The Outfield "Your love" - #6 in the USA, a worldwide hit and a 80's classic...but only made it to #83 in the UK

Probably because the Americans hadn't yet got over the break-up of the Police!

That summer, 1986, was chock-full of songs that were heard a lot on the radio, but didn't become big hits. Two examples, 'Right Between The Eyes' by Wax and Bangles 'Going Down To Liverpool', numbers 60 and 56 respectively, but never off the radio that summer.

was (like 'hazy shade of winter') 'goin down to liverpool' a cover?... sounds like it should be

Kate Bush - This Woman's Work (missed the top 20, a minor hit in 1989)

The Smiths - That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore (missed the top 40)

ABBA - The Day Before You Came (minor top 40 hit in 1982)

Yes, but you'll never guess of who

I know who it was! And I'm pretty sure it was the b-side to one of their big hits.
Yep! And Going Down to Liverpool was the b-side of Walking on Sunshine (I think!!!).

It was a re-recording, Katrina & The Waves having originally recorded the song in 1983 then re-recorded it for their 1985 album. The Bangles version apparently originates from 1984.
