At 20. We have England's victory against Sweden at the group stages. It was the first time that England beat Sweden in a competitive fixture. For England they would go on and reach the quarter-finals and lose to Italy on penalties sound familiar?

At 19, it is possibly the greatest Euro upset where it was an Greek tragedy for Portugal at their home tournament where they lost again to Greece this time in the Euro 2004 final in the first match of Euro 2004, Greece would beat Portugal 2-1. Greece were 150/1 at the beginning of the tournament to win the Euros. I know this may not be the best match in this countdown but I remember it well for it being one of the great football shocks.

At #16, it is one of England's worst performances that I have seen, why I have got it in this countdown is because it is particularly memorable for me as my Dad was probably in the only one in my county who went for Iceland to win and for both teams to score at 25/1. I can remember him willing England not to score.

It does make you remember how good a job Southgate has done since picking up that absolute shambles of a team in 2016 to only lose on penalties in the final of the very next Euros.

That was the game that all but ended Joe Hart's career.

Yeh that’s what I always try and remind you guys of when yous complain about Southgate, he’s been brilliant considering where yous were under Roy!

Love looking at the old team sheets of these matches!

At #15, it is this group stage between Portugal and England this saw England throw away a two-goal lead and Portugal came back during the first half to level, England had been 2-0 up after 18 minutes, Portugal would score the winner in the 59th minute thanks to Nuno Gomes. For England, they would be knocked out in the group stages thanks to a 89th minute penalty conceded by Phil Neville against Romania where they would lose 3-2. As for Portugal, they would reach the semi-finals where they would lose to France, which you may see in this countdown later on.

At #14, it is this Euro 2000 group stage between debutants Slovenia and Yugoslavia. For Slovenia it was a dream start after 57 minutes they went 3-0 up, after an hour Yugoslavia were down to 10 men and 3-0 down, however they completed quite an remarkable comeback by scoring three goals in 13 minutes to level this game. As you will see later on, it wouldn't be the first time in Euro 2000 that Yugoslavia would appear in an thrilling group stage match. For Slovenia they would exit at the group stages after losing 2-1 to Spain and drawing against Norway 0-0.

At #13, it is probably the greatest night in Welsh football history with Wales beating one of the tournament favourites Belgium and their 'Golden Generation'. For Wales they would lose in the semi-finals to tournament winners Portugal 2-0.

What about retro matches ?

That's an idea whenever I have done these best matches at a major football tournament, I have normally have covered the tournaments that I have watched since I was alive. If you would like to see do something similar with retro matches in the near future, I'll be happy to do so, :)

At #9, it is this group stage match from Euro 96 between the oldest international fixture between Scotland and England. When I was 2, I went to Mallorca with my parents during when Euro 96, I was told that my Dad wanted to go and see Spain vs England at the pub but he didn't go as there was a massive fight at the end of the match. This game is particularly memorable for Gascoigne's goal and his famous 'dentist chair' celebration. And also for Scotland's penalty miss where Uri Geller claimed he moved the ball before Gary McAllister took the penalty. It was a year where a particular song called 'Three Lions' came out and would go on and become a England football anthem where will probably re-enter the charts every major tournament that England are in. For England it didn't 'come home' in the end where they lost to Germany on penalties, the current England manager missed his penalty.
