Are there any songs that were charting higher than Steps' singles that you actually prefer? Let's take a trip down memory lane...

Note: I'm only doing this for songs that went Top 20... sorry to Get It On - #23, Light Up the World - #82 and Scared of the Dark - #37!

Click the dates for more sales information for singles that placed lower than Steps.

4th January 1998
#01 03 Various Artists - Perfect Day [7 weeks] (83,000)
#02 04 All Saints - Never Ever [8 weeks] (80,000)
#03 01 Spice Girls - Too Much [3 weeks] (78,000)
#04 05 Janet Jackson - Together Again [5 weeks] (63,000)
#05 NE Lighthouse Family - High (58,000)
#06 NE Space - Avenging Angels (50,000)
#07 06 Robbie Williams - Angels [5 weeks] (48,000)
#08 02 Teletubbies - Teletubbies Say Eh-Oh! [5 weeks] (43,000)
#09 08 Natalie Imbruglia - Torn [10 weeks] (41,000)
#10 07 Aqua - Barbie Girl [12 weeks] (39,000)
#11 09 Boyzone - Baby Can I Hold You/Shooting Star [6 weeks]
#12 NE Allure - All Cried Out
#13 10 Elton John - Something About the Way You Look Tonight/Candle in the Wind [17 weeks]
#14 20 Steps - 5,6,7,8 [8 weeks]

Music Week: "Steps' 5-6-7-8, a favourite on the line-dancing scene, climbs to number 14 on its eighth week in the chart - its highest position. It has meandered 18-22-23-17-20-20-20-14, selling over 170,000 copies so far with almost no support from either radio or television. It has, for example, still to feature on Top of the Pops. As far as radio is concerned it snared just 39 plays last week - 15 of them from Orchard FM and 11 of them from Central FM - and occupied 380th place in the airplay chart. Based loosely on Brook's and Dunn's 1991 American hit Boot Scootin' Boogie, its tenacity in the face of minimum media support surely deserves better."

26th April 1998
#01 NE Boyzone - All That I Need (80,049)
#02 01 Run DMC vs Jason Nevins - It's Like That [7 weeks] (61,000)
#03 NE Kula Shaker - Sound of Drums (57,000)
#04 The Tamperer feat. Maya - Feel It [2 weeks] (54,000)
#05 NE Catatonia - Road Rage (44,000)
#06 NE Steps - Last Thing on My Mind (39,000)

Music Week: "Another act consolidating its 1998 breakthrough are Steps, who sold 300,000 copies of their debut hit 5-6-7-8, even though it climbed no higher than number 14. Their second hit, Last Thing on My Mind, is off to an impressive start, debuting at number six. It is an Abba-esque reading of an old Stock/Waterman/Dallin/Fahey song, which peaked a lowly 71 for Bananarama in 1992."

24th May 1998
#01 02 The Tamperer feat. Maya - Feel It [6 weeks] (49,500)
#02 01 All Saints - Under the Bridge/Lady Marmalade [4 weeks] (46,000)
#03 05 Lutricia McNeal - Stranded [2 weeks] (38,000)
#04 08 Mavericks - Dance the Night Away [5 weeks] (35,000)
#05 03 Wyclef Jean - Gone Till November [3 weeks] (34,000)
#06 07 Steps - Last Thing on My Mind [5 weeks] (31,000)

30th August 1998
#01 NE Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next (146,000)
#02 NE Steps - One for Sorrow (140,000)

Music Week: "Running [Manic Street Preachers] closest, Steps confirmed their status as one of the hottest new acts of 1998 by selling 140,000 copies of One for Sorrow, which debuted at number two. It's the third hit from their upcoming debut album Step One, following the number 14 hit 5-6-7-8 and number six Last Thing on My Mind. It was produced by Topham, Twigg and Waterman - Pete, that is, whose last top three hit in this role was Kylie Minogue's Better the Devil You Know back in 1990."

14th March 1999
#01 01 Boyzone - When the Going Gets Tough [2 weeks] (198,000)
#02 NE Steps - Better Best Forgotten (139,500)

Music Week: "Narrowing winning the sales war with Boyzone in the early part of the week, Steps were unable to match the extra sales their rivals generated from Comic Relief coverage, and had to be content in the end with a number two debut for their single Better Best Forgotten. The fifth single from Steps' debut album Step One, it nevertheless sold 139,000 copies - higher than their last hit Heartbeat/Tragedy managed on a single week, even though it topped the chart, and even though its sales to date are more than 1,063,000. Steps did have reason to celebrate last week, however - on Saturday they sold their millionth copy of Step One, exactly six months after its release. The previous hits from Step One are 5-6-7-8 (number 14), Last Thing on My Mind (number 6) and One for Sorrow (number 2). Heartbeat is on the album, but Tragedy is not."

4th April 1999
#01 01 Mr. Oizo - Flat Beat [2 weeks] (184,000)
#02 NE Eminem - My Name Is (143,000)
#03 NE Phats & Small - Turn Around (116,000)
#04 NE Various Artists - Thank ABBA for the Music (99,000)

Music Week: "With excellent first week tallies from Eminem, Phats & Small and the multi-artist Abba medley, the singles market is at its most buoyant since Christmas, with sales up 14% on last week."

18th April 1999
#01 01 Martine McCutcheon - Perfect Moment [2 weeks] (140,000)
#02 04 Phats & Small - Turn Around [3 weeks] (59,000)
#03 03 Eminem - My Name Is [3 weeks] (52,000)
#04 05 Various Artists - Thank ABBA for the Music [3 weeks] (50,000)

18th July 1999
#01 01 Ricky Martin - Livin' La Vida Loca [2 weeks] (125,000)
#02 NE Steps - Love's Got a Hold on My Heart (102,000)

Music Week: "A series of best selling singles culminated in Steps' first number one via the double A-sided Heartbeat/Tragedy in January. Each of the single since was expected to follow suit, and each managed number one for a couple of days in the midweek chart, but neither managed to hold on. After the number two success of Better Best Forgotten in March, they fall one place short of pole position again this week, with Love's Got a Hold on My Heart. The latter sold 102,000 copies last week, well down on the initial tally of nearly 140,000 registered by Better Best Forgotten, and some distance behind the 125,000 sales which keep Ricky Martin's Livin' La Vida Loca on top. But all may not be lost - the last single to reach number one after debuting lower was Heartbeat/Tragedy."

17th October 1999
#01 01 Christina Aguilera - Genie in a Bottle [2 weeks] (123,000)
#02 02 Ann Lee - 2 Times [2 weeks] (110,000)
#03 NE ATB - Don't Stop (91,000)
#04 03 Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Dee) [5 weeks] (74,000)
#05 NE Steps - After the Love Has Gone (59,000)

Music Week: "Meanwhile, having reached the top two with each of their last four singles - including number one Heartbeat/Tragedy - Steps' popularity has cooled slightly but perceptibly, with After the Love Has Gone settling for a number five debut with sales just short of 60,000."

#01 01 Westlife - I Have a Dream/Seasons in the Sun [4 weeks] (34,738)
#02 03 Artful Dodger feat. Craig David - Re-Rewind The Crowd Say Bo Selecta [6 weeks] (29,000)

#04 04 Steps - Say You'll Be Mine/Better the Devil You Know [4 weeks] (24,000)

9th April 2000
#01 NE Craig David - Fill Me In (165,000)
#02 NE Sweet Female Attitude - Flowers (80,000)
#03 NE Richard Ashford - A Song for the Lovers (70,000)
#04 NE Steps - Deeper Shade of Blue (67,000)

9th July 2000
#01 NE The Corrs - Breathless (80,869)
#02 01 Eminem - The Real Slim Shady [2 weeks] (71,000)
#03 NE Limp Bizkit - Take a Look Around (56,000)
#04 NE Oasis - Sunday Morning Call (53,000)
#05 NE Steps - When I Said Goodbye/Summer of Love (52,500)

Music Week: "Steps have taken five hits from their latest album Steptacular, although neither Summer of Love off their current single nor Better the Devil You Know, which was a double A-side with Say You'll Be Mine, appear on the album. When I Said Goodbye/Summer of Love is Steps' 10th hit in all, with only the introductory single 5-6-7-8 falling short of the top ten, and seven of the records reaching the top five. Steptacular improves 27-22 this week."

7th January 2001
#01 NE Rui Da Silva feat. Cassandra - Touch Me (68,471)
#02 72 Steps - It's the Way You Make Me Feel [2 weeks] (52,000)

Music Week: "Runners-up Steps' It's the Way You Make Me Feel/Too Busy Thinking About My Baby sold less than 52,000. Both [Rui Da Silva, Steps] and third placed Fragma's Everytime You Need Me were the subject of distribution leakages which led to their making low debuts on the chart last week. Da Silva moves 112-1, Steps 72-2 and Fragma 129-3. The Da Silva and Fragma are still listed as new entries on our chart pages, as they are entering the published Top 75 chart for the first time, while Steps' single is shown as improving 72-2. It thus becomes the biggest climber in chart history, replacing Nick Berry's Every Loser Wins, which catapulted 66-4 in 1986.

Steps register their 11th consecutive Top 10 hit this week, as It's the Way You Make Me Feel/Too Busy Thinking About My Baby soars 72-2. The record is the group's 12th hit, with only their debut single 5-6-7-8 (number 14, 1997) falling short of the Top 10. Steps are one of only five acts in the last decade to have 10 or more Top 10 hits in a row, the others being George Michael, Take That, Oasis and 911. Too Busy Thinking About My Baby is a Marvin Gaye cover recorded for the recent Motown Mania TV show / compilation album, while It's the Way You Make Me Feel is lifted from Steps' latest album, Buzz, the long-player has sold more than 550,000 copies since its release last October, and has been climbing the chart for the last fortnight, moving 20-16-13, as airplay for It's the Way You Make Me Feel has increased."

10th June 2001
#01 01 Shaggy feat. Rayvon - Angel [2 weeks] (101,000)
#02 02 DJ Pied Piper - Do You Really Like It [3 weeks] (66,000)
#03 NE Faithless - We Come 1 (54,000)
#04 NE Steps - Here and Now/You'll Be Sorry (51,000)

Music Week: "Last Friday, the London Evening Standard's ES Magazine's 'so now, so then, so over' list nominated S Club 7 as now, Hear'Say as then and Steps as over in the mixed pop vocal group stakes. The latter judgement seems both harsh and premature given that the very same Steps debut at number four this week with Here and Now/You'll Be Sorry. It gives the act their 12th consecutive Top 10 hit, a sequence which extends all the way back to their second single and which, among British groups, is beaten only by the Beatles and The Rolling Stones - exalted for a group that is 'so over'. It is also Steps' 11th straight top five hit, a sequence only bettered by the Beatles. Here and Now/You'll Be Sorry is the group's fifth double-A side, and both tracks are taken from the group's latest album Buzz, which contains five hits and has sold 663,000 copies to date."

30th September 2001
#01 01 Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out of My Head [2 weeks] (180,699)
#02 NE Steps - Chain Reaction (108,000)

Music Week: "Although unable to dethrone Kylie Minogue, Steps enjoy their third biggest first-week sale of their 14-hit career with Chain Reaction/One for Sorrow. It sold more than 108,000 copies last week, a total the group have only beaten with their introductory week's sales of One for Sorrow (140,000) and Better Best Forgotten (139,500). Ironically, neither of their number ones (Heartbeat/Tragedy and Stomp) had particularly massive openings. Stomp debuted at one with sales of just 48,000 while Heartbeat/Tragedy opened with a tally of 66,500 in November 1998 but gathered impetus as Christmas approached and sold 105,000 copies in its peak week, its seventh in the charts. It finally topped the chart the following week with sales of 98,000. It is easily the group's biggest seller with 1.15m copies sold. Including this week's debut for Chain Reaction/One for Sorrow, the group's cumulative singles sales are 4.14m."

Note: Steps were only 1,500 copies ahead of #3 - DJ Otzi - Hey Baby.

9th December 2001
#01 01 Daniel Bedingfield - Gotta Get Thru This [2 weeks] (80,000)
#02 NE Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder on the Dancefloor (55,500)
#03 02 S Club 7 - Have You Ever [3 weeks] (48,000)
#04 NE Stereophonics - Handbags and Gladrags (45,000)
#05 NE Steps - Words Are Not Enough/I Know Him So Well (44,000)

Music Week: "Steps debut at number five with Words Are Not Enough/I Know Him So Well to register their 15th consecutive hit and their 14th successive Top 10 hit. It is also their 13th Top 5 hit in a row, a sequence bettered only by The Beatles."

12th May 2002
#01 NE Ronan Keating - If Tomorrow Never Comes (147,610)
#02 01 Holly Valance - Kiss Kiss [2 weeks] (75,000)
#03 NE H & Claire - DJ (43,000)
#04 02 S Club Juniors - One Step Closer [3 weeks] (38,000)
#05 NE Nigel & Marvin - Follow the Leader (36,000)
#06 03 Sugababes - Freak Like Me [3 weeks] (31,000)
#07 04 N Sync feat. Nelly - Girlfriend [4 weeks] (26,000)
#08 07 Nickelback - How You Remind Me [11 weeks] (18,000)
#09 05 Tweet - Oops (Oh My) [2 weeks] (17,000)
#10 NE Russell Watson & Faye Tozer - Someone Like You (14,000)

Music Week: "When Steps broke up, many believed it would spell the end of the chart careers of all concerned. That is emphatically not the case, as three of the five former members of the group make the list this week. Leading the way at number three, H & Claire's first single as a duo, DJ, extends to 15 their run of consecutive Top Five hits. Former colleague Faye Tozer's Someone Like You collaboration with Russell Watson cannot match that but still makes a creditable debut at number ten."

18th August 2002
#01 NE Sugababes - Round Round (79,030)
#02 01 Darius - Colourblind [3 weeks] (42,500)
#03 NE Romeo - Romeo Dunn (37,000)
#04 NE Daniel Bedingfield - James Dean (I Wanna Know) (35,000)
#05 03 Mad'House - Like a Prayer [2 weeks] (27,000)
#06 NE Hear'Say - Lovin' Is Easy (24,000)
#07 NE Lasgo - Alone (23,000)
#08 NE H & Claire - Half a Heart (19,000)

Music Week: "The former Steps pair, H & Claire, reached number three with their first duet, DJ, and although they have stretched their run of consecutive Top 10 hits with and without Steps to 17, Half a Heart is their lowest charting single since Steps' 1997 debut 5-6-7-8 peaked at number 14. Not much of a birthday present for Claire, who turned 25 on Saturday (17 August)."

10th November 2002
#01 NE Westlife - Unbreakable (90,000)
#02 01 DJ Sammy & Yanou feat. Do - Heaven [2 weeks] (66,500)

One for Sorrow was so close to #1! cry.gif I personally think Steps were robbed on that occasion and that they had the superior song, although I'm sure rock fans would disagree...

By the end of 1998, Manic Street Preachers' single didn't sell as much as Steps - One for Sorrow sold 393,000 copies, If You Tolerate This... sold 307,000. Tolerate passed 400,000 in June 2016, and OCC reported that One for Sorrow was on sales of 423,000 in March 2017.

Manic Street Preachers' song seems better remembered these days, if Spotify is anything to go by - it has over 43,000,000 worldwide streams versus just 6,000,000 for One for Sorrow. I'm going to assume that means that Manic's song has amassed a better sales total now.

I didn't realise that Better Best Forgotten had such a strong first week sale, which is really impressive considering that the album was on the verge of 1 million sales when the single was released.

Interesting to note that After the Love Has Gone had weaker first week sales than Say You'll Be Mine/Better the Devil You Know and Deeper Shade of Blue. I feel like this suggests that either of these singles could have performed a whole lot better as the second single. Steptacular had sold 890,000 copies by the end of 1999, and I'm guessing by the time Deeper Shade of Blue was released the album might have exceeded 1 million copies? And yet Deeper Shade of Blue managed 67,000 after all those album sales, compared to After the Love Has Gone selling 59,000 which was before the album's release!

It's worth noting that Say You'll Be Mine/Better the Devil You Know had a really strong first week sale - 83,000, which was only enough to enter at #7! It sold 67,000 a week later at #8. As you can see in my first post, its sales in its third and fourth week at #4 were considerably less, which was due to overall sales plummeting in the new year. With sales so close, it's a pity they didn't manage to sell a bit more and at least get a #3 peak (a position Steps have never achieved).

A bit frustrating to see that When I Said Goodbye/Summer of Love was only 3,500 copies behind #3. I'm sure if they'd released a CD2 they could have managed that!

I didn't realise/remember that It's the Way You Make Me Feel's first week sales were as low as 52k - but in those days January sales were generally always quite weak, so that goes some way to explain that. That was also higher first week sales than Stomp, which sold a fairly unremarkable 48k to reach #1 - less than their previous single needed to reach #5. Stomp being one of their #1s almost seems like a bit of a fluke, with it being a well timed release in a poor sales week.

I'm quite surprised/impressed to see that Here and Now/You'll Be Sorry sold 51k to be #4. I would not have guessed that it had stronger first week sales than Stomp and almost as much as It's the Way You Make Me Feel. This single seems to be a bit disregarded by many Steps fans, but it still did really well for them.

Chain Reaction gave Steps their first single to exceed 100k in the first week since Love's Got a Hold on My Heart. They were unfortunate to coincide with Kylie's single being such a huge smash, but wow at them also only being 1,500 copies ahead of #3! Some of the #1 sales in the weeks before and after Chain Reaction's release were weaker, so that's a shame.

25-Aug Let's Dance Five 84,782
01-Sep Let's Dance Five 52,000
08-Sep Too Close Blue 83,886
15-Sep Mambo No 5 Bob The Builder 102,056
22-Sep Hey Baby DJ Otzi 90,748
29-Sep Can't Get You Out Of My Head Kylie Minogue 306,648
06-Oct Can't Get You Out Of My Head Kylie Minogue 180,699 - the week Steps entered at #2
13-Oct Can't Get You Out Of My Head Kylie Minogue 122,000
20-Oct Can't Get You Out Of My Head Kylie Minogue 95,500

Aww at Electric only being 1,407 copies away from Top 10 (although with sales being so low across the board, that was quite a significant gap... it sold 85% of the number of copies it needed to sell in order to reach #10). Sometimes I wonder whether there may have been some sabotage at play from MTV/the label/management in terms of this single's distribution / number of copies pressed. I get the impression that there may have been some people involved in that debacle that probably wanted Electric/Lisa to fail, so that another awkward moment could be created for the series. Bless her for promoting so hard and having all that publicity, only to sell a little over 8k.

I do love old Steps but that second album was nowhere near as good as the first or third unfortunately. In also extremely surprised they hadn't had more #1's tbh. And it is ironic as stated that they had a couple #1's with low sales numbers and kissed the #1's with the higher ones.

I can remember the chart week ‘It’s The Way You Make Me Feel’ went from 72-2 and seeing in the music section of the paper. It mentioned them that a few shops put it on sale a week early but it looks like it’d wouldn’t have been enough to clinch the #1 if it hadn’t have happened.

I love both songs tbh. One For Sorrow is one of my favourite Steps songs and If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next is one of the few songs from the Manics that I can tolerate in all honesty.

Huge sales for both One For Sorrow and Better Best Forgotten. The former definitely should have been No.1 although I’d say in the ‘classic’ stakes it’s still probably level pegging with that Manics song, it’s interesting that they ended up so close to each other on week one.

After The Love Has Gone just didn’t really seem to connect at all did it, they still often miss it out on tours which is a shame as it’s a nice song (albeit maybe came across as a One For Sorrow self parody to some). It also appeared on Now’s Forgotten 90s compilation, which was apt laugh.gif Yes Deeper Shade Of Blue would have probably made a killer second single although still probably would have topped out at No.4 - I’d forgotten just how much ATB’s Don’t Stop sold ohmy.gif

I have to admit, I never listen to 'After The Love Has Gone' and it's the single I always forget exists. It's never done anything for me.

One for sorrow stands out the most for coming so close, but thanks for these posts, your sales information was a great read so thank you for sharing with us.

Fantastic research here, Jay!

I too can't quite believe how close One For Sorrow was, but I guess the Manics' track does have a long legacy, especially where I'm from anyway! laugh.gif

The sales for After The Love Has Gone were absolutely shocking, especially given the $ that was spent on the video. Perhaps that's why it didn't connect with a general audience - it was all a bit too blockbuster for Steps! Still, I would have thought a non-album track (at the time) would have performed a lot better, but it seems even the fans didn't respond massively to it either! Nothing went wrong with it's distribution that anyone knows about did it?

As far as whether I prefer any songs that charted above Steps, absolutely none of them apart from Murder On The Dancefloor. Kylie comes close with Chain Reaction, but Steps just about pips it for me. When it comes to the post-Steps singles...

- Kiss Kiss, One Step Closer, Freak Like Me and How You Remind Me beat Someone Like You, but DJ is supreme to them all.
- Alone, Round Round, Like A Prayer and James Dean all beat Half a Heart
- No Good Advice, Favourite Things and Loneliness are on an equal level to Lately

It's painful to see so many awful songs higher than Steps, especially "Feel It", "We Come 1", "Touch Me", "Don't Stop" and "Livin' La Vida Loca". sad.gif

Just imagine if 'Tragedy' hadn't got that fluke week at #1 late in its chart run and they picked the wrong week for 'Stomp', they'd have no number ones to their name and probably setting a record for the most #2s without a #1 by any act!

To be fair I prefer a few of these songs to the respective Steps songs they beat:

At least half of the Jan 1998 songs to 5,6,7,8 laugh.gif

I prefer that entire top four in October 1999 to After The Love Has Gone - for me that's one of the best UK top fives we ever had!

Breathless I prefer to both When I Said Goodbye and Summer Of Love.

And Murder On The Dancefloor and Have You Ever, probably also Gotta Get Thru This, I prefer to Words Are Not Enough/I Know Him So Well.

I def preferred breathless and realky was happy the corrs got a much deserved number 1 single. Tragedy was a well well number 1 for Steps and in ways it almost never happened but thankfully it did.
