Germany’s broadcaster NDR has just presented its new selection format for the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest which goes back to 2010’s winning formula. Successfully selected through this process, former winner Lena is joining as a jury member.

Since the change of its national final back in 2013, Germany’s results at the contest have been below the expectations. In order to get back on the right track, the broadcaster NDR re-activates its old selection format according to a press release.

In a first step, young German singers are able to apply via www.unsersong2017.de, by sending a video which shows their talent. Selected out of the crowd, the 30 most promising young men and women are going to be invited to sing in front of the jurors who are finally choosing the 5 competitors for the national final.

On February 9th in a live show, the singers are presenting songs which have been submitted by international songwriters exclusively for this competition. The jury, consisting of the musicians Lena, Florian Silbereisen and Tim Bendzko will comment on the different performances while the winner is only going to be selected through televoting and the official Eurovision app. In this way, the German selection will go international for the first time, permitting also international Eurovision fans to vote for their favourite.

Eurovision winner Lena encourages all young men and women to take part, declaring that it could be the best decision of their lives, changing everything.

Interesting that international voting will be taking place, it's worked great for Latvia the past 2 years!

And they are finally moving back towards 2010-12 which worked so well for them. Lena'a on the jury and Raab's team is producing it - I have very high hopes!

Good news, they really looked to be turning a corner at the start of the decade but after Cascada's unfair flop they've just completely lost it again.

Another year, another German scandal!

Their five finalists were announced the other week but now one has pulled out due to personal circumstances, he has apparently been charged with theft and other things and therefore feels the "time isn't right" for him to take part. He has been swiftly replaced by a Swedish Idol alumni...

(4 girls and 1 guy now in this final, I think we can predict who will win!)

Germany's format is all a bit of a state again this year, the multi-round, 2 songs, may not get to perform songs mess of a format is back in one way or another:

That said, this is the NF I'm probably most excited for outside of MF and Eesti Laul!

Oh Germany. A country so ruthlessly efficient yet their ESC selection always seems to have the same structural integrity as a Chocolate Teapot.

It is only an "advisory" vote rather than actually counting towards the result but it's better than nothing! (Unless that has changed, I haven't seen the video!)

In other news Ruslana is one of the guest performers so suddenly the 3 hour show makes sense!

You'll have to forgive me, I thought advisory votes were took as the concrete will of the people. Unless that logic only applies to future generations and not song contests of course.

Voting
The result will be decided using public televoting alone. International fans can vote now via the official Eurovision app and the international vote results will be presented during the show to advise the German televoters. An in-studio jury consisting of Florian Silbereisen, Lena and Tim Bendzko will also be giving their opinions but have no voting power themselves.

The Favourites
All we have to go on at this stage are Twitter and forum reactions to the clips revealed on the Eurovision app for international viewers to vote on. Early favourite seems to be Axel Feige, most likely with 'Perfect Life'. Also a possible contender is Felicia Lu Kürbiß who arguably has the biggest fanbase heading into the show, albeit only on a scale comparable to Lucie Jones having a fanbase in comparison to Salena Mastroianni. Felicia's most favoured song seems to be 'Wildfire'. Isabella Levina Lueen is popular across Eurovision forums with her version of 'Perfect Life'. It seems these three are favourites to progress to round two.

While you are waiting for the show you should read this article, an insight into Germany's history in the Eurovision Song Contest and how their selection methods have changed over the years!

I've listened to the clips via the Eurovision app, I predict the following will happen at this stage:

Axel, Felicia Lu and Helene will progress from round 1. Axel obviously stands out being the only male against 4 fairly similar females. Felicia Lu has a Lena/Amy Macdonald vibe that will have its fans and Helene is the token country act which will be her selling point. The other two don't seem to have that USP and therefore I don't think their covers will be enough to get them through.

I think we'll lose Helene in round 2 as 'Wildfire' suits Felicia the best. Axel will still be sailing through as the only male and he has a good, strong voice. His stage presence is very lacking though.

Round 3 will be won by Axel as 'Perfect Life' suits him the best and will be the song chosen for him to go into the final round with. I doubt he'll manage to get both of his songs through, unless he's winning every round by a total landslide, so I imagine Felicia will get through with 'Wildfire'.

Final round will then be reminiscent of Andreas Kummert vs Ann Sophie, presumably without the drama at the end! Axel will win with Perfect Life is my pre-show prediction, and the reaction on social media is only strengthening my feelings. My personal stand-out is Felicia's 'Wildfire'.

Well, Germany may have last place sewn up here!

I've spent half an hour listening to all five versions of both songs (all on Spotify now) and they're not particularly inspiring.

Both sound like Taylor Swift demos from 2009 (Perfect Life reminds me of White Horse).

Yosefin and Isabella are incredibly dull, worse than most of the songs in the UK NF. Helene's slight country edge is a marked improvement and Felicia Lu brings both songs into 8/10 entry with her Lena-esque voice and the strings on Perfect Life even push it close to a 9/10. Axel's versions are certainly different to the others, but also horrible.

The main problem is that both songs are dated album filler that aren't immediately catchy, not really a recipe for winning over the televoters and the tracks aren't especially jury friendly either. I can see whatever is sent here going the way of Black Smoke and picking up points here and there but coming out with a very low combined score (though perhaps not nil points).

I'm really missing turn of the decade Germany right now sad.gif
