Recalling the moment she learned that he had died, Madonna said, “All I could think about in that moment was I had abandoned him. That we had abandoned him. That we had let this magnificent creature who had once set the world on fire slip through the cracks. Most of us had turned our backs on him. … There will never be anyone like him again. He was a king.” Though she didn’t dance tonight, Madonna has always been at home in the VMAs’ spotlight. She set the bar high at the show’s inaugural event in 1984, writhing around in a sexified wedding gown to “Like a Virgin” in a performance that had the crowd literally gasping in shock, her longtime publicist Liz Rosenberg recalled to Rolling Stone. “Madonna took it so much further than anyone knew she was capable of,” Rosenberg said. “Some people thought she was the greatest thing ever, and other people thought she was disgusting.” Edited September 14, 200915 yr by Shaun
September 14, 200915 yr She looks like her in 95! But her speech was amazingly beautiful. And she is right. We did let Michael Jackson slip through the cracks. You really don't know what you've got till it's gone http://www.mtv.com/content/ontv/vma/2007/photo/flipbooks/madonna/vma-madonna-1995.jpg Edited September 14, 200915 yr by Spiral
September 16, 200915 yr If only she looked like that more often these days, as opposed to grinding against walls in leotards and hotpants, I think she'd still have a LOT more respect from the media.

I totally agree! there's no need for all that stuff, it does her no favours at all (Hard Candy cover in particular - AWFUL) Just wear normal clothes Madge!
September 16, 200915 yr Madonna is never going to be a play it safe fashion icon. The reason many people became her fan in the beginning is because she stood out. Why should she conform now that she's in her 50's? If you want a zero personality star who wears whats "hip" then there is plenty to chose from on the charts.
September 16, 200915 yr If only she looked like that more often these days, as opposed to grinding against walls in leotards and hotpants, I think she'd still have a LOT more respect from the media. Well said She looked absolutely stunning at the VMA's, like the legend she is. She can still push fashion boundaries and stand out but in a much more dignified way. At 51 years of age and after 27 years in the business she doesn't have to be vulgar or crass to impress people; dressing smart and stylish like she did on sunday night would give her so much more respect from everyone.
