of 3 and the excellently titled “Nobody Really Cares If You Don't Go To The Party”, the singers ode to making-an-excuse-to-not-go-out (a good song to play on NYE!); it became her 2nd Top 3 hit of the year - the first is in the Top 40. Florence Welch also racks up her 2nd of 3 in this section with the towering “Ship To Wreck” at 43. Also in this section are promising debuts from Julia Holter with the sax heavy “Sea Calls Me Home” taken from the wonderful Have You in My Wilderness at 42, Paul Woolford (Special Request) who brought back the early 90s sound on 6-minute epic “Amnesia” at 44, and from 32 year-ild Kelela Mizanekristos whose “Rewind” was the upbeat club-ready lead single from recent EP Hallucinogen which it peaked at #2 in October. Finally, at 50 we have unknown British producer George FitzGerald - who since relocating to Berlin has been putting out occasional deep house EPs - “Full Circle” is a slightly more pop-leaning track featuring the vocals of Oli Bayston (aka Boxed In).

Hi Doctor Blind,

#034: CHVRCHES “Leave a Trace”

Into the Top 40 and some of the biggest hits of the year now - we start at 40 with the first of an incredible 3 entries in the Top 40 for Edinburgh’s Young Fathers. After receiving the Mercury for their acclaimed 2014 album Dead, the trio did not sit back and immediately released the provocative White Men Are Black Men Too. The first single from it continued in much the same way as non-album single “Soon Come Soon” (33 on this chart) in sounding very much like TV on the Radio but still combining their distinctive style of politics and a superb knack for an addictive melody from even the most aggressive beats. In many ways I preferred White Men Are Black Men Too to its predecessor and they do indeed have another single from it still to feature. The highest entry for Norwegian singer Susanne Sundfør is at 39 “Delirious” which sounds like a lost Bond theme and is every bit as dramatic - it peaked at #3 back in March. The Weeknd went all Michael Jackson on “Can’t Feel My Face” (37) and CHVRCHES continued much where they left off in 2013 with sugary pop vocals and uplifting melodies - “Leave a Trace” spent a fortnight at No. 2 and places 34th.

Andrew Ferguson and Matthew McBriar are the duo behind Bicep, and released “Just” in late summer which became a huge hit on my chart peaking at #4 but securing enough longevity to finish in the EOY Top 40 - the track is a simple but effective one that plays and builds the tension in the fantastic melody, yet never releases it, all the while a haunted deadpan vocal chants It's just the same - it places 35th in the countdown. Amongst the other dance hits of the year are Disclosure with legendary vocalist Gregory Porter and the first and only hit single from their rather disappointing follow-up Caracal entitled “Holding On” - there is also the excellent dance/pop entry and to-date only hit single from Samantha Urbani “1 2 3 4” at 32.

American producer Thomas Pentz, aka Diplo had a great year in collaborative group Major Lazer, scoring the most streamed track of 2015 with “Lean On”, making little known Danish singer/songwriter MØ a huge international star though this so far has not greatly helped her solo success. “Lean On” (a collaboration between Pentz, MØ and French music producer DJ Snake) was a classic slow-burner and despite peaking at 5 had by the summer spent 4 consecutive months on the chart which helps it to land at #23 and become both MØ and Major Lazer’s biggest hit of ’15. Both have two songs in the T100 and MØ’s other: the Indian pop flavoured “Kamikaze” sits two places lower at 25. Charli XCX scored her third chart topper after 2014’s “Boom Clap” and 2011’s “Nuclear Seasons” on her collaboration with X-Factor judge (and occasional singer) Rita Ora - “Doing It” was one of the first number 1s of the year and ranks 30th.

Ezra Furman released his third LP Perpetual Motion People this year and from it the insanely catchy and bluesy “Lousy Connection” was on repeat throughout the summer and sounded even better when I saw him live (prolonging the longevity of the single) and that's at 29. The biggest Courtney Barnett track of 2015 bows out at 24 - the playful “Pedestrian At Best” with its loud and raucous guitars served as the introduction to the wonderful lyricism displayed on Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit and it eventually went on to become a Top 3 hit. The biggest of 3 for Young Fathers also finishes here at 26, the cutting “Shame” with its fierce opening of Nothing but a bare face lie, is all you cunts can hold on to belied by its upbeat and catchy refrain.

#012: Public Service Broadcasting “Go!”

The Top 20 features 15 number 1s, 9 of which make the Top 10 - of the tracks to not make number 1 - we first have a long overdue reunion and return for the Libertines who split in 2004 amongst the backdrop of Pete Doherty’s sad and tragic fall into drug addiction. Unsurprisingly given it was the first thing that they wrote once reuniting in 2014, “Gunga Din” (at 20) is hugely self-referential and full of self-loathing as Carl and Pete reflect on their tumultuous relationship. Next at 19 is “Distant Past”, which with its huge chorus refrain of frontman Higgs pleading Take me to the distant past, longs to return to a much simpler time without the human conflict, division and violence we have today. At 18 we have the French electronic musician Jean-Baptiste de Laubier, who called upon the South African Youth Choir to vocalise the funky, vocally driven house track “Elevation” which peaked at 2 in September and sits 18th in the list. The 2nd highest song to not peak at #1 comes from Public Service Broadcasting - who actually have two in the Top 20. “Go!” is a brilliant celebration of the human achievement and the space exploration that began in earnest in the late 50s and early 60s featuring original samples taken from NASA during Apollo 11’s successful mission to reach the moon. Another mission, Apollo 8 is covered in the equally brilliant “The Other Side” where the tension of the accompanying music matches impressively that felt when the shuttle loses radio contact from the ‘other side’ of the moon.

Massive #1s are also here in the form of pop perfection from the inviting sax intro of Carly Rae Jepsen’s brilliant “Run Away With Me” at 11, and Shura’s captivating “White Light” at 15. Jack Garratt has been compared to James Blake and you can certainly see why on debut “The Love You’re Given”, with its subtle beat complimenting his soft vocals and featuring a Blake-esque warped, percussive breakdown. Whether after receiving the Critic’s Choice Award for 2016 he goes on to achieve mainstream success remains to be seen.. Not mentioned so far are Blur’s brilliant return “Lonesome Street” and Manchester based Julie Campbell (LoneLady) with the fantastic “Silvering” where she emulates the guitar work of Talking Heads to great effect.

#010 Everything Everything “Regret”

Debut: 3rd May 2015

CR: 38-22-12-06-04-04-02-01-02-05-07-12-19-26-38-50 (16 weeks)

My highlight from one of the albums of the year Get to Heaven was “Regret”, which underneath its inescapably catchy melody encapsulates the immense power of the individual, and where Higgs seeks to understand the disenfranchised who are driven to fight for a cause that is neither coherent or in their best interest. Never has geo-political commentary sounded quite this good.

#009 Tame Impala “Let It Happen”

Debut: 15th March 2015

CR: 38-23-14-09-04-03-02-03-06-10-15-25-36-43-XX-42-33-28-35-40-45-48-48 (22 weeks)

The emotional centrepiece for Currents was the lead-off 7 minute epic “Let It Happen” which opens up the themes of the album about embracing and accepting change - which Kevin Parker et al certainly did on their third LP. In much the same way that the Horrors standout “Still Life” sounds like a forgotten classic that has been around for decades “Let It Happen” endures repeated listens and will undoubtably be looked back on as a classic.

most of these I don't know but there are a few greats in here, particularly loving 'Lean On', 'Holding On', 'Hotline Bling', 'Amnesia' (great BJSC discovery!!), 'Uptown Funk', '2 On' and 'Kamikaze' so far.

#008 Hot Chip “Huarache Lights”

Debut: 15th February 2015

CR: 31-14-05-02-01-01-01-03-05-08-12-18-25-31-38-47 (16 weeks)

Along with “Need You Now” one of the few great songs from their slightly disappointing sixth LP Why Make Sense?. “Huarache Lights” shares the name of a particularly trendy pair of Nike trainers and represents the songs theme of the creeping fear and depressing inevitability of growing old and becoming irrelevant (or replaced by the things that do the jobs better as all fads eventually do. They've lost none of the wit and panache executed on debut single “Over and Over” and I'm pleased that despite growing old they haven't been replaced yet.
