We're midway through the year, which means it's time to see how my views have changed on my Top 20 from last year. Here they are as a reminder:

1 Amy Shark - I Said Hi

2 Owl City - Lucid Dream

3 Snow Patrol - Don't Give In

4 Rudimental - Toast To Our Differences

5 HUMAN - ROBOT

6 Mahmut Orhan & Colonel Bagshot - 6 Days

7 Wallows - These Days

8 Suzi Island - Show Me The Way

9 Built by Titan - Broken Love (ft. Starxs)

10 Lukas Graham - Not a Damn Thing Changed

11 Vance Joy - We're Going Home

12 The Fratellis - Starcrossed Losers

13 Ofenbach - Paradise (ft. Benjamin Ingrosso)

14 Tom Odell - If You Wanna Love Somebody

15 Rasmussen - Higher Ground

16 The Struts - Body Talks (ft. Kesha)

17 Dean Lewis - Be Alright

18 AJR - Burn the House Down

19 Lukas Graham - Love Someone

20 Only Sun - What a State

I did hint during my EOY that the format would be different this year, however I have decided to stick to tradition and do it the way I've always done it. However, I will be paying homage to my favourite songs which missed out on the Top 20 as well as the main reshuffle this year.

Feel free to predict and hype away!

So, to start us off I'm going to go through my favourite 10 songs in my Top 100 which didn't make the Top 20 (so basically '21-30').

 30 [34] Axwell /\ Ingrosso ft. ROMANS - Dancing Alone

This could potentially be a little higher if it hadn't been pouring down with rain over the past week and I'm sure it'll sound great on my holidays but this has held up nicely, and the fact that ROMANS has had two Top 40 hits of his own makes me appreciate him more as a vocalist. This remains the last chart hit on the scorecards for the Swedish pair.

 29 [37] The Rubens ft. Sarah - Never Ever

Whilst the expletives in this continue to make me cringe, I still want to sing pretty much the entire song - the vocals are so powerful and the instrumentation is done in such a way that it maximises the earworm-i-ness of this little ballad. Both artists remain one-hit wonders on my Personal Chart, but what a hit it is.

 28 [31] Editors - Cold

This has climbed more due to the fact that other songs haven't held up as well more than anything else, but I have to give this some credit for sticking around in the Top 10 for a good few months and even giving the Christmas onslaught a good run for its money. Still yet to hear the new Editors song but the fact it's called 'Frankenstein' doesn't particularly fill me with hope.

 27 [23] AJR - Come Hang Out

There's something about AJR that makes me dislike them but then at the same time love all their songs. This falls a bit but maintains its position in the Top 30, which I didn't think it would do but on listening back to it it sounds just as fresh as it did back when I first heard it. They're yet to better this.

:right: 26 [26] Drones Club - Raise It Up

Probably used to being a non-mover with its ridiculous amount of time in the Top 100, this remains a dance smash despite all the plays it got last year.

 25 [29] Only Sun - Song For Leila

From one long-runner to another, this indie-pop bop remains as catchy as ever. After releasing a song a month last year they appear to be taking a break but here's hoping for some new tunes soon!

 24 [21] Ikson - Paradise

Another long-runner here, and the holder of the most weeks in my Top 100. Genuinely thought this would plummet on this chart but it's actually held up quite well and the melody is to die for, even if it is a little repetitive!

 23 [24] Suzi Island - Actor

Suzi Island's second big hit, this one having a message and being about female body stereotypes which makes me think it would have been more suited to a BJSC audience. Oh well, if you haven't heard it it's your loss because it still sounds amazing.

 22 [28] The Wombats - Turn

Again, don't condone the foul language towards the end but this is still a tune - really bringing indie into 2019 which is what we're so craving for as indie fans and it's not tired on me one bit.

 21 [30] Embrace ft. Kerri Watt - Never

This finished criminally low in my EOY last year, really deserved better and I can see that now, hence the leap into the highest non Top 20-reserved spot. I have so much more respect for Embrace now than I did, this song single-handedly brought me back to them and I really hope they release more music like this as it's such a perfect song, and quite a bit better than some of the songs that made the Top 20 last year.

Let's get this started!

 20 [17] Dean Lewis - Be Alright

Before I begin, I have to say that this Top 20 is one of the strongest I've had to judge, and it does feel harsh putting this in last. However, one song has to get the wooden spoon, and this time it's our mainstream song of 2018. It's not a bad song by any means, and I certainly still feel emotional when the chorus kicks in. However, I think that the fact that this song did get onto the radio means I've heard it more than some of the others, taking away a little bit of the power. His other singles haven't had the power of this, meaning that Dean only has this song to rely on in my head, although I was pleased to see Stay Awake sneak a Top 100 place officially.

 19 [18] AJR - Burn the House Down

This was the tip of the iceberg for AJR in terms of my chart history, as they've gone a little downhill from here. The thing is, whilst this song is incredibly catchy, I have to say I don't particularly like AJR. There's something about them which annoys me, and whilst they've continued to smash in my chart, it certainly has an impact. Opposing what I said earlier, this is on par with Come Hang Out, but the fact that Burn the House Down is such a perfect song - which easily sailed to 4 weeks atop my chart - irritates me a little.

 18 [16] The Struts - Body Talks (ft. Kesha)

Another act here who have failed to match their debut (although In Love With A Camera was an earworm for a short time), before I went through my listen-through I though this would be higher than where it is. I mean, it's incredibly catchy, a sort of indie-swing that I've not heard before or since, and the number of times it rebounded in my chart was insane. However, I just didn't feel the emotion I expected to feel when I listened to it. Maybe it's the fact that it hasn't really had six months rest thanks to the number of times I wanted to listen to it again, but somehow it's worn off on me. Hopefully in another six months' time it'll be right back up there.

 17 [15] Rasmussen - Higher Ground

Whilst this has fallen a few places, I genuinely thought this could be a contender for last place. I mean, it's just a slow Eurovision song, isn't it? Why were you so obsessed with it? After giving a listen, however, I was converted once again. This is such a magical song, and Rasmussen (who I've recently discovered is one guy instead of a group) really knows how to create a captivating track. His follow-up was nice but nothing special, meaning we have yet another one-massive-hit artist here.

 16 [19] Lukas Graham - Love Someone

And we finish off our first quartile with our first climber! And, surprise surprise, it's Lukas. This year I did sort-of feel that this song's chart run is purely a result of this being the comeback single, and yes, that is part of it, but listening to it now they're firmly back there's so much more in it. From the twangy guitar, to his amazing voice, to just the melody itself, this was certainly the right choice of track to return with (even almost cracking the Top 100  )

'Higher Ground' is my fave of your top 20 so far, so of course that's slipping a few places.

As I said it still remains a solid song, it's just how well the songs below it have held up! Thanks Dan :D

 15 [20] Only Sun - What a State

This is a song which could quite happily have stayed at #20 had I not bothered to listen to it, but whilst it doesn't bring back any memories so to speak it remains a solid track, causing it to jump up into the second quartile! By far the best of Only Sun's work (who have actually released a new song this week :o ), whilst it might not be the best song in this list musically it remains an earworm and a brill indie track.

 14 [13] Ofenbach - Paradise (ft. Benjamin Ingrosso)

Commentary

This one's slightly odd as I'm still firmly of the opinion that Katchi is the better song and so this getting to #1 whilst that stalled at #4 is a little weird to look at. Having said that, Ofenbach's charm is still on this, and Benjamin altered his vocals to make them actually sound quite good for the song. Now that the sun's shining I suspect I'll listen to this a bit more again as well. Whilst it's fallen a place, that doesn't particularly relate to anything much in the end. Mr. Ingrosso is yet to release anything else listenable, whilst Ofenbach recently released an album full of tunes which littered my Top 100.

 13 [14] Tom Odell - If You Wanna Love Somebody

Swapping places with Ofenbach we have the biggest entry over the last few years from Tom. I repeat my remark from last year that the swearing kind of taints what is otherwise a really happy, joyful song, but it's certainly held up well and whilst it's not particularly a song that I immediately think of when remembering the music of 2018 it's certainly one of those feel-good tracks which you can't help but enjoy. More please, Tom!

 12 [10] Lukas Graham - Not a Damn Thing Changed

At the time of my EOY I thought that this was very lucky to make the Top 10 (I'd taken the maximum 300 points off of it in the point tally) and fully expected this to drop to #20, but after hearing it again it's just remained such a solid song! Nothing like Love Someone, this one is a lot more gritty and goes back to his not-so-great childhood but his amazing voice shines through and makes this song such a joy to listen to. It had fallen out of the Top 10 but only because some amazing songs have climbed in.

 11 [12] Built By Titan - Broken Love (ft. Starxs)

And just slipping out of my Top 10 is my BJSC winner, Broken Love (remember when I actually used to qualify for BJSC?). I do think this song's success was certainly helped along by its win, however it remains a great song in its own right, maybe not as striking as some off the other songs in my Top 20 but the Indian vibe is certainly what sold it for me. Built By Titan's more recent stuff has been more on the indie side, Into The Mist being much more of a fave than its peak shows, and I'm expecting another of his to appear in my Top 100 this week!

 10 [12] The Fratellis - Starcrossed Losers

Their chart history hasn't evolved since Christmas but this piece is still one of the best of the year. A band I'd pretty much forgotten about until last year, this sounded nothing like their older stuff but was great in its own way, and whilst it did wear off on me a little at the time I still really appreciate the beauty of this track, and I'd love to hear another one like it. (but not identical, or I'd be bored of it). Still a really great track.

 09 [03] Snow Patrol - Don't Give In

And the second year in a row where the #3 falls to #9! This song isn't bad at all - it's more down to the fact that the other songs have grown on me so much. I do think that the simplistic value of the song which made me fall in love with it so much has worn off on me a little. Their most recent song just missed the Top 100 this week and might make it in the coming weeks but it's got nothing on this.

 08 [06] Mahmut Orhan & Colonel Bagshot - 6 Days

This song took up so much of my summer last year, I do think it must just have worn off on me a little. Some of the songs which were below it just sound so amazing still though, I don't really think I should be criticising this song considering how much of a tune it is and certainly the best dance song from last year (unless you count Rudimental), and considering how dramatic some of the changes have been this year a two-place drop is nothing. His follow-up was fairly underwhelming however, and I do hope he comes out with something better soon!

 07 [11] Vance Joy - We're Going Home

Right from the start I knew this was going to climb as it was only its point total which prevented it from being Top 5 last year - it really felt like a contender for #1. As a result of this, I do think the climb is a little short of what I thought it might be, and that's probably once again down to the fact that I was singing it in my head for so much of last year. In fact, I'm actually craving I'm With You more than I'm craving this right now. But it's still a stellar song, and one which put Vance Joy up there as an artist I expected to release great songs.

Commentary

And so the human robot is down a place, giving us two new songs in the Top 5! This remains an amazing track, the chorus and rap in the middle still sounding as amazing as ever - it's just the fact that Wallows and Suzi Island have been such amazing songs that this has had to fall down a place. Please give this a listen if you haven't - it's a great find! I need HUMAN to come back soon :(
