To say Fall Out Boy sold-out with their last album is an understatement, but for a short while I found the title track irresistibly catchy. It's fast-paced and shouty which is enough to get your adrenaline going and make you sing along. Next is Florence + the Machine with their most successful song in the charts this era, 'Ship to Wreck' - despite it just scraping the Top 20, this had big staying power in my chart, thanks to the joyous folk-inspired melody and Florence's soaring chorus vocals that contrast with the lyrics of self-destruction, breaking the things you love most. Following the somewhat underwhelming 'Poison', Rita Ora went full-out R&B and hooked up with Chris Brown to release what proved to be her forte - I adore the likes of 'I Will Never Let You Down' but the cool sultry sounds of 'Body On Me' really bring out the best of Rita's soul vocals. I only got into 'The Hills' after it took off, mainly because the snippets I had heard suggested this would be far too urban for my tastes, but I couldn't be more wrong. The production is dark and mysterious; almost like something from a horror film, and compliments the subject matter of lust and drugs. Then the middle 8, my favourite part, completely throws you in a different direction with The Weeknd's angelic, floaty vocals. Final song of this bunch is 'Friends' by Raury - who unbelievably is only a year older than I am. He hooks up with Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello to sing a simple song but with an important topic of appreciating all aspects of the world and standing united to spread a message of love, hope and peace.

Thanks for commenting! Glad you love 'Friends' too; it was due to Radio 1's support that made me like it so much. On first listen, it sounded lovely but it took several listens to realise how much I liked it. It seems odd Tom Morello plays the guitar on the track because I just associate him with Rage Against the Machine and 'Killing in the Name'!

BRING THIS ON. Here for Madge <3

The queen will slay.

095 | 208 | 208 Cheryl - Only Human 08

094 | 209 | 209 Taylor Swift featuring Kendrick Lamar - Bad Blood 08

093 | 209 | 209 Marina and the Diamonds - FROOT 05

092 | 584 | 214 Paolo Nutini - One Day 04 (01 in 2014)

091 | 215 | 215 Selena Gomez featuring A$AP Rocky - Good for You 07

It's typical that one of Cheryl's most heart-felt songs would flop whilst the two good-but-heard-it-all-before singles from this era hit #1. It was nice to hear this side of her again, particularly as I'm a big fan of 'The Flood'. The production picks up at all the right places and the slight-vocoder effect actually enhances the emotion that you can already hear in Cheryl's voice. The first of four Taylor Swift singles now - 'Bad Blood' was initially a bit underwhelming: it felt like it lacked the pop hooks of her previous singles and it seemed odd Kendrick Lamar was so dominant on what is meant to be a Taylor Swift song. It remains bottom of the pile of 1989 singles, but it did end up growing on me because I realised both how great the chorus is to sing along to and how wise of a decision it was to add Kendrick given the song does have a slightly urban feel to it anyway. Marina and the Diamonds appeared to take lessons from Lana Del Rey in regards to releasing a tonne of songs all at once with no indication as to what the current single was, but 'FROOT' stood out to me. It has that same je ne sais quoi that the likes of 'Primadonna' and 'Hollywood' had in the sense that every moment of the song is magical, not just the chorus or not just a verse etc. Paolo Nutini's 'One Day' - a #1 for me in 2014 - charted way into 2015 too as it is just so captivating from the moment the blues-y production kicks in. Every listen I'm just transfixed on Paolo's raw, throaty vocals as he knows exactly what to do with them at the right place and right time to just evoke huge amounts of pain and emotion. Last of this bunch is another female pop star and rapper hook up, this time in the shape of Selena Gomez and A$AP Rocky who created this sexy slow-R&B number which certainly opened the doors to a new audience. This song is so stylishly done that it doesn't feel weird that a once-Disney-goody-two-shoes is singing about being provocative; it's just a young girl maturing into a young lady and learning to embrace and celebrate herself.

Only Human was such a refreshing change for Ms Tweedy-Cole-Fernandez-Versini, I've played it quite a lot (compared with a sum total of 0 plays for anything else from that shitty album).

Loads of great songs so far Liam! Good For You was such a welcome change for Selena as much as I loved her beforehand. It's slick and well produced, and her subtle vocals work so well in contrast with that production. Deservedly her biggest hit in the UK!

Only Human flopping was disappointing to see, radio just weren't here for it :(

Refreshing is definitely the word - like I say, I enjoyed the preceding two singles for what they were but they're among her weakest for being rather faceless.

Nothing noteworty yet LiLi :(

:( Tbf, you wouldn't expect any Kylie/Madge to be this far down the countdown. ;)

I agree with all that. It was just perfect in changing her image and sound respectively without dragging the focus away from the music.

I think the record team should have pushed 'Only Human' much earlier, perhaps even in December since 'I Don't Care' was slipping down the chart. Probably wouldn't have been that much of a hit but certainly better than it did. The time they did choose to have it as single #3, it was far too late as the era was practically over by that time.

Hi Liam,

All Amazing :D

Thanks Harry! :D

Froot really took me by surprise, absolutely loved it and for sure one of my faves of hers.

Yeah, I think I rank it up there with one of her best. Tbh all the singles I've heard have been great tracks with solid pop hooks and melodies.

090 | 215 | 215 BØRNS - Electric Love 05

089 | 347 | 217 Iggy Azalea featuring MØ - Beg for It 16 (09 in 2014)

088 | 219 | 219 Calvin Harris featuring HAIM - Pray to God 13

087 | 219 | 219 Ella Eyre - Together 12

086 | 221 | 221 Everything Everything - Regret 12

Reviving glam rock with the HAIM-esque 'Electric Love' is BØRNS who seems to effortlessly kill it with that soaring vocal in the chorus. I had hoped it would have taken off but he remains little-known for now. Another artist with the Scandinavian vowel in their name is MØ who featured on Iggy Azalea's lead from her re-issued debut album (or at least it was the lead until it flopped and was quickly swept under the carpet). 'Beg for It' was very much a 'Fancy' rehash (helps that MØ's parts were written by Charli XCX and they in fact sound like her too) but that was a winning formula so I can accept one other attempt. Since Calvin Harris stuck to just producing, I've found his best songs are usually the ones where he takes an artist who you wouldn't associate with dance music and makes it sound like the song could easily fit in their own discography. This was definitely the case when HAIM featured on 'Pray to God' - those opening chords are SO them and the sisters' voices are always at the forefront; the instrumental in the chorus doesn't become the main attraction to the song unlike some other Calvin songs do. Ella Eyre returned to the drum and bass sound of 'Waiting All Night' with 'Together' - usually this genre is very same-y regardless of who the artist is and that remains the case here, but it helped that I was a big fan of Ella's previous music. Everything Everything appeal to me for their quirkiness and sometimes bizarre take on pop music, but it is perhaps mostly so in the song 'Regret' which is strangely reminiscent of 60s girl groups! It works super well though but most Stuart Price productions do.

085 | 632 | 226 Sia - Big Girls Cry 06 (06 in 2014)

084 | 228 | 228 Ariana Grande - Focus 01

083 | 236 | 236 Ellie Goulding - Army 03

082 | 236 | 236 Tame Impala - 'Cause I'm a Man 02

081 | 382 | 237 Ariana Grande & The Weeknd - Love Me Harder 11 (02 in 2014)

Sia's album 1000 Forms of Fear has already cemented itself as one of my favourite albums and, despite the high standard of the whole album, 'Big Girls Cry' still manages to shine out on its own. It deals with the misconception that people in the spotlight must be perfectly content with their lives - the reality is that it can be a lonely and often unfulfilled place, but Sia also recognises it's okay to deal with this sadness; that you don't need to live up to this "big, tough girl" persona that the media dresses you up as. Not forgetting to mention the gorgeous piano melody and Sia's perfectly imperfect vocal display. The last song to hit #1 in 2015 in my chart was 'Focus' by Ariana Grande. I wasn't too keen at first of her essentially doing a rehash of 'Problem', which I also wasn't initially a fan of, but it had a huge turnaround after hearing it in the clubs. Everything about it is so undeniable and just the clanging percussion at the start is enough to get me overcome with excitement for what's to come. I'm aware people much prefer the US single 'Something in the Way You Move' (which, for the record, I adore and want it released here too) but Ellie Goulding's recently confirmed UK single 'Army' is deserving of some love too. The song's structure certainly draws parallels with 'Love Me Like You Do' (why fix what ain't broke?), as do the lyrics in terms of the subject being an indomitable, one-of-a-kind figure but, whilst the latter describes that of a love affair, the former is of a solid friendship; a soul mate who is there to make you laugh, be a shoulder to cry on, and make you feel like you could take on the world. Tame Impala parked their 60's psychedelic for a moment to unleash their inner R&B with ''Cause I'm a Man', which I feel was a very rewarding move. The dreamy falsetto makes the lyrics somewhat inaudible (they're worth a read though: a self-reflection of his actions that are concluded to be partly down to human nature) but it doesn't matter when the sounds do the talking. Ariana appears again with her sexy R&B jam 'Love Me Harder' with The Weeknd. The lyrics show no illusions that this is about lust and sex yet it doesn't feel sleazy or dirty, perhaps I'm just too distracted by the hip-swaying sultry grooves that make me wanna list on repeat.
