Only seen three of these (I actually own Changeling and think the plot looks pretty interesting but haven't had time to put it on yet ). Anyway, here's how I'd rank them:
1 Meryl Strep "Doubt" 2 Kate Winslet "The Reader" 3 Anne Hathaway "Rachel Getting Married" They were all very good but Meryl just edges it for me, it is one of my favourite roles of hers - the ending with the 'I have such doubts' is one of my favourite Meryl acting moments *-* Kate was a deserving winner in The Reader too but it's weird that this is the one that actually won her the Oscar when she's way better in stuff like Eternal Sunshine and Sense & Sensibility, she nailed the accent though! Anne was good too but I'm glad she held off until Les Mis to snatch the win because that is one hell of a performance, she did emotional scenes very well in this though too! Sally Hawkins was a big snub for me though, she embodied everything that a character like Poppy should be and balanced humour and more melancholy emotions so well. That was a star-making performance and she really should've been recognised outside of just the Globes Meryl was, of course, amazing in Mamma Mia but I'd have picked her for Doubt over this and there are rules against being nominated twice in the same acting category so I guess that was never going to happen. I bet she'd be able to pull it off if it was in a different year though - I mean, she's much better in MM than she is in stuff like Into the Woods and Florence Foster Jenkins and she bagged nominations for those. |

This was a BLOODBATH, so many strong performances.
Personally I think I would have preferred Anne to take the win. Like you say, Kate gives a strong performance but she's given better IMO. Anne was better here than she was in Les Mis so while I'm glad both have an Oscar, it was for the wrong movies. Meryl was superb in Doubt, one of her best. Sally Hawkins is way too overlooked, she deserved a nod for this tbh. Emma Thomson was really good in Last Chance Harvey and maybe deserved an Oscar nod. I've not seen Changeling or Frozen River though, so can't say if Emma was better. This post has been edited by Shaphne: 21st August 2017, 02:06 PM |

This was such a strong year! I would have picked Kristin Scott Thomas over Melissa Leo though, as her performance was so harrowing and one of my favourites that year.
I agree with Josh that Sally Hawkins was deserving, her performance in Happy Go Lucky! is so heartwearming and emotionally charged at the same time - probably one of my favourite characters in the last decade! I'm a HUGE Winslet fan and she SHOULD have already won the Oscar for Little Children and Eternal Sunshine as she even more MIND BLOWING in those, even though Helen Mirren and Hillary Swank were very deserving in both years. I adore the perfomances Hathaway and Streep gave that year, they were close runners up for me. I actually would have prefered Winslet to win for Revolutionary Road in this category and win for The Reader in the supporting category, to repeat the Globes |
